The story, hands down. Not a lot of JRPGs have the same scope anymore and it builds itself in the same way games like 999/VLR do where the story is told in layers and pays off with twist after twist in rapid succession in the end game. Y'know, I've never played Xenogears -- I never ponied up the money for it when it came out and I've never been a fan of mechs, so I've never picked it up to playthrough after the fact. I've thought about it though... why do you like it so much?
The one big caveat though is its gameplay hasn't aged well and has a very slow text speed. While I've seen some people able to stomach it and enjoy the whole package years later I've only been able to play through it once (7 or 8 years ago). I fail every time I try to replay it and just watch other people LP it instead now.
