Well I bit the bullet and went ahead and picked up the Nintendoland Deluxe on my break along with The Wonderful 101. Kamiya's lovechild and Mario 3D World sent me over the edge, plus I havent seen many deals (Black Friday or otherwise) so I said fuck it.

Before anyone asks, I didn't pick up the Mario/Luigi U bundle because I didn't want a Mario overdose before next Friday. Plus, I look forward to getting used to the gamepad via Nintendoland (which you all said was pretty cool anyway).

I already have a wiimote+, chuk and original pro controller at home. But I do have a couple of questions before I dive in:

- Should I expect a 45 minute - 60 minute update as soon as I turn it on?

- Is there a noticeable visual difference with OG Wii games since they're running through an HDMI? I have a decent library of great titles that'd I'd love to see cleaned up a bit.

- How does transferring my Wii VC games to the Wii U work? How does that $1.50 charge occur? I have Super Metroid and Super Castlevania 4 on my Wii. Will the U know that I purchased them already or something? I'm guessing I'm not going to be able to transfer over titles like Chrono, DKC or FFIII?

My update took around an hour. I would recommend putting it as close to your router as possible until it has been updated.

You have to transfer your Wii data over to your Wii U. Once you have that on there games you purchased on your Wii will be discounted in the Wii U eshop

all titles you transfer over are playable in Wii mode. It's if you want to play them on the Wii U side and get the added features that you have to pay an upgrade fee

Pretty much everything transfers over, you just play them in Wii mode. The eShop can detect your Wii Shop Channel purchases and will update the cost automatically

I'm certain you'll have to update to the latest firmware from a month or two ago.

This is Nintendo's video on Wii to Wii U system transfer: http://youtu.be/eaeYXkQX1Xc

Once you do that, any titles on the VC that are found on both Wii and Wii U that you transferred will have the discount price in the eShop.

I'm personally not that picky about older titles on HD screens, but I really liked how RE 4 Wii Edition, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Skyward Sword looked via HDMI.

I'm not 100% sure on how to transfer, so I won't comment on that, but yes, you should do the system update and get it out of the way. It will make everything quicker and smoother, plus if it's anything like other Nintendo Hardware, they'll eventually have you forcefully update with the software on a game disk.

As for Wii games, they don't upscale, so you'll still have 480p. But they look nice when using the Gamepad as a screen. If you really want upscaled Wii titles, just get Dolphin.

Wii games look better. Something like Metroid Prime looks very clean. It's no Dolphin, but it removes some of the sting of the Wii graphics. I was very pleasantly surprised given how much Nintendo downplayed it.

Hmmm... I have no idea. I guess the big updates should be pre-installed if you got a recent system.

The difference I noticed was minimal. If you used composite cables on your Wii however, you should see a pretty big difference.

All your VC games will transfer to the Wii mode of the console (it's sandboxed). You only pay the $1 fee if you want the VC games to show up in the main WiiU menu with updated WiiU features (play on the controller, save states, etc.). All the VC games are still playable normally in Wii mode.

Expect maybe an hour to 2 hours depending on your internet speed I'd say.

IMO there is a noticable difference when playing Wii games on the Wii U, a lot of the games I used to play (Skyward sword, Xenoblade) on the Wii with component looked like ass, but it hardly bothers me on the Wii U

I think you need to have your club nintendo registered on both eshops or something.

1. It can take a bit but you can do the download in the background while you play something.

2.I'd say the look better on an HDTV through HDMI but they still look best on an SDTV.

3. You have to download an app on the Wii and you need an SD card for the data. The $1.50 charge appears automatically as a discount on the titles you already own. You can play the games you mention on the Wii mode but not on the Wii U mode itself until they are realased specifically for Wii U.

You will have to redownload whatever was purchased on the wii shop channel. You cant just stick the same SD card that housed your downloaded Wii goodies in to the WiiU after doing the save data/licenses transfer :(. That took me a WHILE. Also the SD card slot is really only for Wii mode software storage and saves if I remember correctly. WiiU HDD and USB ports are for WiiU storage

I bought the M&L bundle and had to update - it took about an hour. I did get the option to have it download and install in the background though, as I remember, and could've dived straight into playing, so the situation isn't as bad as at launch.

The transfer requires the Wii, the Wii U and an SD card. You have to prep the SD card on the Wii U, move it to the Wii and transfer the games to the card, then back to the Wii U to move from card to U. The eshop will then know what you've already bought and if available as a Wii U title will let you 'upgrade' it on the cheap for off screen play. The whole process is a pain in the arse alleviated by an adorable Pikmin transfer sequence.

The $1.50 is only incurred if you upgrade to the Wii U version of the title. There's a big upside in that you can then play via the gamepad. Otherwise those licenses transfer to your Wii U under the Wii emulator, which means they play the same as they always did.

Does that help?

great bait and click title;)

this part makes me realize how confusing the wiiu is even to informed consumers.

actually if you have a wiimote you dont have much reason to upgrade. you now can play all wiimode games offtv with the wiimote.

Got mine about a month ago. It'll take about an hour to do the system update, to set up your Mii (you can easily just transfer over the one you have on 3DS so they're the same), to set up your eshop, to get netflix and youtube updates, etc. W101 has a small update as well.

It'll be the last time you have to worry about it really. It can download all of them in sleep mode when you aren't even using it. Just set it up to download today, and then go get some food. When you come back it'll be done.

And yeah, NSMB U is so much better than I expected. If you liked Super Mario World on SNES at all, you have to own it. Super Luigi U is hard as fuck too, so if you want more challenge to go with it (you will) it's totally a worthy purchase as well.

I'd recommend getting more than W101 honestly. It has a steep learning curve. People on here like to pretend its perfect, but I got it too, and I haven't gone back to it after that first hour. You'll either love it or hate it. I fully intend to go back to it later, but I'm just saying, you'll probably want something else to play along with it. Getting the Mario bundle would have probably been a better value, and then getting NintendoLand used (I got it for $15). Either way is fine though.

I very highly recommend Zelda WW HD (I got this bundle). It makes smart use of the gamepad, and it's drop dead gorgeous, and you will get sucked into the MiiVerse very quickly.

As far as transferring games over, I haven't done it yet. I need to. Once you transfer your games and saves, they won't be on the Wii anymore though. It'll basically be a slim Gamecube and backup Wii at that point.

Yeah, this needs to be priority #1 for their updates. Imagine Xenoblade on the gamepad, off TV play.

You done good, son... You done good...

Anyways...

-There are acouple updates. First is a proper system update and that can be kind of a pain and will take awhile. The second is a gamepad setup update which looks like it'll take longer than it actually will. I had mine go for acouple minutes til about 40% of the way, and then it just jumped all the way to the end.

-Wii games do look a bit better, but it's still clearly being rendered at a lower resolution. Some games it's more noticeable than others.

-Transferring downloadable games requires you to download an app on your Wii. It's best to have both systems hooked up and just switch between inputs, but it'll largely just be preparing an SD card, transferring the stuff over, then putting it onto your WiiU and having it transfer yet again. It can certainly take awhile but once it's done, it's done. You can play all your Wii software in the 'Wii Mode' of the WiiU totally free of charge. You only have to pay $1.50 if you want to update those games with save-states, Miiverse support, and Off-TV play

Sooner the better on those. When I got mine it was the last one at the store. The Mario bundle is just as good though. Great value there.
