Who else loves spelunky?
That's not to say I'm very good, I've played about 5 hours of it and only made it to the jungle 3 times. Spelunky is awesome though.
Though I've been slacking on my progress to beat Hell. Only got there once.
The death/restart cycle is so tight & so fast to recover, it removes the fear of failure. Sure you're still gutted when your run gets cut short & you have to re-start, but literally 2 seconds later you're back in with a fresh world. No unskippable cutscenes, no plot BS, no "I'd better stop now as I don't have time to reach the next checkpoint", no wedged in new game mechanic or shitty area that frustrates you, just game rules you pick up in 5 seconds and how you move around. It's a beautiful, beautiful game.
The sheer amount of constant pressure your under negates the actual pressure compared to other games. I don't want to die in Bioshock Infinate (for example) and then have to do 15 minutes of progress again to reach the same part, and then maybe fuck it up again.
Only just got into it a short while ago, I was loving the trial but when they added the fix and daily challenges I had to get it.
I've never ever been a fan of caves in games so it took a good vita trial for me to take the plunge despite all the good impressions. And it's still mostly caves, but damn is it fun. Awesome platforming mechanics are so solid and have a lot of depth to them. You feel really helpless at first, lasting for only short distances but you get better. And you get further despite each playthrough being completely different to the last, even if also familiar. So many neat aspects and things you could run into and discover as well (saw a bunch on part of a video - something called an eggplant run - spoiler warning, I guess, it's an article with the video though). Still have a long way to go. I usually make it to near the end of the jungle on a good run now.
Anyway, today's daily run started off so well to end in an epic fail for me, right after I bought some items. Still suck, but slowly getting better. I feel like I'm cheating by using the tunnels...especially when using the tunnels to unlock more tunnels. Too much practice without working for it if you know what I mean. Still not stopping me, want to accelerate my learning for sure.
Send me an invite on steam if you're looking for some competition on the daily leaderboards.

The final final final boss is crazy stressful, even when I got a perfect game going (jetpack).
Excellent game. I want a sequel.
My 9 year old niece absolutely LOVES it too. We beat the regular boss in co op a few days ago for the first time, we had only made it there together once before. She didnt make it to the boss level herself (died in last stage of the Temple) but was sooo nervous watching me play it and was super goddamn impressed when I beat it. It was kinda adorable. :D
She is starting to get better at it too. She can make it to the jungles alone quite often and brags to me if I am not around to see it. I love this game. :D :D
Once you get better you go through the levels quicker, don't need to take your time as much, adds a lot to it I think. I've seen it's even possible to learn the ghost's movement patterns, he's pretty slow - although I tried it myself today and didn't last long. You can even kill him (very slowly) in the lava stage.A million times this.
I was excited to finally try Spelunky, but the ghost ruins it for me. I hate being rushed through the level. RL on the other hand is perfection.
Spelunky would be a great pick indeed. I was actually thinking about that a few weeks back before I got into Spelunky and I couldn't pick but I was leaning towards LBP on Vita.Originally Posted by The Illiterati
I love Spelunky. I'm pretty sure it's the perfect game. I played tons of it on 360 but still never beat it, personally my best achievement was unlocking the temple shortcut. I bought it also for vita and pc, but really haven't played too much since, since I have too many other games. My wife also loves it, though she's not that good. If I was to choose one game for a desert island it would be Spelunky. Even though I'm not that great at it my respect for it is limitless.
edit: Just want to add that it's a great co-op game for kids too. I love playing it with my 4 y. boy as I can pick him up on the hardest jumps and then keep going at it. It's really a great experience.
I don't even know what would be in the sequel. It's hard to live up to the originalOriginally Posted by theMrCravens
I must've entered HELL over 10 times since 360 launch, and never beat it yet.

Me and my daughter play the crap outa this game(she's only three) and she's actually great at it for her age. Only problem is she has erased my game twice now after unlocking all the tunnels and beating the big head orlec? anyways not sure if im ready for a third run.
Ok. We will hijack this thread! hehehe My boy always wants to wait for the ghost right to the last second near the exit and then leave. He always laughs hysterically at this.Originally Posted by HamsterPackage
Right on brother! its rather cute how she makes sure we save the "puppie" or the "girl" depending what its set on. And she calls the ghost the monster.
Bananasaurus Rex is the best Spelunky player to watch. He even solo'd an eggplant run the other night (on top of killing the ghost legitimately).
I mean, I'm never going to see any of the alternate levels or endings.
It's simple. Kill the Ghost.A million times this.

I also have the 360 version but I also have a PS3 and just bought a Vita. Been thinking about double dipping for the sweet portable action and the daily challenge. I was kind of hoping for a sale during BF or Xmas. I have $20 just sitting in my PSN wallet.I played a lot of this on the 360 and recently got the vita version and I put in a few tries daily. Amazing game. Love it. We should get a thread up to discuss the daily challenges. The OT seems pretty dead.
Who else loves spelunky?
If more and more GAFers are jumping in, I might too....
I truly believe this is one of the greatest video games ever made. It's just so ... video games.
Still haven't gotten to Hell. been so close a couple of times...
Once I Platinum Tearaway I'll be going back to this pretty much full-time. Only a new Vita game in my Christmas stocking can save me!
