I've treated them like crap, tossed them around while moving cables, dropping them, banging them against things, leaving them in dust riddled locations, stuffing them into drawers with other crap, bringing them out again, having them dragged down to the floor by the family pet - EVERYTHING, you get the idea.

I see so many folk with stories of systems that stop working, especially with the last generation we had. Just what the hell are you doing to your systems? Stop bathing with them.

Lucky you, it's like the worst feeling ever, especially this gen with a ps3. Cause not only do you lose $200-300 to nothing, but also all of your saves.
But in reference to the question you're asking, all my systems were lost because of manufacturer errors, at least imo. The gamecube and ps2's disc drives wear out from regular use after a few years. And the ps3... oh boy, I bet you went 360, or are just a few months away from knowing my pain.
The ps3 is built to fail just after it falls out of warranty. With defective thermal paste, on top of non lead sodders, you'll start experiencing overheat problems around your second year of ownership. Enjoy that.[It's happened to everyone I know who's owned a ps3, 4 people including me]

Now, I'm off to go sit in the freezing cold for 5 hours in hopes of replacing it this turkeyday. Happy times!

My old cartridge systems lasted generations, but it all went downhill once the disc based systems emerged.

My 'first' nes, snes, ps1, ps2, xbox, and xbox360 all died. The only one I'm mad about is the 360 since it died before I even finished a single game, the others were 1000s of hours.

I used to feel the same way. Then I had two 360s rrod, a ps3 dead to ylod and a Wi's disc drive die on me. As a great man once said, things break.

You're very lucky OP.I had 5 Sony systems that stopped working (1 PS,2 PS2s,2 PS3s).

My Nintendo systems still work perfectly though (GC,Wii,DS).

Never had a Sega or Xbox console.

Granted I have a bunch of old systems in my attic that I haven't plugged in in about a decade, but my Genesis was the only system I ever had that stopped working when I actually tried to play it.

It is something to do with the newer systems from the newer companies. I've owned pretty much every Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft system ever. I've also owned a couple Sega systems. They only systems I've ever had problems with were the Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3, and PS4. My first Xbox lasted 2 years before it died. My launch 360 died like 3 times. My launch PS3 died after 3 years. And finally my launch PS4 was dead on arrival. My NES still works, though. There is a pattern there...and it is not me.

Yeah, same experience. I've got a nes, and even more suprising a Saturn that still work like new. There's something up with these new consoles...
Except Wii. That sucker is built to last, from my experience.

It lasted a good 2 year like that though and Microsoft replaced it in 2 weeks.

Hmm, I've had all the consoles from the last two gens, and the following wore out -

Dreamcast - Disk drive went
PS2 Chunky - Disk Drive went
DS (Original) - Screens went dodgy, occasionally showing a pink outline of what was on the bottom screen on the top. Could have been a cable issue, but never opened it up to fix it since I figured it was a good time to just get a Lite.
360 - About 3 RROD, the final one just fell outside the 3 year period.

NES (1989) - Still working, bleached cartridge flap (typical of being left in direct sunlight)

SNES (1992) - Still working, partially bleached casing around controller ports (typical)

Gameboy (1992) - Still working but screen has 7 columns of dead pixels

N64 (1997) - Still works, controllers have very loose analogue sticks with atleast 25% increased deadzone, difficult to play some games

***Xbox (2002) - Broken 1 month before xbox 360 release (Dec 2005), HDD clicking error 7. Called Microsoft, quoted (£79), told best to buy a 360 - annoyed but was going to buy one anyway

Gameboy Advanced SP (2003) - Still working, reduced battery life of approximately 7 hours

***Gamecube (2004) - Although it works, in 2009 while playing resident evil 4, the sound cut out and never worked again. I would describe it as broken.

***Xbox 360 (2005) - broken after one year, three red rings, only weeks after warranty expired. Called Microsoft, quoted £80. Didn't do it as I had little money. Several months later extended warranty announced, 360 replaced

***Xbox 360 refurb (2007) - Disc drive is incredibly loud but apparently that is normal. Three red ring in March 2012. Quoted £80 from Microsoft. Repaired using xclamp technique and sold.

Currently gaming with a PC on a laptop but had a rig from 2008 to 2012 - no problems, sold due to finance issues caused by illness. Hopefully returning to PC gaming proper by building my own mini ITX rig/Steam Machine

I would say that with the exception of the 360, these problems are due to increased components and complexity of devices. That being said all of these problems would likely have been fixable by someone knowledgeable for very little cost, although Microsoft, the only company I confronted, chose to charge ridiculous amounts.

Only had 2 component issues with PC, both fixed at zero cost - faulty RAM produced by manufacturer and returned, dust on contacts of graphics card.

I guess I've been lucky with mine, none of my consoles have ever failed.

N64 - working right up until the day I threw it out... still regret that.

GameBoy Color - Working up until... ??? (gave to my brother)

GameBoy Advance - Working up until... ??? (gave to my brother)

Dreamcast - Working up until I gave it away to a friend in college.

GameCube - Working when I gave it to my cousin years ago, still working afaik.

DS - Working when I traded it in for...

Launch DS Lite - Working as of two years ago when I gave it to a friend's kid.

Launch Wii - Working.

3DS - Working when I sold it to a friend. Still working.

Launch Wii U - Working.

The only machine that has ever failed on me (outside of pc's, where I've had motherboards, hard drives and graphics cards invariably fail over the years) was a C128, when the SID chip died. I had another 128 and two C64's, so I was okay.1

I had 2 different Xbox 360s fail. Once was the RROD in '07 on a console purchased in '06, then the disc drive failed on the replacement in like '08. Smooth sailing all the way until 2012 when the Ethernet port got fried which essentially made the console worthless. Moral of the story is that the 360 was terrible hardware and cursed.

Other than that, I've never had a console die on me going all the way back to the Genesis/Nes/SNES days. Nintendo hardware has been especially excellent in my experience. Got a PS4 and it's doing great as well (still gonna extend the warranty though)

I see alot of mention of NES, SNES.

Mine didnt die....but after a few years I had to constantly blow out cartridges and/or the console. I had to take my NES apart, use a beer can clip to help turn it on because the power button got worn down or something.

Also had to leave it apart because the cartridges werent connecting completely when inserted, had to move the cartridge ever so slightly to the side for it to work.

So even back then, consoles had issues.

My Alienware was broken out the box. I had to fix it myself and got it started. Then I found out it had a faulty disk drive, so I sent it back to Bestbuy. Got another one that couldn't power on, but fixed it again and now it's working beautifully. I've had it for 11 months now, and make sure to keep a warranty on it at all times from now on.

My Wii I had for 3 years and then one day it just stopped reading disks. I didn't even touch it but it just stopped working. I had to send it back to Nintendo and get it repaired, got it back within 2 weeks (kinda funny that this happened when I tried to put a new game in it).

My PS2's just stopped working as well. I've had 3 and all of them worked for at least 3 years each before kicking the bucket. They were easy to replace because they were like $100 back then.

My PS3 and X360 have been working beautifully with no problems.

I don't know why but most of my systems just stop working on their own. I usually leave my systesm be so it's not like I even do anything.

My launch 60G uk launch ps3 died with YLOD after about 3 years of heavy use. I had it reflowed 5 times (gave up on 6th..) and on each time it worked for about a month and then failed again.

I have 2 other 60G PS3s that still are going strong, bought used and a slim that is fine.

Op hi tech volume mass production manufacturing has challenges and there is and element of percentages. So far you have been fine and hope you continue to be so, but dont blame others for failing electronics..

I'm lucky enough to have never had to deal with hardware failure. My DS Phat's screen broke, but that was cause someone stepped on it :(

I'm pretty sure the only reason I managed to duck out on hardware issues last gen was cause I waited until the Slim came out to get a PS3 and I skipped the 360.

Launch Wii - still works
PSP God of War edition - still works
PS3 80gb fat - still works
Xbox 360 Halo edition - still works
Vita - still works
Wii U - still works
PS4 - so far good
Xbone - so far good also

Conclusion- only one of my systems failed on me. No baths here, it failed while playing the PS move sports game.

I did have a regular 360 for a week but returned it to Costco after it scratched the shit out of a disk for no reason. Got the halo edition on the exchange. OP is just lucky, and I consider myself pretty lucky thus far as well.

I haven't tried my NES or SNES in nearly 10 years, not sure about those but I think my PSONE still works.

My original GB is already dead though.

I have no idea if my NES or SNES still work but the systems I still might use still work and that's what matters to me (I still want to use my PS2 for some games).

I actually wanted to ask GAF this question, has anyone known someone who had a 360 never succumb to the RROD?

Everybody I know who owns a 360 (a lot), views on RROD fixes on YouTube, the fact anybody who knows about the 360 knows about the RROD, etc, leads me to believe the Xbox 360, especially the first generation, had a extremely high failure rate.

Wow, you're very lucky original poster. My console failures:
  • Two first-gen Playstations (well-known design issue with cd laser track wearing out)
  • A launch Saturn (well-known issue with one of the video coprocessors overheating)
  • A Dreamcast (well-known issue with optical drive laser failing)
  • Three Xbox's (well-known issue with optical drive motor failing)
  • Three Xbox 360's (well-known RRoD issue with failed chip solder)
  • Not a console, but I've had numerous PC GPUs fail over the last 15 years, even though I had and have good chassic cooling and keep them clean

I take really good care of my stuff too-- they're in well ventillated places and not exposed to lots of vibration or anything. But note that all of them were due to engineering problems with the hardware. Again OP, you're very lucky.

I've been pretty lucky and only had one console stop working and that was my Dreamcast. It spent most of it's last days sideways because for some reason things worked that way. The biggest surprise is that my OG green screen Gameboy still works flawlessly, 20 years and still going strong, and that thing got punished hard over the years..

Out of last gen, the only console I had that died on me was the Wii. I had to send it in to Nintendo to get it fixed, and in the process lost my 242 star save in Super Mario Galaxy.

Amusingly, I had a launch Xbox 360 and a launch PS3 (20 GB w/ BC), and they're both still humming along (although the 360's disc drive doesn't read discs as reliably as it used to).
