New thread for this as this is one hell of a divided Sonic game as of late.

I beat the game on Wii U and my personal opinion in short is I can see why it's so divided, but you can see my full review post here:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost...postcount=1422

I'll gladly try the 3DS demo, but wow it does look rough going by HellfireComms playthrough:

So for NA users trying out the demo of both for the first time, what are your impressions! :)

Thanks for the head's-up! I'm glad these are finally available. I really think they should have been made available prior to launch.

Depending on the level, the game will demo well. Much of the latter half of the game brings some fairly frustrating experiences though.

Should just be Windy Hill Act 1, maybe Act 2 as well? (On Wii U), think the Windy Hill Tutorial and Act 1 are in the 3DS demo.

Played, beat and really enjoyed the Wii U version. I'll probably download the 3DS demo in a bit. And yeah, this game is absolutely divisive.

Cool cool. I played the Wii U demo once at a store kiosk, and it didn't really click with me, but I only spent like 5 minutes with it. I'll download it and try again.

About time. I already finished the full game and overall I'm happy with it. Hopefully the demo can convince people to buy it.

I liked the Wii U version enough to consider the 3DS version, so this is really cool.

I am also the only person in the world that preferred Generations 3DS over the console/PC one, so there's that too.

Tried it, thought it was absolutely terrible. The controls were horrible and the game/level design was bland as hell. Sure looked pretty in 1080p though. Honestly, just a personal preference I guess, I haven't liked Sonic games in well over a decade.

Nah, I beat the game a few days ago on Wii U and it's total garbage. It really is that bad.

Finished the Wii U version a couple of weeks ago.

It's initially awkward and hard as hell, and the endgame feebly sputters out at the point when it should be hitting you over the head with 5000 kilotons of awesome, but for the most part, I absolutely loved it. It's easily up there with the best in the series IMO.

I usually have a decent tolerance for Sonic games, hell Sonic 2 is still one of my favorite games ever and I really liked Sonic 3, but beyond that it's been a little hard for me to like any of the rest. I beat Sonic Adventure back on Dreamcast and enjoyed it, but that could have been because of Shiny New Hardware syndrome.

This, though, was just... again the controls just didn't work for me, the level design seemed to be utter shit, almost like they were like hey let's take the Mario Galaxy idea but completely fail to translate that into Sonic gameplay.

Speaking personally, Sonic: Lost World is one of my new favourite games of the 8th console generation. True, it definitely is a game where there is no middle ground for it's appeal (you either love it, or you hate it), but I genuinely had a grand time with this game.

The 3DS version has snappier controls but the parkour doesn't feel nearly as weighty and the level design is drab, lifeless and boring.

I said it before and I'll say it again: Windy Hill is the most cohesive and best-designed world in the entire game in both versions. I think AniHawk said that he was pretty impressed with the demo and then going on to play the main game, he realized that it was the strongest area in the game, almost.

I should really write up impressions for the Wii U version since I finished that with most Red Rings collected, but I kind of don't have the inspiration/motivation to do so. And I suspect that given my impressions about the game overall being oddly designed and not exactly living up to its potential, it may not be to some people's liking. I will say that there is some stuff that I'd like to see expanded upon or combined with other types of gameplay in the most recent games like the Parkour aspect, but in this instance, I don't necessarily feel like the game is cohesive at all... especially in the latter half of the game.

I haven't finished the 3DS version. I dunno if Lijik has. Guess Who seems to still be hacking away at it. I think Sega1991 has since he was talking about the hard mode earlier today. But having finished the majority of the 3DS version, I don't like it very much at all.

Are the 3DS and Wii U versions exactly the same game? Or are they only thematically similar (like Generations)?

Thematically similar. They may have the same world names and same narrative, but the level designs are dramatically different so you aren't exactly playing the same game.

Additionally the 3DS has special stages to get the Chaos Emeralds, whereas the Wii U version doesn't.

My opinion, based off the demo, is that it does one thing really well. I think this is the first Sonic game in a while that allows you to really "go fast". I feel that is at the core of what Sonic is, and it has been missing for a while. I can see why some people wouldn't like it though.

Ok after like 4-5 playthroughs of Windy Hill on the Wii U version, I gotta say that Sonic controls much better than a lot of people were saying with impressions and stuff. Once you figure out the spindash and homing attack/homing kick mechanics it's much more enjoyable.

One thing that was odd to me in a way was how they just threw you in the game without any tutorial of how to use the parkour. I'm guessing they wanted the player to figure it out by themselves? I don't mind that, but hell it's the first level. Not everyone is as adept at picking up the controls as others.

Other than that, the graphics look crisp as always, 60fps looks good. I like the music. I liked what I played! Hopefully I can find this for a decent price during Black Friday.

I just tried both demos a handful of times, so I think I have a decent idea about my impressions on each.

Wii U: The controls definitely have a bit of a learning curve, but I got used to them by the second or third time I played through the level. As for the level design, I'm slightly torn. On the one hand, there's way too many automated segments with boosters and springs everywhere. At the same time, though, I love how open the stage is with its crazy number of alternate paths. I'll definitely pick the game up in a few months after a price drop, but I'm glad I didn't pick it up at launch.

3DS: The controls seem pretty close to the Wii U version aside from wall running being a bit twitchier. The stages are just a bit less automated than the one in the Wii U demo, but they're also much simpler with never more than 2 possible paths. I played the Wii U stage quite a few times but never found more than 3 Red Rings. In the 3DS stage, though, I got 3 Red Rings on my first run through. I also dislike how you have to kill all of the enemies to progress on occasion. The 3DS version doesn't seem bad, but I'm definitely more interested in the Wii U version.

Curious to hear what people will think of the 3DS version. The controls are super tight, but it takes time to get used to the interplay between going fast and and running at a slower, steadier pace, along with mastering the parkour stuff. I had to play for a while until I mastered the controls and now flying around levels is a lot of fun, especially if you enjoy speed running.
