http://www.gamerevolution.com/news/r...business-22865Former THQ president Jason Rubin recently discussed Nintendo's current state as a hardware maker, saying that the company is essentially "irrelevant" in the console space.
Speaking on the latest episode of GameTrailers' Bonus Round, Rubin said flat out that "Nintendo is irrelevant as a hardware manufacturer in the console business." However, that isn't to say that he doesn't believe there is a lot of value at Nintendo, it's just found in the software.
He then went on to say how the company is a "worldwide treasure," adding that "it is a crime that we do not play those games on the systems that we have."
Do you agree with the former THQ exec? Is it time that Nintendo focuses on what it does best and delivers its software across a plethora of gaming devices? Let us know in the comments below.
3DS mate // whoever smelt it dealt it.
From the CEO of the now defunct THQ
Says the guy from the bankrupt company, not that I completely disagree with him.
D00med!!!!111
The three first words of the article is as far as people should read.
He's not really wrong.
THQ calling out another company over being irrelevant? Lol
He's not entirely wrong but lol at this coming from an ex-THQ guy.
THQ? More like THQQ am I rite?
Didn't he spend his career making platform exclusive games?
He's right about Wii U.
... is this port begging?
Yeah, the wii was a massive flop.
This is one of this two constant lines he's always spouting in these videos. The other is how everything should be on tablets/phones.
That was 1 console. They've failed in the other three 3D generations.Originally Posted by mf luder

THQ being entirely his fault and the only contribution he has ever made to gaming.Originally Posted by Justagamer80

The merits of the article can be debated without ad hominems, I think.
rubin trashing up the joint
You guys know Rubin took over THQ when it was already well into its death spiral right?
Obviously not.

No, I'd rather they disappear than go third party. It would probably end up destroying them, much like Sega.
Is THQ still relevant in the game business?
This is effectively an article about the Bonus Rounds he has been a part of as of late.
He wants to play Nintendo software but refuses to buy Nintendo hardware to do it. Well, good luck on that one unless you use emulators. His argument is pretty much "Nintendo should go third party because then they'll have their good games on better systems," which might sound like a good idea, until you realize that there would be many things Nintendo would not be capable of doing on other platforms that they do on their own. If you think Nintendo would go much more forward with their franchises and IPs *after* losing hardware development, you are sorely mistaken. They'd likely focus on their main IPs even more, and we don't want yearly NSMB games, do we?

Is the same episode where they suggest Nintendo should go third party to become the equivalent of Disney and bring up Nintendo theme parks?
"What Nintendo does best" is making software for their hardware. These "treasured" games that he talks about would not exist without Nintendo hardware. And considering that Nintendo is consistently innovating on the hardware level, the true crime would be losing their influence on it.
It's very simple, Rubin. Want to play Nintendo software? Buy Nintendo hardware. Just as it's always been.

He's right, when you look at WiiU worldwide sales. The system has...underperformed to put it lightly. And I think the bigger point is that Nintendo is completely separate from the rest of the industry. The biggest franchises in gaming, specifically GTA/CoD/etc, either don't come to Nintendo products or are complete non-factors on them.
We can laugh at his title or point out the irony, but at the end of the day Nintendo is struggling in the hardware market.

Who knows, they might capture lightning in a bottle again sometime. But as a console manufacturer that can stand toe-to-toe with their competition, he's right.
Nintendo did more than misread the current generation. They created one of the worst selling consoles of all time from a major player, and seem completely clueless as to how to fix it.Originally Posted by SolidSnakex
Based on one platform? They created the best selling console of the last generation while they misread the current generation. That doesn't make them irrelevant.
Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Nintendo stumbled with the Wii U for sure but they aren't going anywhere anytime soon.
He reminds me of that one uncle or grandparent we all probably know in our lives who talks about the same issues and topics over, and over, and over.Originally Posted by Derrick01

Well. Kinda. The only selling point of Nintendo's hardware at this point is its own software.
How many people have co-founded Naughty Dog?
The list seems to be growing every year.
