And this is assuming that FFXV is reasonably well-received despite being an Action RPG with solid sales number.
Chances are, I believe Square Enix wouldn't stop experimenting with its series combat design, alternating between pseudo turn-based/ATB like FFXII and FFXIII, and full fledged action like FFXV.
Do you desire a complete return to pure turn-based like FFI-III and FFX? ATB like FFIV to IX? ATB with tweaks like X-2, XII, XIII series? Refinement of XV's combat system, thus retaining the real-time battle but with greater depths and changes?
For me, while I'm excited about XV's combat, I would like them to evolve XII's seamless ATB, with improved Gambit (it has buttload of potential, seriously) and so on. The enemy A.I. has to be vastly improved, and straight up use a job system that's flexible like V, Tactics and Bravely Default which allows deeper characterization and customization prospect for combat.
Please do NOT use this thread to voice how much you think Toriyama and Nomura destroy FF series, but rather, share your honest thoughts and opinions on what Square should do with FFXVI's combat system.
I actually liked X's battle system the best. I like the planning aspect of it. Even X-2 had something going for it with the job switching. But I don't mind the ATB except when it's really slow, like in 4
The trouble with 12 is that gambits made it so you didn't even need to do anything other than use 1 thumb to move around and let the game play for you, it's not that deep using them, but it is when you don't because it requires way more thought and quick reactionsMy fav system was FFXII obviously, but i'd say it doesn't matter, action/turn based, as long as the system behind it is deep and interesting.
Personally, I think they should. I miss planning how to defeat certain bosses and watching crazy looking limit breaks, spells or summons.
I was talking to my friends who are really casual gamers but ones that used to play Final Fantasy and it was interesting to hear their opinion as to how Square Enix should treat Final Fantasy. It basically boiled down to them saying go back to turn based, mature story and get rid of the grinding. A lot of them hate grinding levels because they just don't have the time to dedicate to play FF the same way they used to.

I would like to see that personally, but I highly doubt they will.
If they can create a feedback loop of praise for the ARPG battle system with KH and FFXV I wouldn't be surprised to see more of that (in XV's sequels no doubt).
With the way Square Enix is going, they're probably making Tomb Raider games to prepare for Final Fantasy XVI, which will have a cover-based TPS battle sysrtem. If the brand survives long enough, FFXVII will be a FPS. On the iPad 9.
