Have to give my thanks to the OP myself. Did try today to get the Zelda bundle from Target but with no luck. Getting lucky on checking GAF out at the right time is a nice consolation. Kinda prefer having blue to the Zelda version anyway. No game (and one game I wanted the system for), but eh, still a good deal.
Bit of a wait compared to what I'm used to from Amazon Prime for shipping, but I don't mind, got some other games I can play and stuff to do as well. But again, thanks!

Man, I just pulled the trigger on a Vita today because I didn't want to miss out on the OLED version but this is REALLY tempting. Can I justify a PS4, Vita, and 3DS all within a couple weeks? Decisions, decisions.

As soon as this topic was made I snagged a black one...There were just over 3000 sold then.
And... I pulled the trigger.
As soon as I clicked confirm and pay an error occurred saying it's sold out. FML.

Can anyone who got the black one confirm what color the item is on the picture they received in the confirmation email? I could have sworn I ordered a black one, but the picture in my email is blue and it doesn't explicitly state which color I got. It's not the end of the world if I got blue, just curious.
It's a question of profitability. Nintendo doesn't have the capability that Sony does when it comes to manufacturing, even though both employ Chinese manufacturers now.I was shocked that they considered selling the 3DS at $250 from the start! I wonder if they'll design their next hardware with a palatable price in mind rather than having to do drop after drop.
They need to maintain profit margins otherwise no real point, especially since mobile and tablets have eaten into the handheld market. You cannot deny, unlike a console, where little timmy was playing Mario Kart or Super Mario, he now also plays Clash of Clans or Candy Crush or Angry Birds.
Nintendo's biggest problem was again, a gimmick that they themselves dropped from a revision. The 3S technology and screen. They also spend the most on developing games and making sure they are amazing.
At $149.99 the 3DS XL is a great deal, but for Nintendo it represents a near $50+ loss on every one sold too. Obviously newer owners will buy more games to offset this. But there was no way Nintendo could have launched this at $149 from the start. Remember, smartphones are only cheap because they are typically carrier subsidized.
As for their next handheld, I hope a more traditional return to form is found. One that evokes the original Game Boy, while taking note of the Game Boy Advance and Micro. A nice large 5" AMOLED touch screen, dual analogs and triggers, at least 16gb built in flash and expandable memory. Basically, what the Vita is, with the care that Nintendo gives it's handheld.

Ah, I forgot about the necessity of taking a loss on hardware in order to get prices to an acceptable level. Though it's funny how with the 2DS, it's cheaper to make a giant single touchscreen (albeit without 3D) so perhaps that will be what's next (are 3D touchscreens possible?) Recently, there was a thread that said Nintendo bought shares of the company PUX which specializes in voice/image recognition so that could be a hint at what comes next!It's a question of profitability. But in any case, I didn't buy a 3DS until this year when I could get an XL for $170 so at least I hope the next handheld is priced less than the $200 psychological barrier, barring some sort of "wonderful innovation" that would warrant a higher price.
And to those who are buying 3DS XL's this Black Friday, please look at the entire library of the console, game consoles give you access to all the games available on them so don't treat it like a Nintendo first party machine only!
