Well, it's shame but I understand they might not have enough resource to configure for more resolutions support, I assume they are very very small devs team. Good luck them, I might buy one but I believe I have played it before.

When a fellow GAF member can add that resolutions support in 23 minutes, I think that saying they are a "very very small devs team" is a laughably bad excuse. Unless Durante is terribly huge or super rich, I don't really know...

Just saw this linked to from the GOG thread, guess they'll have to update it when they get hammered with complaints:

From the game card:

"Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut on PC includes the following features over and above the original game:
• A surprising new scenario from the game’s director, Hidetaka ‘Swery’ Suehiro
• Enhanced HD graphics with new textures
• Reworked control system allowing for an even better combat experience

Plus, it also includes all 12 pieces of add-on content previously released as DLC for the PS3 version, along with new content not available on any other format!"

To say it includes enhanced HD graphics over and above the original game sounds like a bit of a stretch if it's limited to 720p.

What was the game rendered at on consoles?

Technically they aren't lying even if it is rendered at 720p

That sounds like the same feature list from the PS3 version - in other words, those are the Director's Cut improvements compared to the original NA release on the 360.

What I find interesting is that they added Steam achievements and trading cards for the game, so it's not like no one had a look at the code or did PC-specific stuff at all. So it's surprising they didn't also add a resolution option.

Maybe it really is more challenging in this case than changing a few buffer sizes.

This is a game that ran like shit on consoles despite starting development as a PS2 game and had none of the technical problems fixed in the Director's Cut re-release. The game should at least have a steady framerate on PC, at least. Anyone expecting them to step it up for the PC release was bound to be disappointed. :lol

I fail to see if this is sarcasm (due to the thread about PC gaming not being taken seriously) or an example of rock-bottom standards and expectations. I hope it's the former.

You are right, it is a console game.

Plug in, play, enjoy 720p. No extra input from you required.

Adding an option for >720p in a 3D game is almost always trivial. I have games from ~15 years ago that allow this.

I guess the programmers could have been incompetent enough to code the game in a manner that makes it impossible but I can't even remember the last time I saw that.

Isn't that crazy that some devs had the foresight to include scale options? You usually have to do workarounds for aspect ratios though.

But that shouldn't be confused with a "bad" version of the game. Bad versions are games that crash, are buggy, unstable, poorly optimized, etc. Dark Souls PC was extremely solid in those regards. It didn't require a beast of a system to run well and it was generally very stable. It just needed a little love in the options area.

I consider running at my monitor's native resolution to be part of the required conditions for qualifying as an acceptable port. Of course, stability is also a huge part of it, but not the only one.

So in my opinion, vanilla Dark Souls and Deadly Premonition are bad PC ports.

Of course, Durante released the fix for Dark Souls essentially as the game unlocked in the States.
I booted it up once, then immediately quit, and installed DSfix.

Yep, it was scary how fast that fix came. I mean most of us expected a fix for it when it came out but like a half hour after? shit was fast

Do we have confirmation, that this is true? So far there's only a comment in the steam forum claiming that people who have the Gamersgate version told that but I can't find any source for that. And in the meantime the gamersgate version was removed from the store.
Well, less than half an hour until the game is released. I hope the port isn't too bad :/

We know. Main stream journalism distorted the truth. It did come out within 30 minutes of the Dark Souls release, but people on GAF know what happened.

That was the culmination of weeks of work.

Amazing discovery #1:

This game does not use DirectInput. It uses the positively ancient joyGetPosEx function in the WinMM library.

What this means for a potential DPfix:

I'll have to change the loading/interception method. That's +30 minutes.

Well, this game was an abject failure in nearly anything technical. It makes sense that this trait would continue to shine through in the PC version. They really, really need to rehire their entire programming team. There are plenty of capable people to go around. (And yes, Durante should receive a freaking medal for essentially saving FROM Software's collective behinds. As a side note, I also swear that if the big, stupid and obtrusive UI isn't adjustable in Dark Souls 2, I'm gonna lose it. Sadly, Durante said he wouldn't work on bugs relating to that anymore.)

Sure, the Japanese education system still doesn't exactly reward creative and critical thinking--instead focussing on a lot of rote memorisation and doing well on exams--and the general work ethic in businesses is horrendously skewed towards putting in hours but not actually doing good work, but you also have to realise that PCs are simply not a big deal over there.

Anyway, doing the ports in-house instead of outsourcing them to actually capable people must save a lot of money. Still, I wouldn't say it's a complete cash-grab (otherwise, why bother doing all the enhancements?). It's not even the most minimalistic effort they could get away with, really. It's just... puzzling. I reckon that a few people along the way simply could not get the job done right and, to save face, it got quietly swept under the rug.
