It'll take about an hour to do the system update, to set up your Mii (you can easily just transfer over the one you have on 3DS so they're the same), to set up your eshop, to get netflix and youtube updates, etc. W101 has a small update as well.
It'll be the last time you have to worry about it really. It can download all of them in sleep mode when you aren't even using it. Just set it up to download today, and then go get some food. When you come back it'll be done.
And yeah, NSMB U is so much better than I expected. If you liked Super Mario World on SNES at all, you have to own it. Super Luigi U is hard as fuck too, so if you want more challenge to go with it (you will) it's totally a worthy purchase as well.
I'd recommend getting more than W101 honestly. It has a steep learning curve. People on here like to pretend its perfect, but I got it too, and I haven't gone back to it after that first hour. You'll either love it or hate it. I fully intend to go back to it later, but I'm just saying, you'll probably want something else to play along with it. Getting the Mario bundle would have probably been a better value, and then getting NintendoLand used (I got it for $15). Either way is fine though.
I very highly recommend Zelda WW HD (I got this bundle). It makes smart use of the gamepad, and it's drop dead gorgeous, and you will get sucked into the MiiVerse very quickly.
As far as transferring games over, I haven't done it yet. I need to. Once you transfer your games and saves, they won't be on the Wii anymore though. It'll basically be a slim Gamecube and backup Wii at that point.
Yeah, this needs to be priority #1 for their updates. Imagine Xenoblade on the gamepad, off TV play.
Well I don't know if it's just me but Wii games played on Wii with component cables + HDTV definitely look slightly better than Wii games played on Wii U (Wii mode) with HDMI cable. However, Wii U is better if you don't have component cables on the Wii.
I picked up the mario+luigi bundle at my wal-mart, it was literally the last one there, I was actually wanting the nintendoland bundle but Im happy with this bundleSooner the better on those. When I got mine it was the last one at the store. The Mario bundle is just as good though. Great value there.

It's great to play NSMB U off TV, or sail around in WW HD a bit. Very relaxing, and you can enjoy it in short sessions.
I'm not saying W101 is a bad game, because I haven't beaten it yet or fully learned everything. But, I can definitely see someone turning on their new Wii U, only having that game, hitting the learning curve, and then having nothing to really play for a while. Feeling comfortable with the controls can be hit and miss, especially near the beginning.

Lego City is a perfect game to release some stress, very charming and funny and you will keep playing this for a long long time. Kids love it too.
NSMBU/NSLU are great games but I get you. You can always leave those for some droughts later. I have to pick up W101, Pikmin 3, Deus Ex, Batman AC and NFSMWU myself. The latter two are pretty cheap.

OP, be aware that if your Wii U is set to output at 1080p and your TV is set to 1:1 pixel mapping, you'll see some thick borders around most Wii games. This is actually a good thing, the image is scaling better so it's less blurry than it would be otherwise. The other thing the Wii U now does (since the last update I think) is automatically display 4:3 games in 4:3 so you don't have to change your TV settings, which is really nice. It displays properly if you clone the image onto the pad, too.

Don't know if it's a Europe thing or my setup, but my Wii games look noticeably blurrier on my Wii U. I used component cables on the Wii and (obviously) HDMI on the U, but Wii mode definitely makes games look fuzzier on everything except my friend's American TV.

And I usually feel the same as you -- when a new game in a series is coming out soon, I avoid playing earlier entries in the series to avoid burnout. I think Nintendoland will be a good even-outer until next Friday. I also wanted to finally get my hands on Earthbound because even though i grew up with it I never got a chance to experience it.
There's no disadvantages to transferring all your Wii stuff over. Until recently, there was no way to get surround sound from Wii software, but the last update fixed that. HDMI is an improvement all around, but honestly the difference isn't all that huge from 480p component. The system upscales it for you rather than letting your TV do it, so if you have a crappy monitor, that's a plus.
I understand why you didn't pick up NSMBU, but later down the line, I'd still recommend it if you are at all a fan of the older 2D Marios. Mechanically, it's really one of the best.

Yep. I honestly didn't like the NSMB series much, but this game convinced me. It's basically the spiritual successor to Mario World on SNES. EDIT: There are 94 flagpoles (including fortresses, airships and castles). This applies to both NSMBU and NSLU.

I think Soda Jungle has a secret levels that also serves as a shortcut to the second castle, and also has another secret exit that leads to a shortcut to the next world (but no secret level I guess if the 1 per map thing is true, I can't recall atm).Maybe I'm not counting those as secrets?
