Lock if old. As a fan of Brooker's work, I'm looking forward to this.

UPDATE: We now have a date and time. Channel 4. Sat 30th Nov from 9pm.

Writer and comic (and former games journalist) Charlie Brooker is to host a new TV show about video games.

It’s called How Video Games Changed The World and will be aired on Channel 4 at the end of November as part of a themed night dedicated to video games.

Endemol’s one-off documentary will last two hours and chart the history of gaming and its impact on society. It will feature the likes of famed developers Nolan Bushnell and Will Wright, writer Rhianna Pratchett as well as celebrity gamers Jonathan Ross, Dara O’Briain and Labrinth.

“How Video Games Changed the World provides an intelligent, funny and entertaining look at some of the most influential and iconic video games in history (even the absolutely dreadful ones),” the blurb reads.

“We will be reminiscing back to the launch of Pac-Man and the birth of the first electronic icon for 80’s popular culture. Moving through to the booming nineties we will be looking at video games’ first credible female character, digital cover girl and tawdry teenage boy fantasy – Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft.

“Now in the 21st century we take a critical look at how Minecraft and its fan base of armchair architects are reshaping the world one brick at a time, whilst shoot-fest franchises like Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto are easily outselling other forms of entertainment on a day to day basis.”

If it's part of a whole C4 night dedicated to videogames, does that mean we could see the return of GamesMaster (please?)

Even tho he's really, really bad at Gears (can't get past the first level - had a whole segment about it on Gameswipe IIRC)

Also video games changed the world???

I love being a gamer, but come on what a pile of bull.

It is just a form of entertainment. For most gamers(i would say the mobile /facebook gamers) it is just a way to pass boredom.

Games are great and all, and I love MGS series and it always makes me thing. But games don't drastically change peoples lives.

I am sure the show will just end up saying how some doctors use games to practice surgery and piloits use simulators when they practice too.

Matt Lees (GAF's own jam_sponge, and the man behind the PS4 Abridged videos) is the show's main writer.

Ergo, this is probably going to be wonderfully daft.

I think it's to go with the line of documentary's channel 4 does with the title How "insert topic" changed the world. they did it with Dance music last year.

I could see that coming back as a one off nostalgia special, but without Sir Patrick Moore as the GamesMaster, it just won't be the same.

You should definitely watch this then. It's a games episode that Brooker has already done. It's hysterical as well as insightful and takes a good stance.

I remember that one. Was actually pretty good. They had the documentary and then they had DJs playing a set all through the small hours.

Was fun.

But yeah I love Charlie Brooker and I'm sure ever since he did that Gameswipe one off half of his mail is about Gameswipe. The other half is from people that are mad jelly he's married to Konnie Huq

He has sold out a bit since his Superkaylo and wipe days (remember that awful quiz show) - not that I blame the guy, gotta get paid.

I still trust him to make a serious show about games though. One of the few that I would.

You Have Been Watching?

That had a few good moments. Like the bit where they make fun of Deadliest Warrior and the One Show. Actually both of those were in the first episode.

So I guess it peaked early.

Or like other forms of entertainment. Are you saying films, tvs, books, music, etc, don't change people's lives?

These things inspire people's beliefs, attitudes, way of living, and as a by product of that, as we affect the world we live in, games have changed the world. For something to /change the world/ it doesn't have to be something important to progress of civilisation or even good.
