For starters I'm not even a big FIFA fan (though I love football as much as gaming!). I haven't bought one since PS2. I occasionally play multiplayer round my friend's house though.

So I downloaded the PS4 demo thinking it wouldn't be much but the differences and improvements are strikingly noticeable from the PS3 version.

There's obviously exaggeration to show off the new tech: the way the shirts crease and the way the shirts wave about. But it's still cool to see. But in particular I was struck by the detail of the grass, the shininess and rotations of the ball and most of all, the way players bodies are positioned and move when they shoot. Par for the course are the player faces getting better and better. But that's something that isn't as striking as the aforementioned stuff.

I played a bit of PS3 FIFA 14 a few months back and immediately saw it was not too different from 13. But the next-gen really is next-gen. Credit to EA on this. They may mess about with legacy editions and such nonsense on other platforms, but they've actually made an effort on PS4 it seems. The fact it is on the new Ignite engine is clear.

Thanks for the shout. I didn't play that on PS3 and it's been on my list since the PS4 version was announced.

Demo only so I can't comment, but if so then that's unfortunate.

Wish I could agree. Glad you're enjoying it, but I have been disappointed in the "leap" of FIFA and Madden. I own them both (PS4 and XB1, respectively). I'm a sucker for sports games, so I had no choice.

I think the graphics upgrade is pretty lackluster. I can see the difference but there is definitely more power in these systems.

Agree the game looks clean and crisp but the graphics are not overhauled. The gameplay on full manual is soooooo much better though. The cutaways and Tv style presentation is top notch also. Leap is pretty big if you ask me. Never played with assisted controls so don't know if that has changed much. Can't wait to see what they do moving forward.

Most on Gaf brush off sports games, so I expect the cynicism to be high. Full game is a blast for sure, tons better than the last generation starting off.

I keep hearing about that throughpass flaw, but I'm a Division 1 player and what you say is only true if you are a beginner.

FIFA14 is easily my most played PS4 game and I am rubbish playing it. I am trying to free myself of dependence on through balls and crosses, but others keep doing them to win so I tend to resort back to sweaty through ball plays just to stay in the game.

After how they ruined Madden, and gave out this thrash ass live game at 60$ They don't deserve their place in the gaming industry. Don't even get me started on the rest of their crap.

Bullshit.

The heavy feel of 14 means you can score some truly beautiful goals from simple 'X' passes.

Play me, I'll show you.

They cut a huge amount of modes from the game and, speaking personally, the game is littered with crashes. Every time I try to complete the first match of an OFFLINE season the game tries to poll a server somewhere and I get the familiar PS4 crash error code. Next gen is awesome.

I found FIFA 14 to be a little impressive as a generational jump, but it does look like EA did the bare minimum. I would have been happy with it if I didn't just get NBA 2k14. Christ that game is a powerhouse, I'm blown away while playing it.

I definitely agree, I rarely scored from run-by goals and people basically never score them on me. Fifa 14 is way, way better balanced than the previous ones.

Plus you know it'll be back in FIFA 15 in 10 months time. Along with, hopefully, touchpad shot targeting like in the Vita version.

By far my most played next-gen game too.

Just a really great game all round, shame it isn't a huge upgrade significantly over the PS3/360 versions, that's my biggest complaint.

I find that the real differences aren't as much graphical as they are the way players interact with each other. Makes it actually feel like it plays differently. Defenders seemingly stay much closer to people almost hugging them close. With some of these titles it seems like the less you look for and the more you play the more you notice little differences that seem to make it look and feel different.

Imo it looks nearly the same as last gen. Same with Madden. 2K did right with NBA though. Which is why it pisses me off hoe EA is a ble to maek an exclusive deal with the NFL for games. 2K would give them some real good competition.

I'm really enjoying Fifa14 on PS4, after I finally figured out how to simply play a season which involves the career mode. I haven't had any crashes etc. I can't hide my disappointment at the removal of tournament mode though, that was one of my most used modes when my friend came around for coop...

Most of the criticism I read of EA games on these forums is bullshit, particularly the FIFA stuff (much of which I suspect is written by people who don't actually play it but just buy into the hate because, well, that's what the internet does right?). FIFA 14 was great on last-gen but the Ignite version is significantly better. I'm absolutely loving it. Worth playing with the sliders too - the Orion slider guides really transform the single player game. I swear by them now.

I agree with Fifa 14 surprising me. I hadn't played a Fifa since 11, which was just a buggy worthless piece of crap, but 14 on PS4 is infinitely better than that.
I still have to get used to not needing to run all the time and x to defend not really doing anything, but that makes it a more fun challenge, rather than some sort of football/pinball hybrid.

So far I'm glad I gave it another chance, even though the changed mechanics make me a terrible player.

Doesn't that force you to 'play' through all the BS management simulation stuff, though (trades and the likes)?

I don't want to have to deal with all that, I just want to play some soccer.

Played it yesterday for the first game and immediately it felt better than FIFA 14 last-gen demo. Animations look a lot better and it has more variety, the movement is less clunky but the teammate AI is still miles behind what PES offers.

Overall I'm very pleased by what I played.

It is trash and a pretty garbage game. They have all the pieces to make a good football game and they spoil it with the horrible gameplay that does not even resemble real football. Keys to Success in Fifa:
1) L1 + X 2-3 times
2)L1 + Triangle
3) Shoot

Repeat till the game ends.
