In the 20 years I've been actively playing games, I can say Spelunky is up there as one of my favourites. Sounds super hyperbolic I know, but I really think it's that damn good, in terms of a perfect balance of game mechanics.

I liked the free version but didn't put a lot of time into it because I planned to buy the Steam version on a good sale. Finally bought it on the flash deal a couple days ago and am really enjoying it so far.

Between Spelunky and Awesomenauts, I have a hard time finding time for other games. (I still find it though, since Zelda and Mario are great too.)

You ever feel like the level generator is f*cking with you?

I'm bringing the key down to the ice level for the shortcut unlock I had a great run and then when i got the jungle the game threw two beehives at me back to back. I actually killed the queen both times. Problem is I ran out of bombs. The next level had so many tiki men and I died off of a bad jump.

Damnit.

Played at least 60 hours of it on 360, and a lesser amount on both PS3 and Vita.

The death/restart cycle is so tight & so fast to recover, it removes the fear of failure. Sure you're still gutted when your run gets cut short & you have to re-start, but literally 2 seconds later you're back in with a fresh world. No unskippable cutscenes, no plot BS, no "I'd better stop now as I don't have time to reach the next checkpoint", no wedged in new game mechanic or shitty area that frustrates you, just game rules you pick up in 5 seconds and how you move around. It's a beautiful, beautiful game.

The sheer amount of constant pressure your under negates the actual pressure compared to other games. I don't want to die in Bioshock Infinate (for example) and then have to do 15 minutes of progress again to reach the same part, and then maybe fuck it up again.

I'm at the point where I kill shopkeepers on every run, having a shotgun makes the things much more enjoyable. Typically I wait until I get the Udjat Eye but if they have a bomb box or a JetPack I don't wait to start the murdering spree!

They're huge dicks. I've incurred the wrath of a shoopkeeper by blowing up a wall that was pretty far away from him.

The pressure of the ghost and the risk/reward of using the ghost to increase score by letting it turn gems in to diamonds is part of the fun for me. It adds an extra level of excitement and variety to the game.

Rogue Legacy gating progress and rewarding death bothers me. I really don't like that they just increase enemy damage and health as an artificial roadblock in that game. It's an exercise in frustration surviving through to a boss and doing tiny damage over a long time just because you got there without dying to cash in the money you have earned to upgrade enough to make it less tedious. I do not think it is anywhere near as smartly designed as Spelunky. To me the core idea behind it is flawed and discourages trying to learn the game and playing it at a high level.

I thought it was neat having a ghost there to push you to make better decisions, that it turn the gems is just sweet. So much variety to the difficulty, everyone has their own adventure, and a different one as they get better. Really good reward and very well designed, agree with Bleep on that.

They are on you so fast it requires having reflexes like after playing hotline miami. So full on with rage. Worst thing is how they are waiting for you at the exit each time too. Not quite worth the stress for me yet.

You can kill shopkeepers every time with just the whip if you learn how, here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9kcLQKRiB8

If you are going for score it's something that's incredibly valuable to learn due to the resources you gain for free.

I kill shopkeepers every run. It's mostly just because I've gotten so used to killing them in the daily challenges. No way I'm shelling out $50,000 for the Ankh to get to Hell. I definitely don't think you should be bothering shopkeepers if you're fairly new to the game, though. Heck, I personally wouldn't recommend anybody do it until they've at least beaten Olmec, as by then you'll at least have a solid grasp on how most things work in the game.

Hah, I've beaten Olmec and still have a long way to go before I get to that level of confidence. Occasionally if things aren't going well, I continue a "fuck it" run, trying my luck with killing shopkeepers.
Are there any shop(keeper)s in Hell? If not, then that might give me a bit more incentive to go homicidal more often.

This doesn't work, inside of the moai is considered solid by the game until you use the ankh, so if you try to teleport in you will die.

I bought this a few months ago, and never made it past the tutorial. This thread convinced me to give it another try, and I'm really enjoying it so far. I haven't made it past the mines yet, but I don't find the deaths too frustrating. Fast fun. I can only imagine how nice it would be to have the Vita version.

I discovered the game thanks to the PC and Vita versions. Played it almost daily back in October but had to cool it down a little because it kept me from playing anything else. It's amazing how very time you think you've seen it all, the game throws something new at you. I recently started ghost running, for instance.

Put a good amount of time in the 360 version, but was never able to defeat Olmec. On the Vita I've beaten Olmec three times and I've gotten to hell (and died almost immediately).
Does it matter for anybody which character they use? I've gotten my best runs on the little ninja guy, while with other characters I don't even make it out of the mines.

What's so interesting about the daily challenges? Is it scoring against other people?

You know, if Spelunky wasn't Derek Yu's lifework (when discussing his gaming career) that he finetuned over many years, I'd so ask for a large-scale expansion akin to what was done to The Binding of Isaac.

Got me hookes on the 360 and even though it's so hard to the point that I nearly broke my pad on several occasions it's also really rewarding and it never gets old. Every death happens because of your own inability or greed and it never felt unfair, just really really hard. After I managed to beat the boss at the end of stage four and after unlocking a few special characters I stopped playing it though. But it actually never gets old thanks to the random levels. Everyone with a bit of old fashiones game grit should give it a try.

Now I want to play it again.

I don't get the ghost complaints. The levels aren't even big in the first place, rarely do you acquire enough resources to literally explore everything in all the worlds and I have to wonder just how slow one has to go through through the game (like, exclusively walk?) for the ghost to even become a legitimate problem every time. The way I see it, the ghost is moreso a soft-handicap that Derek Yu included to mess with the player's mind and I'm all for that. Granted, there are instances where the ghost does pose a real threat when there are too many beneficial considerations or tough calls to take into account (read: if the stakes are high), but it adds to the tensity rather than detract from it since it can be kited with minimal planning. The existence of the ghost is very much designed to synergize with the game's other mechanics and three minutes is usually more than enough to pillage most of a stage's valuables.

And Rogue Legacy is the exact opposite of Spelunky, which is fine. I understand why it appeals to some people, but for me personally it has far too many misguided design choices to view it as anything but a shallow experience.

Try doing no-gold runs and consistently running into darkness stages. Can't use the torch because the stationary ones drop gold nuggets when lit (thus drastically limiting your vision), very real chance of spiders big or small dropping on your head in the caves and you can't even see (in advance I mean) whether you're about to run over a piece of gold either. It's even worse if it triggers in the jungle.

This usually happens to me when things are looking up or start well, but perhaps I'm being selective with my memory. To add insult to injury, it's the only achievement I have left.

End-game spoiler: I laugh every time at the notion that shopkeepers follow you straight into HELL in their quest to make you pay for your crimes.

It may appear that way initially, but once you have more experience you'll notice that those 'dumb luck' moments are exception cases.
