I just turned on my PS3 and Plus told me it downloaded a new FW 4.53.

Should've been supported at launch, IMO.

Do you think they'll universally patch DS4 support at the firmware level in the future?

It's already supported in most games if you connect using a cable. But I assume you mean rumble, gyro, wireless etc. That would be good, love the DS4.

The only version I got was 4.50 via the automatic update.

I could've sworn I've seen Blu Rays with CC.

I REALLY, REALLY could've used this feature in the past for some the DVDs that I own, that don't have English subtitles, but have English CC.

Aren't those just a different subtitle track? Usually 'English for hard of hearing' or something?

Probably because CC over HDMI is weirdly complicated, or was.

This is launch for all intents and purposes. If a feature is delayed by 2-3 weeks from the release of a product, it's not really a big deal.

Edit: Can't read correctly.

You're cutting Sony a lot of slack if you think seven years is launch window.

I would just settle for the same functionality only not needing to be wired.

Eh, I use subtitle all the time on PS3 because I'm Deaf.

Maybe the old fashion CC. Black background that no one use it anymore.

Yeah, I think this is actual video stream CC, which I didn't know Blu-rays supported. Afaik, most DVD releases do CC both with the standard DVD subtitle system and the traditional CC system, but traditional CC use the white text on a black background, like you'd see on TV in a restaurant. That method is handy for people who are both hard of hearing and have low vision (like older people) because the subtitles are easier to see.

But looking it up on wikipedia, supposedly Blu-ray can't handle the old CC system at all. Odd.

Traditional closed captioning (which predates the DVD format) encodes data into the top fields of video (which should not be visible due to overscan). Closed caption processors decode this information from the video in order to overlay the captions. DVDs authored from TV broadcast sources can preserve the classic field encoding for NTSC broadcasts so this method still works as long as the DVD is of sufficient quality for the encoding to not be garbled up.

This is different from subtitles defined by the DVD/BD specs, which are data streams completely separate from the video.

Same here, seriously without subtitle I wouldn't have a clue of what is going on.

Used to be a pain when I was younger and when Video game didn't have subtitles.

My only really strongly wanted PS3 feature at this point is the ability to find PSN friends via Facebook. It's fucking bizarre that that never made it into the system, since basically anything that hooks into Facebook can do that incredibly easily via the APIs that Facebook provides, and it'd provide for *much* better PSN/social engagement.
