This is not a thread to compare consoles, but to give our impressions on our experience with the new hardware, i know WiiU is a next gen console too but that has been available for a year now, this is meant to discuss only the newest kids in the block.
The good, the bad and the ugly.
PS4 owner here, so far i have to say i'm happy with the console, loving the simple and minimalist interface but i really want to be able to change the background, that's all i ask.
The controller was a little uncomfortable for my thumbs the first day but it's ok now, i guess i was used to putting my thumbs a certain way on the DS3 and i had to reposition them to adjust to the new thumbsticks. I have to say the Bluray support has been disapointing tho, tried to play two movies(Cars, Kunf Fu Panda 2) over the weekend and none worked, what's up with that?
I have to say hardware and interface wise the console has met my expectations so far, really good overall.
In terms of the actual games, as a graphics whore so far only Killzone has wowed me graphically, such a good looking game, also Knack for some reason has impressed me, some chapters have been really pretty, i think the setting has a lot to do with it, love the nature colours in those forest and caves as well as some of the insect/animal enemies.
The launch line up as a hole i think is really good. I know most are cross platform titles but i was sick and tired of sub HD games and jaggies galore on my 55" TV. My most played game surprisingly has been Knack, playing co op with my son and seeing his face when knack transforms from regular knack to ice, wood, fire has been great and the way the co op is set up is brilliant, allowing me to play with my son and be challenging for me and not furstrating for him at the same time is great. Kudos to Cerny and his team.
I'm ok with the next batch of games coming next year, i don't usually get many games every month and now i have FIFA, COD, Battlefield, Knack, NBA 2k and Killzone to keep me busy till the next batch of games start coming.
Really happy with my shiny new console so far.

Im in love
with my ps4
Never thought it would run so smoothly
Im just starting to worry about how many games that i thought would release in the first half of 2014 seem to be moving to fall 2014
I really thought publishers had finally learned to stop releasing everything in the fall

PS4 OS is responsive and smooth. Exactly what I was hoping for.
Resogun was a fun timesink and I enjoyed playing it through on normal, but I don't see myself ever playing it again.
Killzone bores me to tears. So does AC4.
So I guess i'll just...wait for infamous to come out.

PS4:
Beat KZ, sold it for more than I paid, beat BF4 sold it for more than I paid, beat COD Ghosts, sold it for more than I paid.
I love NBA 2k14. Games are okay, but nothing has felt next gen yet.

generally I am enjoying the PS4.
I absolutely hate the lack of triangle button action for the OS like on ps3 though.

Apart from the occasional annoying bug, it's been awesome.
I really like my ps4....when it doesn't crash. Pretty sure I got one that's clearly messed up. Love playing BF4, Resogun and Warframe though. I can't even put it in sleep mode, it will crash and have to boot up into safe mode.
Excellent so far. The launch games have kept me busy and have been a ton of fun.
The instant switching and media controls built into the X1 are amazing in person. It sold two friends on the system.
I don't really notice the differences in the X1 controller, outside of the pad. It's 1000x better for simple usage.
Haven't played a PC game since last week. Very unusual for me.

PS4 is hot but lacks games right now for me. Controller is great, OS is more than acceptable.
Xbox is also pretty hot but has some annoying OS/UI problems. Games are good but graphical fidelity is an issue with the 720p games. I'd say I'm spending a lot more time on it because of past xbox live friends.

The PS4 system is amazing. My wife and I have been playing lots of games together and she has taken kindly to the world of the Creed of the Assassins. My joys have been found in the 60fps goodness of BF4.
The jump to Next Gen (now current gen) is so big compared to PS3 and 360 that I only want to play games on PS4 now.

PS4 is a simple system. Itt does what it set out to do well, and besides experiencing some connection issues with Battlefield 4 I haven't had a single issue.
Hopefully the system will get a must have game in the next year.

Xbone:
Very happy overall with the purchase. Didn't expect to like the Kinect but I've become fond of talking to myself. The controller is fast approaching GOAT territory. The UI is a big step back from the 360 and a lot of features such as data management, controller battery life, etc are curiously absent.
My games are Ryse, Dead Rising 3, and Battlefield 4. Ryse is absolutely next gen visually and I look forward to playing a more competent game with such brilliant eye candy going forward. Dead Rising is the most fun game of the lot but its barely a step up technically from last gen. Battlefield looks great and feels buttery smooth to play unlike a lot of shooters from before but its in dire need of a patch to fix the crashes.
The PS4 is obviously pushing a bit more horsepower under the hood but I went with the system that'll have the exclusives I'm most interested in. Overall, I'm pleased with my decision, but there are big opportunities for improvement.

I am already bored of both...
I had a lot more fun with the ps4. I bought my multi plats on ps4. The micro transactions really left a bad anti consumer taste on xbox one....
I might actually give knack a chance this week. I already gave ryse and crimson dragon one.

Very happy with my PS4. Played a ton of Resogun, BF4, and AC4 over the long Thanksgiving weekend.
Had the chance to play Forza 5 and Dead Rising 3 over Thanksgiving on my brother's Xbox One. Forza was pretty decent, I could sink some hours into that. Dead Rising 3 seems like some dumb fun but aside from close up shots of some characters looking decent you could have totally fooled me into thinking it was playing on a PS360. I didn't spend any time really thinking about the controller (which is a good thing, it's comfy) but I did notice while playing Forza the trigger feedback. It wasn't quite what I was expecting but it works really nice.
Didn't spend a ton of time with the Xbox One UI but it's (obviously) like Windows 8 which I'm just not a fan of. There is too much going on in each square that isn't set by me so it isn't consistent. I feel like the menu is always new and I'm hunting for what I want.
Voice commands might have well been simply disabled. I never once was able to get it to record anything I did in Forza. It worked for a couple of "go home" or "go to" type things but that was spotty for me and my brother.
We ended the night using netflix and while the integration is great, it sucked getting interrupted constantly by "<gamertag> wants to play" or "has signed on" or whatever. Probably an option somewhere to disable those notifications so I can't really fault it too much.
Overall I didn't really get enough time with it to really have a solid opinion but my first and immediate impression is that I could probable live without it. The machine itself looks decent if kinda big and it was quiet. The controller is great. Kinect is huge as is the cable for it.

Very happy with it, just annoyed that my hdd died last night due to power outage and now I gotta get it fixed ;[
UI/Controller are awesome and really great improvements over the PS3.
Otherwise, gimme the first patch for 2K already, come on!! :O

PS4 - Pretty happy with it. The free games at the moment are the real highlight. Sour note is BF4 but that's not console specific.
Happy with the controller except the left thumbstick feels a little too slippy.
PSVita remote play is freaking awesome.
DLNA is a massive miss and makes me sad though.

Wii U
I love the tv remote and playing LoZ: The Wind Waker again.
I love the tv remote and playing LoZ: The Wind Waker again.
Xbox UI is a mess, chat doesn't work so I've had to use Skype, and most of the games look terrible (crushed blacks everywhere). Ryse is very impressive though, I wish I had played it first, BF4 and Killer Instinct really soured my initial impressions of next gen gaming. Controller is fantastic, Kinect is stupid.
PS4 I have only really played BF4, it looks a lot better than the Xbox version on my TV, but I have a lot more issues just getting a game. Controller triggers are too small and the thumbpad material feels bad, but it's a massive improvement over the DS3.

It opens up a lot more after the first few hours. Interesting opinion on Edward, I found his cheekiness and smart allec demeanor refreshing. Probably the best protagonist in the series for me.Does it get better after the first few hours? I find the main character really boring.
I've really been enjoying my PS4 so far. Once I realized I didn't like Killzone, I've been spending my time enjoying ACIV and Lego Marvel. Remote Play is great and is a killer feature for me personally.
I love the OS as well. In a sense it's more of the same from PS3 but better and it's so fast and responsive.

PS4.
+Controller feels great. Triggers and sticks work just as reported all these months.
+Blu-Ray playback has been great.
+Loving the instant switching back and fourth between apps and games with no loading or lag.
+Video playback of games feature is cool. I have no idea how to take a photo or when gameplay is recording but I haven't dived in too far yet. I see photos up so there is a way. I have no tried to stream or upload any content.
+The PS4 is quiet.
+The touch pad is a cool idea so far in KZ: Shadowfall. We'll see how far it goes.
+Friend's list and store is set up aight. I can work with it.
-It took a while to get used to where the option button sits and it's very flush with the rest of the controller.
-The battery life is too short.

Enjoying the XB1, but like all console launches, it could use a few patches to get it into shape.
I'm particularly enjoying the drivatars in Forza, Dead Rising 3, and Powerstar (crack) Golf.
And being able to say "Watch TV."

Absolutely love my PS4 but the controller battery life is abysmal.
I have both, and while the PS4 will likely be my main gaming console going forward I've found my time being spent mostly with my Xbone right now. With Dead Rising, Forza, Ryse, Killer Instinct and Xbox Fitness it's just been eating up a lot of my time.
I've been playing AC4 on the PS4 which has been a delight. The game looks great and I love the DS4.
Also, the suspend/resume feature of the Xbox is AWESOME. Can't wait until both consoles have this feature.

Not sure why you're leaving out Wii U out of this, yes it's old, but a lot of people, and gaffers are picking them up now.
So why can't they comment on it as well?

Been playing AC4. Friend messages me, I go to the XMB. Works instantly. Chat a bit with a friend, look at my friends list etc etc
Return to the game in less than a second, feelsgoodman.

PS4 is everything I thought it would be with plenty of room for improvement.
WiiU is at the father in laws and that's ok but they don't care about it all that much these days.

I'm in a rather odd situation. I already own a PS4... but I haven't been able to play games, not even see the console. I bought it back home but I'm abroad for the moment... I can skype with a friend who picked it up for me and see it through my laptop. So I would say, my experience has been 'digital only'. Dat DRM...
My PS4 very rarely crashes for some reason (have to hard reset, goes to a black screen) and also occasionally has picture issues. The screen will start .... flickering? A white static / snow will flash on 1/4 or 1/3 or even full screen occasionally for literally only one frame.
It's jarring. I think I should return it, but in a wheelchair so it's not easy to do, have to have a friend help if I do. Trying to investigate and see if I should. Any thoughts?
BF4 is fantastic now that I crash only once every 3-4 hours. Epic gameplay.
I am liking the dual shock 4 a lot. That's good as I've despised every prior dual shock.
**
Xbox One has been extremely smooth and no disc drive issues. I am finding I really dig the voice commands a lot. They work well for me. I've only played Killer Instinct, though, and not anything else. Been using the apps like Twitch a lot.
I hope MS finds enough success for the XB1 as I enjoy both.

I am amazed at how fast the fluid the PS4 UI is. I never thought Sony had it in them to create a quality OS/UI. So easy to switch back and forth between a game and other actions. Just picked up ACIV yesterday and so far it's really good. Still need to beat KZ and play more multiplayer. Only complaint I have so far is there are some bugs and the battery life on the controller is a bit short. Luckily I sit pretty close and have no problem leaving it plugged in when it runs low.
Loving my PS4.
Problem is being a huge fan of racing games, there's only NFS Rivals which I might just have to get now, but besides my thirst for a good racing game everything else is fantastic.

Since i got my PS4, i can't complain much, the system is fucking amazing !!!!
- OS is super fast.
- UI is simple, maybe too simple.
- I love the games, Killzone SF, Knack, NFS Rivals, Resogun and COD Ghost in 1080p.
- Party chat works flawlessly for me, online has been great for me, PSN is fast.
- Controller is probably the best i have used, perfect for shooters, better than the XOne controller imo. I like the headphone jack and the speakers, really makes a difference for me.
- PS4 camera is amazing with Playroom and i can't wait to see more stuff supported with the Cam.
All in all, i'm very happy with my purchase. I can't wait to play more games on it like Drive Club and Infamous.

Enjoying PS4. AC4 is a great launch title, I don't remember any previous launch console PS1, PS2, or PS3 having a game with so much freedom. I'm also enjoying BF4 after it's recent patch. 64 player games are finally working and I'm having a blast.
As for Xbox One. Its just a expensive blu-ray video player so far. I barely use it.

Friend come to visit me. He plays on my computer hooked to my tv, no problem, I boot up my vita and the PS4 via remote and sail the sea in AC IV all day. Next gen
One does not simply beat BF4!PS4:
Beat KZ, sold it for more than I paid, beat BF4 sold it for more than I paid, beat COD Ghosts, sold it for more than I paid.
I love NBA 2k14. Games are okay, but nothing has felt next gen yet.
Are you crazy? The game IS the multiplayer...
I have enjoyed both and both had a pretty good launch (no shit storm). I have played far more hours on my Xbox One, but that is because of the launch games my friends and I got (Forza, Killer Instinct, Dead Rising, and Battlefield). Killzone's graphics are super nice, but all games have done things that are better than last-gen. I have seen a ton of Ryse videos, but I haven't played it yet. I've got plenty of time though, between now and Titanfall!
I really felt kind of lost at fist on the Xbox One dashboard and still wonder were some things are. The Kinect voice navigation works a lot better than I thought it would. Still misses things here and there but I'm only using it to control the dashboard (not switch TV channels).
The only technical issue I have is my Xbox One controller disconnects once in a while. I'm still trying to figure out if it's a software issue or a hardware issue.

I love the speed of the UI including the store which was a slow piece of crap on PS3. I wish it was a little more customizable though. I had a pretty sweet theme on PS3 that had some nicely done high quality 3d icons compared to the plain white flat ones the stock XMB comes with.It also included much improved navigation sounds so I hope Sony eventually allows the UI to be skinned and the background changed. Also, customizing the icons on the home screen would be welcome so that I can get rid of that Playroom, Music Unlimited and Movies Unlimited crap that I will never use.
Also wish the video apps could be rearranged so that only the ones I do have show up as I no longer have a Hulu or Amazon account and would prefer for Netflix and hopefully Youtube soon to be the default apps when I go to that section. Talking about missing apps, I hope they get some more since it would be nice to have the IGN, Machinima, Gametrailers, Gamestop, etc. apps that Xbox has so that I don't have to switch to my HTPC any time I want to watch some of their video content.
I've stupidly only been playing BF4 although I downloaded all of the "free" PS Plus games and have NBA2k14 and NFS. Game is currently a broken shitpiece but when it works it's pretty damn fun to be playing BF with my console bros at 60fps. Although the 900p is definitely noticeable since I still see a decent amount of jaggies and stuff just isn't as clear as the 1080p version of BF3 I played on PC. It would be pretty sweet if DICE patched in the rest of the Ps but knowing them they are probably behind fixing bugs and creating new ones. I'm still having a blast with it though and I need to try out some other games, especially the native 1080p ones. I'm currently playing ACIV on my PC and damn does it look and run good. With what I've seen of BF4 so far, even at 900p if all games are going to be around that level or better for this generation, I will be a happy man gaming on PS4 and PC.

Its ok. I am just waiting for some games.
The PS4 surpassed my expectations. I never thought that Sony could deliver such a simple, logically sound UI. Everything works very well. Transitions are fast and incredibly smooth. It's very refreshing knowing that this is the base in which Sony will improve on. So far so good. Of course it goes without saying how great the games look, especially Killzone. Videos and screens cam never do proper justice. Remote play is borderline perfect too. I'm very impressed.
The Xbox One isn't nearly as broken or incomplete as our insiders have made it out to be. It works. Very well, it's just missing some basic functionality that it's predecessor had. UI navigation can be cumbersome, but thanks to Kinect, it actually does what its supposed to do. The games look good but the darkening and sharpening filter really irks me a lot. Ryse looks insane, and isn't as boring or repetitive as people made it seem. Overall it's a good system and offers a fun and feature rich experience.
It goes without saying that I'm happy with both of my purchases :)

Resogun - Great game, would love it if they added free DLC. . . (heck I may even pay for DLC for this game) - Platinum + working on clearing the game on Master
Assasin's Creed BF - Fun, still in the early stages of the game. Once I have my ship (and free roaming) I believe the game really becomes fun.
Knack - Great game, especially with local co-op. Had a blast playing with my brother. Interesting how you can exploit the game by using player 2. Player one dieing ends the game, player 2 can die an unlimited? number of times.
Contrast - Fun game, pretty short though. Glitchy in some spots, but 99% of the time you can rush your way out of being stuck by hitting the button that shoots you forward. I thought it was pretty creative and interesting in its mechanics. I would like to see this blown up to a longer (10-15~) hour game. They would really need to find ways of making the gameplay/mechanics evolve over that time however.
Killzone - Sitting on the shelf currently. I have been meaning to start it, but there is no real rush. Plenty of months until Driveclub / Infamous.
OS is snappy as hell. Have yet to have the PS4 crash on me. Party chat works great. Just waiting on pulse headset support. Even the crappy included headset works well enough. Pretty impressed overall.

PS4
- The console itself is great. Nice, clean UI. The controller is fantastic, too.
- I've not finished it yet, but Killzone has been a massive disappointment in almost every way. Aside from the graphics, there is not much good I can say about it. Terrible level design, horrible story and voice acting, and boring weapons. The shooting is functional but nothing more.
- Resogun is fantastic. That's all I have to say.
Overall, I'm satisfied with my purchase, but I can't help but think that I should have waited until there are more exclusives available. After all, that is the reason why I bought the console. My PC is my multi-platform machine.

It's been solid fun so far. The launch hype wore off really fast for me on this one but I think it's because I'm older now, this is technically the first launch generation that I've been an adult so that sort of insane excitement I had for new consoles is gone now. But looking at it from an objective point of view it's one of the stronger launches from a game perspective that I've been a part of and with PS4 most of the stuff I need it to do it does it a million times faster than PS3. I feel like I should be more appreciative than I am about it.
edit: I still need to play Killzone. I have no idea why I'm putting that off so much.

No he's not, it's atrocious on every level. A strong contender for worst game of the year just like 3 was. What I can't figure out is why seemingly all of gaf loves a game that offers nothing of value to the player.Oh man, you are missing out. AC is fantastic.
Enjoying my Xbox One. Dead Rising 3 was a fin experience, though it got a bit tedious with missions seeming intent on making me drive from one end of the city to the other and back again. I was blown away by the amount of zombies on screen at any one time, have rarely felt so overwhelmed in a zombie game.
Killer Instinct is damn fantastic as well. Have pumped many hours into Survival, Dojo, local and online versus. One of my favourite fighters of recent times, though I'm really looking forward to a more diverse cast as more content is added.
Need for Speed Rivals is also damn good fun, when it works. It's super frustrating to need to wait 5 minutes to be able to start a game. Often the 'host' will disconnect forcing a host migration as well. It seems EA want to do their own thing and not use Microsoft's wealth of Live servers which is a shame.
It's a bit dodgy with voice commands as well. Super useful to be able to just say "GPS Repair" while in an intense pursuit rather than using the dpad to navigate a menu while you're driving at hundreds of km/h. It is super annoying that I can't play it while people are in the room with me though. So many times it has interpreted general conversation as "restart event" or "look around" which completely screws up my race.
Thinking that I'll return NFS Rivals after I've played a little more, it's super fun when it works but I am not sure that it will hold me, especially with these technical issues annoying me most times I try to play.

Things I love about the Xbox One:
1. Really fluid switching between games, apps and television.
2. Netflix looks better on the Xbox One than on the 360
3. Powerstar Golf (just hit my first Eagle yesterday!)
4. Voice commands ("Xbox Watch NFL Redzone")
5. I've never owned a bluray player and I'm digging it
6. The ease of set up literally blew my mind
7. Being able to use panicstream.com
8. Perfectly quiet - The 360 sucked in that regard.
Things I have liked about the Xbox One
1. I really like Ryse, it's a lot of fun.
2. Xbox Live hasn't been a mess.
3. 64 player Battlefield games
4. Upload Studio
Things that could use work with the Xbox One
1. Why in the hell did they remove the system setting to set inverted to default? WHY? (minor inconvenience but I haven't had to switch it in years)
2. Why is there such bad video support in Internet Explorer? I wanted to watch the webisodes for the Walking Dead last night and they wouldn't work - uber lame.
That's about it. I feel like there will be things I'm learning about this box for years.

PS4
-System is slick, the controller is much better than the DS3
-Interface is ok, still missing a lot of features and needs some work but it is a good start
-Only picked up Knack and Killzone and I am very disappointed in both
7/10 so far, unfortunately I feel it will be collecting dust until Infamous comes out
XB1
-Love the controller
-System is lighter than I expected
-Really enjoying Forza, Dead Rising, Ryse and Battlefield
-OS needs a lot of work but like the PS4 it is a good start
7.5/10 as I am enjoying the exclusives more than I do the PS4 ones
Overall next gen experience is 7/10. Both consoles were not ready for launch and needed another 3-6 months in the oven.
