PlayStation Protection Plan - Official extended warranties

How long is the manufacturer’s warranty again?

Edit: Nvm found it

All PlayStation® hardware comes with a 1-year limited warranty. The PlayStation® Protection Plan is an extended service for consumers who want the added peace of mind that comes from having 24 months of additional coverage after your manufacturer’s warranty expires. Plans Include:

Dedicated PlayStation® Support specialists & 800 number
Claim processing available 7 days a week
No out-of-pocket expenses for qualified claims
Pre-paid shipping box
PlayStation® certified technicians & genuine PlayStation® parts

Does anyone remember the UK thing at the beginning of the PS3's life cycle where you would pay for accidental cover and then straight away claim for a new PS3 and cancel the plan.

Free brand new PS3 for like £30 if I remember. The fraud discussions kept coming and eventually they stopped it.

It's really interesting to see a hardware manufacturer offering this, I don't think I've ever seen it before.

I still can't imagine it's any better a deal than getting it from Best Buy etc. They make tons of money off these extended warranties and probably 99% of the people who buy them never end up needing them or using them. That said, it would have come in handy with the Xbox 360...

How long do you have to buy the warranty after you get your PS4? Until the 1 Year limited warranty is up?

Is the warranty a 1 time exchange? So if it breaks after 18 months, is that it or does my replacement continue to carry the remaining time of the warranty?

Really considering this. I mean it looks like both systems are well built and 1 year is a long time but 3 years for 40 bucks is not bad. Problem is the time it takes to send it in and get a new one is usually not good.

Nice! Hopefully they allow you to buy it at anytime. I can't see myself spending anymore as it is, but if I can add this after the holidays then sweet!

Any reason why this still doesn't extend to the UK? This has been a thing in the US since 2010 if I'm not mistaken and yet there's no sign it will extend to the UK. I know we have pretty favourable consumer laws which make returning a console to the store of purchase relatively easy, but this does seem preferable...

Not sure

Terms for US section says the following

For the [PRODUCT PROTECTION PLUS]: If We replace the Product with another of equal value or like kind and quality, We shall have satisfied all obligations owed under this Service Plan.

Not sure if that should be interpreted as one and done or not

Because European law is supposed to forbid 1 year warranties for such products. So, it's 2 years by default in Europe, even if Sony pretend otherwise.

Who is eligible to purchase these new service plans?

The PlayStation® Protection Plans are available for purchase by customers who are still within their original one-year limited warranty. Accidental Damage Plans are available to anyone who has purchased a system in the past 30 days.

Lop 10$ off from just buying PS+ and 10$ from the in box PSN card for PS4 and I'm looking at 29$ for 2 years warranty.

Done.

Actually cool since you get $10 credit with the PS4 & an additional $10 if you brought $50 worth of psn items in October. I brought a year of plus so I'm looking at a $40 warranty.

As someone who works in this industry (but not for Assurant), I'll say that $50 for coverage during months 13-36 isn't that bad. To make it worthwhile, you have to believe that there is a greater than 12.5% chance that your PS4 will malfunction during months 13-36 (assuming the PS4 stays at $400 for a while). Barring a red ring disaster, the failure rate during these months will probably be 5-10%, so you're not paying too much of a premium for some additional peace of mind. Don't bother with the $10 add-on for damage unless you move your systems around a lot. Most of us don't.

I'll be glad to answer any questions via PM if anyone has any questions about the offering, claims process, whether they use refurbs or not (the answer is YES, once they have a pipeline of product to repair), or anything else. They don't make it clear on the site, but it's almost certainly not an advanced exchange program so you will have to send your unit in, wait an undisclosed amount of time, and then get back either your repaired unit or a replacement unit (either new or refurb).

I'm not buying this, but I wouldn't blame you if you did.

P.S. Don't bother buying it for the Vita or PS3. They are much worse deals since they are half the price brand new and will certainly get cheaper soon.

Not bad, but I wonder if they expect the machines to break easily.

Hell, no. Insurance and warranties are extremely profitable. They expect the machines to be of high quality and make $50-60 for doing nothing.

Is the warranty a 1 time exchange? So if it breaks after 18 months, is that it or does my replacement continue to carry the remaining time of the warranty?

One-time exchange.

Strongly considering the $60 plan. I'm careful with my stuff, but shit happens.

Just get the $50 plan. How often do you move your console?

I'm in. However, is this is a limited time offer?

Nope. They'll always offer this. The pricing might go down slightly as the PS4 gets cheaper.

Squaretrade does a better deal than this, don't they?

Nope. A 3-year plan is $53.99 but the first year is a waste since it runs in parallel with your manufacturer's warranty plan. You can only purchase it within 30 days of your purchase date whereas you can buy the Sony plan up through day 365, but the number of days are a wash. If you have PS+, that tips the scales even more in favor of the Sony plan.

With that said, you'll probably get better customer service through Squaretrade and they guarantee a replacement (or the dollar value) within 5 days.

How does Amazon cover console warranties?

They don't. Sony handles the manufacturer warranty.

I do attribute the probability of the console bricking in the first three years to be above 15%, so this is a good deal for me regardless of risk aversion.

By the way, this is good news for Sony's expected reliability of the hardware. They are offering a fairly extensive and relatively cheap insurance plan, which usually implies a low probability of defect. They are confident on the reliability of the PS4.

I picked up the 360 insurance just on a whim and it helped me in multiple RRoDs, so there's no way I'm not getting this. ESPECIALLY with there being a discount for PS+ members!
