I don't know where people get off in saying LoL is a terrible MP community. No one yelled at me when I got like, seven deaths before in a random match. Seriously, I play LoL as a casual gamer (as in, playing it time and time again, sometimes disappearing for months), and absolutely NOBODY has called me out before on it. Not one insult.

Then again, I don't really talk to anyone when playing online either, so maybe it's because of that?

No one here has probably heard of it, but Kingdom of Loathing has by far the best community I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. Everyone is super helpful, chats are well moderated (no memes, ascii, or other random crap that pollutes it), and the creator has a podcast that answers questions and talks about future updates.

I've gotten millions worth of free stuff on there by just joining a random clan and asking for help.

Me: "Can someone help me out in figuring out how to do this quest?"

Someone else: "Here have all this free stuff to help you out."

Must be nice living in an alternate universe where you're not yelled at constantly for not carrying as a support Blitzcrank.

For me it's Demon's Souls/Dark Souls but then again i don't play many online games.I played both games yesterday after a long time and i was surprised at how helpful and polite the community still were (at least on PS3.)
I remember when i was playing on the Asian version of Demon's when even the players who invaded were always bowing before the fight and always fighted fair.Once i didn't want to fight and the black phantom just killed most of the enemies and then suicided.

Souls players have a heart of gold.:)

No, really. I think the fact that every playable race/class is a sexist caricature paradoxically weeds out the the kind of immature player who cant handle playing a sexist caricature less it shatter their fragile sense of masculinity*. The ones who are left have enough of a sense of humor about themselves and the ridiculous fetish-toons they're controlling that it kind of naturally translates into being jovial, helpful sort of player equally willing to help a noob with skill point allocation as they are to engage in high level PVP. The only hostility I've seen in the community has been directed at Aeria itself for its crappy cash shop and recent server merges.

Shame the game itself is so goddam boring though.

*-Mind, I'm not saying that's the sole reason people choose not to play this game; a lot of pope reject it on principle, and that's fine. This actually helps generate a more friendly community as well: Do you really want to play with someone who's gonna scream 'omg sexism!!!!1111oneone' every few seconds?

As for the very best current community, Natural Selection 2, easy. The structure of the game encourages it. Nine times out of ten all you need to do is tell the commander you need help and you will get it.

Runners up are Arma (depending on the mode and server culture), Red Orchestra 2, and Dark Souls, if it counts. Dark Souls fans are so excited about the game all the time, it's refreshing compared to the constant whining about every little flaw you get with games like CS:GO and Dota 2.

I think in general medium sized communities are best. Too big and its the unwashed masses, !most of whom know they won't be around in two weeks so they just don't care about their reputations. Too small and you see the same six guys dominating and telling you to fuck off.

SFIV was full in of trolls in the beginning. They're mostly gone now, though.

I find that the Call of Duty community is pretty welcoming if you have voice chat turned off.

Fat Princess had an awesome community that was killed quite effectively by Sony releasing a patch that fucked up the game. The community was dwindling and then, once PSN went down for all those weeks, it was pretty much over :(

I miss that game :(

If you can't have fun while losing, especially with matchmaking that tries to make sure you lose 50% of the time, you probably shouldn't be playing that game.

When Forza 2 was around - that. Best gaming community I've ever seen. Imagine getting online to play with randoms and sitting around actually chatting with everybody. Imagine everybody communicating with each other racing, saying sorry for accidents and generally being polite to each other. Imagine people sending strangers free cars in order to help them find a competitive car. It was just brilliant.

And then Turn 10 introduced matchmaking and killed it all. Still a decent community but nothing like it used to be.

I haven't had experience in a ton of multiplayer games, but I love the FGC. The shittalking online is whatever, but all the people I've met offline have been great. Everyone's willing to play you for a few games and give you tips even if you suck, and everyone's really just open and friendly in general. I've shared hotel rooms with people without much of a problem and people I barely even knew have even offered to house me and others for monthlies. It's a shame that everyone judges the FGC off of stream tabloid stories and online rage, because it's full of great people.

Sometimes people can get very frustrated on Killing Floor because of how much time you lose when someone fucks up and it costs you the round. Its surprisingly rare, though. Tripwire games seem to attract a good class of people.

The entry level is high for higher level of play yeah, but I'd say a fighting game is more accessible than Brood War. In my experience the FGC is very friendly. Sure there's testosterone there and it provides the chance for trash talk, but overall people are always willing to help and talk to people. Sorry to hear you had a a bad experience though.

Guild Wars 2 works well because unlike many MMOs, the devs tried their best to foster teamwork thanks to level scaling, no mob tagging, and individualized loot.

RP server on any MMO

RP servers on WoW were the only time I enjoyed the game even though I don't RP. Everyone tends to be more accepting and have better grammar and spelling. Makes sense when you think about it.

The entry level for high-level play is high, but the entry level for the community is so low. I showed up at some random person's casuals barely knowing anything about fighting games (not that I'm any better now :P) and they basically taught me from the ground up. I went to random tournaments with people in my local scene and everyone in the different places I visited was really positive and encouraging.

PSO/PSU/PSO2 people seem really nice.

The game setup itself helps a ton there tho. It's basically all co-op, and in general there isn't a ton you can do to grief.

In the MMO territory I always thought LOTRO had a nice group of players.

I too thought it would be populated by angry flamers but when shit hit the fan everyone just laughed it off because of how hilarious Monaco becomes at that point. And when someone died everyone would band together to revive them.

I played the crap out of it online during the first couple of months and no one ever raged.

It's actually the other way round. The Journey devs took inspiration from Demon's/Dark Souls for their game. There are articles about it.

Gonna have to second all the votes for Guild Wars 2, and mention Lord of the Rings Online, which was also very friendly.

So many Guild Wars 2 players in here I don't recognize. I hope the community thread isn't too intimidating and some of you guys will drop by and say hello. Also really pleased to see people naming the GAF Guild specifically, we've tried really hard to be a laid back guild that includes as many play styles as possible. <3 GW2 GAF.

I am surprised nobody till the third page has mentioned Killing Floor, is one of the best communities I have meet really nice people, I even made friends on Steam playing that game with whom I later played other games.

About DOTA 2, I have mixed feelings, I have had very good teammates who later I have added on Steam, on the other hand, it has been the only game where I have spent 40 minutes exchanging insults with somebody through the chat, I learned to keep chill during discussions with this game.

The entire experience threw me off Competitive Smash and I haven't played in many years.

Went over to competitive Street Fighter and it had been nothing but love and encouragement. Messed up in a match? People would take me aside and tell me what I did wrong or what I needed to do. Just my 2 cents, but anyone saying Smash is friendly makes me laugh.

This thread really makes me want to get involved in the various GAF communities. Pretty much all my friends aren't gamers or are very casual so any game that thrives with a solid community I've avoided over the years. Seems like this is a great place to find like minded gamers playing a huge variety of games.

I actually miss that brand of XBL crazy. You'll most likely never experience that again, what with every system having party chat now, and Nintendo online most likely not attracting crazies.

Now PC games, those are probably the only way to still experience that type of stuff. It also allowed you to make some new friends though, as not everyone acts like an idiot, but you wouldnt know if you were always in party chat with friends.
