With the launch of PlayStation 4 in our region only a few hours away, we wanted to give you a quick update on what to expect from PSN when you finally get your hands on your PS4.

Following the successful launch of PS4 in North America on the 15th November, we have seen an unprecedented influx of players onto PSN. When we launch in Europe on Friday, once again, we are expecting record sales and record numbers of people logging onto PSN at similar times, alongside the North American players already on PSN.

We want to make sure that your online experience is positive. To help ensure that this happens, we have made the decision to switch off a couple of features for European customers on day one. These features will then be switched back on a few days later, once the intensity of launch day calms down.

The features we are temporarily disabling are:

What’s New – Discover and engage with all of your friends’ PS4 related activity
Content Information Screen – See friends’ activity and information specific to the title you are looking at

Not to worry, all of the other features of PSN will be fully available on day one. You’ll be able to play online multiplayer games with friends and your gaming community, get trophies, make friends and share videos and live broadcast your games so you can have a great online gaming experience.

Hopefully this preemptive action will prevent some of the issues we saw at US launch, although I'm surprised this needs to be considered. At least we should all be able to get on PSN in the early hours of tomorrow morning :)

Well that isn't exactly ideal, but I guess it's better than PSN going to it's knees.

They really want to make sure PSN is stable obviously. Like the days of locking OT for E3 here :)

Hope they can get it solid within a matter of hours rather than days, What's New is something I would use.

Hopefully it goes smoothly but I feel psn is going to be mighty slow when it hits Europe.

Oh dear, when SCEE says something will "only be a few days" it always inevitably disappears for at least a month :p

Is this to alleviate the stress on PSN? I guess it can only be a good thing, unfortunate though...

Makes sense. Servers will be dead and this is one way to avoid it in the beginning.

We had this in North America too. It came back on late Sunday or early Monday if my memory is correct.

Lol. NA beta test indeed!!!!

Anyway, have fun guys. For all of the PSN nonsense at launch, the store was up, I was able to play my games, and able to play multiplayer without a hitch.

I'm okay with that, as long as I can download my games with no trouble.

This is a smart move. They are nice features to be sure, and the OS seems kind of sparse without them, but it is far better to just switch them off completely for a few days and have everything else run more smoothly. I would even be fine if they shut the features off in all territories for a few days, and not just in the EU, if it meant a smooth launch.

It's still crazy to think that a large portion of the world hasn't even gotten their PS4's yet. I am excited for you guys. :D

It's good that they are doing something, but I expect the ship to crash and burn.

DDoS from 1 Million EU PS4 incoming.

Seriously though, this also affect AU PSN, and PSN store wasn't as responsive, either.

They're expecting a LOT of new PS4 owners, then. 1 million+?

Shame, it's super awesome feature imo. I love the livearea on PS Vita, and check it religiously to see what my friend's list is up to. Have been on PS4 as well, when it's been up and running.

Wonder if actions are going to be retroactive on there. ie; Bob buys a game at launch, feature is re-enabled and "Bob bought Super Game 2".

Good point. I really hope so, I'd like to have plenty of activity to check once the feature gets enabled. I also love the Vita activity system.

I'm ok with this if it helps to have a smoother launch. I'll be far too busy with my games to really miss it that much anyway

I like that for some reason. It's a lot more interesting than the PS3's "What's New" for sure.

If it makes PSN more stable like how GAF shuts off avatars and OT during E3 then I'm all for it initially.

Having used them on my PS4, I wholeheartedly disagree.

The feed is super cool, but it was basically as if it didn't work at all during the US launch anyway.

It was definitely disabled since they specifically announced turning it on at some point on the blog or one of their venues.
