NCL suspends image sharing in Swap Note and Flipnote [Spot pass Notes disabled]

Just found out about this when checking notifications. Pretty crazy, and it makes the application feel a little gross now, since most users will only be receiving marketing blasts from Nintendo.

Nope. They suspended those too. The program is almost completely useless now.

Its only use now is to sit on my main menu and remind me of a once great program killed for no reason.

You mean the same parents that buy their kids iphones/ipads and let them have facebook accounts etc. when they are that young?

Nintendo wouldn't be vulnerable to anything legal if they just posted some disclaimer when you sign into it or something. Plus why is it that no other company that allows this same sort of feature has ever pulled the service down because of this? Microsoft wasn't shutting UNO down when kids where showing their dicks on camera, they just banned the accounts.

I think an important distinction is that iPhones and iPads are considered necessities today whose rewards far outweigh the risks. Dedicated handhelds don't have that luxury. Unfortunately I don't think Nintendo can ban individual users from swapnote due to their shortsightedness in not using an account system. Perhaps that will be fixed if they ever get accounts on 3DS. Fortunately Wii U does have accounts that can be banned.

It's surprising Nintendo even allowed pics to be transmitted over the service considering how unmoderated it is. It was inevitable it would be misused.

Nintendo can't do that without an actual account system. The best they can do is ban you from MiiVerse.

Probably will be put back online like Miiverse with something like "all posts are checked first", like Miiverse got or something weird.

The optimistic part in me thinks it's because Miiverse is coming. In some way, a moderated version of Swapnote. Rumors were about miiverse coming in fall, after Pokemon release... We will see...

The future will be that parental controls will be enabled out of the box and you'll have to use a credit card or something to deactivate them.

This reminds me I'll repost this here (sorry if it was already in the thread):
Well, it went like this:

pg1. "Thank you very much for playing the game!" [audio: Hello, I'm James, Director of HarmoKnight. Thank you very much for playing the game.]

pg2. "Did you enjoy creating your own music by hitting flowers?" [drawing of a flower]

pg3. "I hope you liked the unlocked stages, too!"

pg4. [drawing of Tempo doing a V-sign with Turner's signature in the corner]
Its not just Nintendo and your friends who used Swapnote...but developers could send messages to players of their game.

Imagine getting Ken whathisface drawing Pokemon...all gone now. Which reminds me, I did a trade with a random on Pokemon on Saturday and after I finished there was no option to add them to friends.

It definitely wouldn't fix such problem, but it probably wouldn't result in this scorched earth solution.
Why? I had this argument with you on Twitter already :p

I get that non-system-locked account systems are a thing that is wanted, but it does not affect Nintendo's inability to deal with the problem in a more precise manner. Be there user-visible accounts or not, blocking is 100% technologically possible. There is just no implementation of blocking in Swapnote at this time.

The only thing that makes sense is that Pokemon XY caused a surge in kids sharing friend codes online and one or more of them got some bad swap notes as a result. Spot pass would have to be suspended until they could work out a solution, most likely moderation. It was amazing Nintendo was allowing such a largely unmoderated message sharing app in 2013 where their competitor's apps are censored to hell.
This is pretty much it. I'm not a Pokémon player and as such have only read about the Friend Safari, but it's pretty clear to me that resourceful kids who are not dumb took a look at the prizes they could win by just adding anyone's FC they could get their hands on and did so.

And, just, to keep flagellating the deceased equine, this exact same thing would have happened if it was accounts instead of system FCs.

While that sounds nice and all, I'm not sure if that's actually the case, because if Nintendo actuall yad the power to do something like that, then why would they resort to complete shutdown? Just seems either lazy or incompetent. The question is whether they'll revisit it and implement a blocking feature to bring swapnote back.

^ This is the key, I think. There is no such feature—reports can only come in via customer service channels, which doesn't scale at all—so to stop the issue, the service gets shut down. If I were them I would probably be working on a new Swapnote that has easy blocking/reporting (like many online/StreetPass games do, at least for the former) and/or a removal of the photo function to at least cut out the what they consider the most egregious offenders.

But yes, I'm making the point here that account systems change nothing.

Has anyone stopped and realized that they might disable the message you can send people via Street Pass? Currently right now it's the only way to send messages to people without being on their friend list.

Big difference between sending pics and a one off message of about 15 characters.

Doubtful, if only because it never actually functions.

Hiccup wasn't talking about the friend list message.

Each system is still unique and could be banned. Wouldn't stop a person from spending further hundreds of dollars on new machines to bother people with, but that's only going to be the most dedicated dickheads.

Yup. Can't understand why this is so hard to fathom…

So... where's Miiverse?

I'd of expected them to discontinue Swapnote when Miiverse was prepped.

Nope. Good ol' Nintendo cops.

According to Yomiuri Online, two men have been arrested for performing "improper acts" in hotel rooms with the same 12 year-old girl on multiple occasions earlier this year. The girl met both men, aged 49 and 36, through her 3DS. Yomiuri Online doesn't specifically mention SwapNote. A Mainichi News report, however, does.

Mainichi reports that charges for child pornography have also been filed against another man, 44, who had allegedly two girls - then aged 11 to 12 - send nude photos through SwapNote, or "Itsu no Ma ni Koukan Nikki" (いつの間に交換日記) as it's called in Japan. The man has confessed to doing so. [/QUOTE

Just gotta bump this dinosaur thread to say as a new 3DS owner, this entirely bummed me out! I liked drawing with my wife on our DS' and was looking forward to a similar feature... They still haven't adjusted it to just exclude pictures yet? Ridiculous. I'm surprised there was less of an outcry.

You can still send to friends by streetpass.

It is perfectly usable with you and your wife
