I'm trying to make space on my AV unit for my incoming PS4 and am out of HDMI inputs so I picked up a component cable for the WiiU.
It will only let me set a resolution of 720P or the screen is blank.
It's been ages since I used a component connection, is this restriction from the WiiU or something to do with my TV (which does 1080P through HDMI)?
thx

Pretty sure component is 720p or 1080i.
It helps to mention what TV you have. Without the model number, we can't really say one way or another.

not all TVs would allow 1080p over component. No idea what model you have or how common it is now, since no one really ever asks that any more, but it was technically possible. The xbox 360 did it.
OP: it's your TV.Some HDTV's accept 1080p through HDMI but not Component.
I was able to get 1080p through my girlfriend's Samsung tv with component cables Wednesday night.
You could always just buy a HDMI switch.
Thanks for the information
TV is a Panasonic TC-P42U2 42-Inch
I'll live with the 720P for now and go back to HDMI when I eventually trade in my PS3

You could buy a HDMI splitter. Or... actually get up and manually switch the HDMI cables. Might not be so easy on the TV end, but just take the cable from the PS3 and put it in the Wii U.
1080P though component looks worse than HDMI does for some reason with the Wii U.
The Wii U can do it, sounds like your TV unfortunately can't. You'll have the same problem with any other HD devices through component so I wouldn't bother wasting money on that... an HDMI switcher is definitely your best option.
SMH.PS3 could do it through component. I'm sure Wii u definitely won't do it.
Wii U does 1080p through component! I tested it and it works.
BUT i would highly recommend a HDMI cable. The image quality through HDMI is alot better!

Yeah, if anything, I'd move the PS3 to component. There will be less games doing native 1080p or even 720p for the PS3 over the Wii U.Originally Posted by ColdBlooder

When Zelda Wii U comes out, that game will be 1080p/60 frames per second....
thanks again, if the image drives me crazy I will for the HDMI switch route. I can't see still having my PS3 in 6 months from now so I'll just put it in that spot ; )
Even if it does work from the WiiU, there is no guarantee your TV will support it. Most max out at 1080i over component.
