The Ys-iest Purchase You'll Make All Year

Ys I & II Chronicles+ came out this year, so thread title fail.

I just got an epic pay increase at work, so I think I might celebrate by buying myself a Vita, even if I liked Ys Seven the least of all the Ys games, I still probably have to play this.

Plus, Battle #58, yo.

Here's what I had to say after completing it.

Overall, it was quite good. I think it accomplishes absolutely everything Ys 7 set out to do in a better way. In terms of gameplay and stuff, my complaints are fairly minor. I think the map design is done in such a way to deliberately make people like me uncomfortable/anxious, because there are so many branching paths that I'm really worried about missing stuff. Most of the time in the game was probably spent backtracking to make sure I'm not taking the "right" path that leads toward progressing the story.

As an Ys 4 game, though, I'm less positive about it. It takes many concepts from Dawn of Ys and Mask of the Sun and uses them kind of half-heartedly, to the point that the game kind of feels like it's just got an Ys 4 skin on top of it "just because." They've taken characters that we got to know years and years ago and made them completely different just to fit this new vision, which just didn't sit right with me. I think this game goes even further with that than Lufia DS did. It makes you think, "why did you even bother to relate this to Ys 4?" and that's not the feeling I wanted to have about the game. : For years, I dreamt of finally seeing Falcom's version of Ys 4, but I highly doubt that this was it.

Still, though, as I said, it's a good game, and perhaps if you go into it not thinking it's an Ys 4 remake or anything like that, it'll be easier to get past that. Or if you never played the other Ys 4 games at all.

Is Dogi not in this at all?

He makes a very small cameo appearance, but that's it. He's not part of the story, nor is he playable, unfortunately. I guess the idea is, if he were in it any more than that, Adol's memory loss would be kind of a non-issue since Dogi would tell him everything he could possibly need to know about himself.

NOOOOOOOOOO.

YMMV -- the Celceta version of Battle #58 is my absolute favorite by leaps and bounds. I consider it an improvement over all previous versions in every way. I mean, just listen to that guitar solo, and the key-changed breakdown afterward... soooooo good!!

Seems likely, since the Japanese version is 911 MB. It does claim that you need 100 MB minimum for save games, though, so altogether, it adds up to over 1 GB. (Plus, you usually need about twice the size of a game free on your memory stick in order to unpack and install it -- that's the part people often tend to forget -- so while the game itself may only take up 1 GB, you'll almost certainly need 2 GB in order to download it from PSN.)

We're not developers, so no. We can only publish stuff that other people have made.

If Falcom remakes anything Ys, though, you can bet we'll be interested in translating and publishing it in the west!

He's talking about people being obsessed about 2007. Trails in the Sky SC hit PSP in Japan in 2007. It's yet another post about that game in an XSEED-related thread obviously.

Although given the likely intended place 2007 WAS kind of a keystone year for that generation.

With all the Dragon Quest games stuck in Japan that neither Square nor Nintendo seem willing to bring over here, are those a possibility at any point for XSeed?

I don't mean to derail, I am for sure buying Celcetta, but I'm a huge fan of both you guys and the DQ games so I have to ask.

It's Square Enix. The chances of them giving any of their games to another publisher -- particularly from a series as big as Dragon Quest -- is virtually nil.

And even if they were willing to give up these games, I doubt a small publisher like us could afford the licensing cost.

We'll stick with Ys, I think. ;)

I'd say the ideal is somewhere in between, but really it's just "throw away that shoulder shit."

Still, there is nostalgic value in that kind of design. But it's not as if Falcom's really been all for unique, daring visual design for the most part, just decently done typical anime stuff normally.

Had it pre-ordered for awhile. Even though I bought Oath In Felghana, this will be the first Ys I play since Ys3 back in the day, which has always been one of my favorite early 16bit games.

Comes out on the 26th, but Amazon still says Dec 2 for expected delivery date... I hope I get it earlier than expected.

Never pre-ordered, but I'm hoping to get my grubby hands on that nice collector's edition.

I'm watching some of the gameplay trailers right now, and it looks very much like Ys 7 - just with higher resolution graphics.

Interestingly, because of the fact that it's higher resolution, some of the byproducts of Falcom design - less detailed backgrounds, simple level design - stick out a little more than they did on the PSP. Granted, the combat is so good that I'm probably not going to notice any of that at all once I start playing.

Out of curiosity: is there anyway to play Dawn of Ys in English? I've been thinking about somehow figuring out a way to play it for myself, and I've watched enough Let's Plays to be familiar with its plot, but it has a charming quality to it that I'm oddly attracted to.

I tried the Japanese demo and was instantly sold by the awesome music during the first part of it. I actually kept the demo after I had finished it, so I can listen to dat music again some more.

I have the Limited Edition on pre-order. Gotta get that 3 disc soundtrack.

It's going to be my first Ys ever. My body is ready.

I'd question the GS order still even assuming that was done in store. A lot of games used to really use that JUST as the ship date and would actually be in stores the following day, and while even more niche titles have been out on that day rather than just shipping that day XSEED may still follow that. The only reason to have hope is that Release Date Delivery popped up on Amazon, and I don't know what to make of that with everyone having reported December dates.

Yes that is only on the PS3 (maybe PS4). I have downloaded a 400mb file when I only had 500mb to begin with.

It's also true for PSP, so I assumed it was true for Vita too -- especially since the warning about it is present in Vita game descriptions on J-PSN, though that could be just a standard warning attached to every game on the service.

I have yet to get anywhere near filling up my Vita memory card, though (the majority of my Vita collection is physical), so I'm not entirely certain.

what other projects can we look forward to from xseed in the coming 2014 year ?

The only other announced projects from us at the moment are Ragnarok Odyssey ACE for PS3 and Vita (physical and digital), Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky on Steam, and Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter on Steam and PSP digital.

We have other unannounced projects too, though, of course. ;)

I'd say the ideal is somewhere in between, but really it's just "throw away that shoulder shit."

Nooooo, keep it! Spaulders 4 lyfe!! ;)

wyrdwad, does the NA version have the stuff patched into the JP version recently to make it work with the Vita TV? (i.e., button options for the things that require touch, like the puzzles) The 1.02 patch.

Not at launch, no -- the patch wasn't ready in time to be applied before mastering. The game should theoretically still be Vita TV compatible as-is, however (the touchscreen emulation via L3 and R3 will suffice for the touch puzzles), but I can't confirm that with any certainty just yet.

Obviously, though, we will be looking into applying the patch in the future -- and if Vita TV is announced for release in the west, I'm sure that'll light a fire under our butts to get it done quicker. ;)

Interestingly, because of the fact that it's higher resolution, some of the byproducts of Falcom design - less detailed backgrounds, simple level design - stick out a little more than they did on the PSP. Granted, the combat is so good that I'm probably not going to notice any of that at all once I start playing.

Falcom has never really been about graphics, focusing more on gameplay (as any good developer should). That said, though, the graphics in Celceta really aren't bad at all, and there are a lot of things that put it head and shoulders above Ys Seven in terms of presentation (like a crazy-huge draw distance, and really subtle day/night transitions).

so is it the same rock paper scissor system as in 7? ala each party member is good against 1 enemy type and does like no damage on other types?

Same basic system, but the damage output is much less drastically changed by attack type than in Ys Seven -- if you attack an enemy with the wrong attack type, you still do decent enough damage, just not AS MUCH. And if you make a point of hitting enemies with the damage type their weak to, you get bigger bonuses this time around (refills on SP, experience bonuses, etc.). So it's more like a positive reinforcement approach this time.

That said, I still pretty much just used Karna to kill everybody whenever I could. She's fast enough, and her Napalm Shot skill is devastating enough, that I was like, meh, who cares about attack type? It's Karna time! ;)

There's now a regular guard as well, which becomes a Flash Guard when timed perfectly, and works just like it did in Ys Seven. After Flash Guarding, you next hit is guaranteed critical.

Celceta also introduces the "Flash Move," which occurs if you dodge/roll just in the nick of time, and has the added effect of making enemies move in slow-motion for a few seconds after successfully pulling it off.
