A friend of mine is trying to get me to play DOTA 2 as his experience learning and playing with randoms was frustrating in his words. He mentioned that the community is very hostile to new players--no idea if this is true or if he just met up with assholes, which are everywhere sadly.
I felt the original SFIV community was pretty welcoming online. I got a lot of tips via in game messages.
What are your experiences with online communities and how welcoming they are?
Yeah, the general dota community is just about as bad as it gets. The LoL community is also generally bad.

Small time MMOs generally have pretty inviting communities because they don't want to scare off newcomers.
Dark Souls
According to the the ingame interaction at least.

I found Payday 2 to be pretty welcoming, but that's Co-Op multiplayer
Competitive?
Pokemon, Smash.
Non-competitive?

Virtua Fighter!
Has to be Minecraft.
Any new game. When everyone is learning they tend to help each other out. If you try coming into any game a week or two into it, many people don't want to cut you any slack. This is especially true in competitive games or games that take a lot of time in general.
From my personal experience, it was FFXI around 2007. A Linkshell (Guild basically) showed me the ropes around the game. Back then, FFXI was pretty hard. You can't solo at at all. The game wasn't designed to be solo yolo like MMOs of today. Don't know if that hold true anymore.
Virtua Fighter hands down!
I met some nice people while playing TF2 - and only around 66% asked my if they can try my unusual for a minute.
I know people that are cool and shit... that is until you play Dota 2 with them.
Shawn Elliot said (paraphrasing):
"The worse thing you can put on your head besides a shotgun is a xbox live headset."
That sounds like a good alternative to a match of Dota 2.

Pokemon, fighting game community.
Guild Wars 2 has a very nice community here on GAF, full of a handful of members who will repeatedly inform newcomers on almost anything they inquire about. The official forums are terrible though.

Halo has a very low barrier to entry, and so many modes to play that you can almost always find a match where you are going to be able to do alright.
Really, any non-team based game or game mode should fit the bill too.

I would personally say the Red Orchestra 2 community is awesome if you're willing to listen to us.
Pokemon X & Y have been awesome since day one. Rando's challenge you to battles and trade randomly and usually drop a "Nice!" or an O-Power once you're done.
FFXI (the Final Fantasy MMO) is also a nice community because everything is so team-focused that you need to work together right from the get-go.

If you're female, it has to be any fighter.
I've played The Secret World at launch and then came back several times, and never has this game's community failed to impress me with how friendly it is.
Whatever the opposite of dota is
The Monaco PC community is probably the friendliest I've ever encountered. Shame there probably isnt one any more.
Mobas and shooters are typically the worst. I find that fighting games usually have the best. I think it's because the matches are short and you aren't relying on "noob" team members to win, so there's really no one to get pissed off with.

I'm still active-ish! And I agree it is quite friendly. The Monaco PC community is probably the friendliest I've ever encountered. Shame there probably isnt one any more.
Most MP games that aren't popular FPSs or TPSs are usually pretty friendly, IMO. Although the first that sprang to mind was LittleBigPlanet.
Final Fantasy 11 pre 2011, you had such a reliance on other people in that game it forced you to cooperate. Being an asshole was detrimental to your in game livelihood, and could easily find yourself blacklisted by the community
Guild Wars 2 has an amazingly inviting community. Especially the GAF Guild.
Soul Sacrifice, LBP series
Natural Selection 2
MOBA's are very strange, having played lol for 2 years IF you have a good group of friends its great but going solo is stupid. I played sc2 for 2 years before LOL and it was the same, its so hard to group with people and even harder than that to get people who are interested in the experience over the outcome. I have joined countless clans and groups for LOL and every time I have played the sole purpose of the experience is to win, not to have fun.
Anything that doesn't need team play for victory .
Mass effect community is really good. Had some great Pub matches and once you proved you're a team player you will be welcomed.

The Souls community, which is a bit interesting to me.
Diablo 3 official B.net forums
Most MMOs.
Starcraft 2 in its early days.

Guild Wars 2 was pretty fantastic when I first started, everyone was so helpful. Natural Selection 2 was also fairly great, at least on the UK newbie friendly servers I was playing on. Good banter and very helpful.
Monster Hunter is pretty welcoming of new players.
Most MMOs that are not free for all PVP are pretty welcoming of new players. You still have your jerks that exist but they aren't the norm I feel.

There are just 2 communities that are really nice.
Nuclear Dawn and Natural Selection 2.
Payday 2 and L4D Communities are a kick-fest.
Moba and FPS is just insults everywhere.

Flight Sim community by a significant margin haha.
I remember when Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow first came out for original Xbox, it was the nicest, friendliest online experience I've ever had for at least the first month or two. So many cool people I friended on Live who were just as generally interested in trying this totally unique multiplayer experience for the first time.
Haven't had the same positive online experience this gen that I can remember.

Fighting game community.
Dark Souls seems ok. I did get yelled at once by a guy that I killed while working on one of the Covenants. And by yelled at I meant he sent me a strongly worded message. This was on PC.
Virtua Fighter and the KOF community are full of nice ass people.
The LoL community, nothing but sugar and sweets.
Jk, for anyone who doesn't understand sarcasm.

I don't think there is one. The VF community is nice because it's small and everyone in that community is a killer desperate for fresh meat.
Burnout Paradise had the friendliest online community this generation in my experience. Everyone was so chill and relaxed, they'd help each other learn stunts and just screw around laugh and have fun.
I remember this one dude was having trouble doing a particular stunt challenge in the airport location (you had to drive off a hangar and barrel roll through a ring). And after like 30 minutes of this guy retrying over and over again, nobody was mad or screaming at him or quitting out, instead they were being patient and giving him tips and cheering him on. I feel like that wouldn't happen in any other game.
Midtown Madness 3 on the original Xbox also had an extremely friendly community.

Competitive: Team Fortress 2
Co-op: Guild Wars 2

Id say monster hunter or warframe. both games I couldn't possibly figure out without the help of other experienced players/beta testers
