Hey guys, this is one of those troubleshooting threads.

I'm having trouble with my Wii U. It doesn't happen all the time, but it does regularly: when I'm turning on my Wii U, it shows the console's logo, and then the music stops and it apparently freezes. When I disconnect the external HDD I use with it, everything works perfectly.

Did anyone else run into this issue? This is the HDD I have connected to the console.

Are you powering the drive by plugging it into the wall?

Yes. It uses an external power source.

Does the HDD have its own power plug? If you're using USB, make sure you're using a Y cable, otherwise you might problems. Personally, I've been using an external HDD for months, never had any lock ups.

Did you try to reformat the HDD once more in the Wii U options?

Edit : reading the product description... maybe it's the Power Saving mode causing problems?

Is it sitting on a winecooler ?
If so, post the ref. of said winecooler.

I'm sorry my technical knowledge stops right there :(

Can you test it with another HDD to see if you can replicate the problem?

"Green Eco Friendly with Power Saving Mode"

If this is becoming active while your Wii U is off, your HDD might not be powering up fast enough for the Wii U to read it appropriately. I've only ever seen this lockup issue when the HDD isn't receiving enough power.

Hmmm... That sounds like a possibility. I'll look into that - although I have have absolutely no idea on how to configure that option.

I wish I had a winecooler!

Unfortunately, no. This is the only one I have around, haha.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I'll try looking into that.

Thanks!

I thought it may be the problem, too, but I then realised he gets lock up at boot (while the eco mode activates after 5mn of inactivity).

But yes, Brasil's best bet is to try out with another HDD and see if he keeps getting lock ups.

Got the same issue.
What I do is boot up without HDD, and after its on the menu, hook the HDD up.

But I have no solution for it.
Multiple HDD's , same result.
Im afraid to format, cause I have no idea where and how the Wiiu saves my account with the games I bought.

EDIT:

One Samsung drive 500Gb and 1 WD drive 1 TB, both external powered.

Go into System setting and there'll be a section called data management or something.

That'll show you what data is where and you can copy across any data from HDD to internal storage and Visa-Versa.

So copy your save data across, reformat the drive and then redownload any games.

My old 3,5 HDD in a enclosure is giving me a lot of "not enough power" errors

I hear a īGLOCī sound, then both screens go black. After a few seconds the message about lack of power shows up.

I did reformat the HDD yesterday. I also rearranged it to plug the HDD directly to the wall plug

Still have to redownload Deus Ex (14GB, it will take a whole day) and move it to the external HDD to test it once and for all.

Plug a USB thumb drive in and check to see if the Wii U will format it. Then copy (not move) some game save or game data to the USB thumb drive and try to play it off there.

Then call Nintendo.

You can go to system settings => data mangement and move any hard drive save data back to the internal storage or to a USB stick. For moving to a USB stick, just connection both the hard drive and usb stick, turn on the Wii U and copy the data to the USB. If you can put it on the internal storage, do that also.

Connect your drive before powering on the system.

It happens to me too.

Remember to turn off your HDD when you turn off your console and to turn your HDD on BEFORE you turn your Wii U on.

A similar thing also happens to me whenever I enter the data management page from the settings and get out of it, for some strange reason my Wii U would then not be able to identify my HDD anymore and then I'll have to turn my Wii U off, turn the HDD off, turn the HDD on and then the Wii U on once again...

Do you have SpotPass (while 'off) enabled? If so, do you notice any HDD activity during those times when the system connects to the net (orange light)?

I'm kind of relieved to see I'm not the only one with this problem.

My HDD is pretty silent, so I can't really say either way. I do get the orange light a lot, though.
