"It is a discussion about niche and mass market, I think," he told us. "If you make your product more niche, you'll get more happy fans, but that audience will be smaller - some people won't care, some people will love it.
"When we did the original Bad Company and the sequel, we got a lot of criticism. Why would I play this? It's not a serious shooter, I don't care about this. I want a serious shooter with a more hard-boiled angle. And we thought it was fun! We loved it, we thought it was a great game. The narrative was amazing and the characters were amazing.
"So it's not that we've buried the crew, so to speak," he continued. "But it is true that for some reason if you want to make a game for the masses, you need to be more neutral when it comes to things like humour, because humour is very personal. Some people love it, some people hate it."

What. WHAT.
This just in: people are IDIOTS. I mean seriously, you want a serious, no-messing-about shooter? You're so starved for choice, you only have EVERY OTHER SHOOTER to choose from.

No DICE
Sounds like a hot plate of bullshit. So Bad Company was so niche that you made a sequel, and a huge expansion for that sequel?
Fuck you, focus groups and 'we want the CoD audience' mindset.
Agreed. Straight to MP.
Bad Company had forgettable single player and some of the smallest BF Multiplayer in the franchises history. It pissed off gamers who we're wanting BF3 and the scale of early BF games. The fact they wasted time on console exclusives just pissed off PC gamers who were their primary fan base up to that point.
Not surprising that DICE just doesn't get it.

Niche does not equal 5 millions* copies sold
*may not be the exact number

BC2 had absolutely no humour whatsoever and it still sold worse than BF3. What's this guy talking about?
Hardboiled?
Yeah, what? Super serious with no humor? Sounds like fucking CoD.
I miss the BFBC2 MP...
Soo Good
Soo Good
Too bad i'm part of that niche group, won't ever buy a "serious" BF game again.
I loved the humour in Bad Company. Especially liked the bit where your squad discussed the movie Predator before attacking an enemy base.
I wanted to ride Truckasours Rex in Bad Company 3. :(
Dudebros want a visceral, cold experience. No place for humor anymore.
Is Dice talking about single player again? they should stop that.
Who cares? The MP was excellent.
Shooter fans are the worst.
Really? REALLY? Sigh. Son, I am disappoint. Thought Bad Company single player was pretty good as far as modern military games go. :/

Sounds like this guy won't be buying BFBC3...
I definitely didn't love bad company 2 for the single player.
What. It made the Campaign mode somewhat playable compared to BF3/4. BC2 was a bit less humourous though. BC1 was great. Haggard <3
Fuck em. Make the funniest Bad Company game you can.
Throw away the key.I want a serious shooter with a more hard-boiled angle.
But BC2 sold alot like it sold really well O_o
I miss the Bad Company 1 humour, the sequel was far too serious.
I want the next Battlefield to be a mix of TF2 style characters with Split/Second levels of destruction.

Fuck yeah bro.
No fuck you.
Fuck you.
FUCK YOOOOOOOOUUUUUUU

Ah, yes, humour, that niche hipster pasttime.
I had about as much fun playing through the BC2 campaign as I did with BF4. So not that much, never realized so many people seemed to really enjoy it.
Stop making game for the masse.
BC3 is going to be straight-up super serious dude bro business
I've played every BF game apart from BF2142, and my favourite MP is actually BFBC2. Rush mode in that game delivered a level of intensity coupled with a requirement for teamwork which hasn't been matched by any other game in my opinion. BF3 was a big step backwards in my opinion. I really miss BFBC2 as it was at its height - I still jump on from time to time, but full Rush matches are a thing of the past in my region :(Originally Posted by Wthermans

lol, the problem with gaming in my eyes right now is that every freakin game is serious. Even the games in genres that are generally not serious are not too serious.
With the potential to put imagination onto the screen in 3D, all we get nowadays is ultra-realism and not much fantasy. Even Fantasy games like Skyrim are grounded in reality. I dunno. But I mean this is bad company. It had humor .... so it was too niche for EA.
Fun stuff.
Super serious with no humor = call of duty, battlefield, halo, and 95% of all the other shooters out there currently.

I don't think this is about humour, I think it's more about the personality of a product. that feedback suggests the people didn't want something that had its own feel, they wanted something that was 'carbon copy badass'.
So it's either produce something you love personally, and put a lot of heart into it to make sure it satisfies everything it needs to for you to consider it great - leading to a product that, while not favoureded by all, has personality, and heart, and feels more like a labour of love because you're making something you really care about.
or
Produce something as bland as possible to try and make everyone kind of happy?
Personalities will clash, but this is better than no personality at all...
...surely?
I guess neutral and bland lead to more profits because it's harder to offend specific tastes that way, and the masses are used to chowing on microwave quality meals.
Oh, yeh, i realise none of this is particularly astute. I'm just venting.
The masses.
Gross.

WTF it was at least awesome and i have played the campaign at least, i mean freaking Haggard.
Its seems like every studio wants to deliver on dem feels and fail so hard its just pure comics.

I would think 2 absolute horseshit campaigns in a row would be even more niche.
Gruel for everyone!
The masses want to feel like they are partaking in EPIC important shit that'll change the world, not farting about with characters with actual personalities. The target audience of males in their teens is likely going to want a game that feels srs and mature.
