So each planet has multiple 'destinations'. Some of the ones we know are moon - hell mouth , moon - moon base, moon - accelerator, earth - cosmodrome, earth - forest and so on. So each planet has multiple places or 'destinations' within it.

They said the limit on a single destination was 2 km by 2 km. they also said that the entire halo reach geometry could fit within one of the destinations they are working on.

Well, I feel the OP explains this fairly well...

It's definitely not 'tacked on'.

It's SP in that you can play and beat the game by yourself if you want to. All the story missions can be done solo and you can plow through it like any SP game and put it on the shelf when done.

I'm more curious about how well the SP -> MP aspects will flow into each other. The FATE system in FFXIV works well, but can sometimes end up being a clusterfuck of players and disappearing mobs.

Back to the original point, why is this(SP) a surprise? Watching the playthrough from E3 they made it pretty obvious that the co-op was drop-in/drop-out, which to me sounded like you can play by yourself.

I'm 46 so you can imagine the slim pickings in my social circle for online games. My 62 year old uncle played halo with me but he retired with an rv. I gotta be more social. Dam you destiny.

I love how they're portraying the solar system with Destiny. It's close enough to be familiar and for us to have a sense of "home," but our information about what's actually out there is just sketchy enough to lend them an immense feeling of mystery and lets them have such great artistic freedom.

Okay maybe I am just overthinking this

Destiny's Venus is occupied by time traveling robots that built a giant metal citadel in the middle of a space jungle.

I don't think that the "how" is really one of the important details.

I'm definitely going to be waiting for the reviews first. I'm only interested in the solo experience though I have no issues being connected at all times. If it's more like the solo experience in an mmo (wow etc) that would be a disappointment. If it is a fully fleshed out story that's completely doable solo and with some solo sandbox exploration available it suddenly becomes a lot more interesting to me as a gamer.

As a gaming analyst however it's already the most interesting game around and probably the single most ambitious game in a long time. It's success is critical to Activision and they're no dummies so I'm inclined to think they know what they're doing.

It's absolutely going to be a trend. Publishers are going to fall back on this heavily I suspect, since the notion of system-level online requirement was quashed.

That's the best summary I've read. I'm still looking forward to the game, but it definitely sounds like one to pick up four or six weeks after launch.

First we need to clear up what SP means.
Some people are using it to mean traditional "Campaign" (alone)
Some people are using it to mean any "Campaign" (alone or co-op)

Assuming you mean any "Campaign":
I though we always knew it was a campaign based game, that had the option of co-op (like Halo, Gears, Borderlands, etc...)

The online requirement sucks though. Especially since it's going to require the Live/PS+ paywall to play alone.

I honestly haven't heard much about any competitive MP.

My impression is that the structure will be more open world RPGish. For instance, Skyrim has a single player story that you can go and play and ignore all the other gubbins. In my head, Destiny is like that, but with more compelling story and gameplay - and when you partake of the (optional) gubbins, other characters are people online. I don't think this means the single player is tacked on - they haven't spent 5-6 years building a deep fiction and universe so they can quickly throw a rubbish story together and have a 'single player campaign' bullet point on the box!

I meant a traditional fleshed out single player with a thought out story and well implemented gameplay mechanics and AI. Not just going solo on simple missions and maps taken from the MP portion of the game. Not sure if get me. Even after reading the quote in the OP, I'm not convinced that this game will feature a proper SP campaign like the HALO games do, for example.

EDIT: After reading the mod edit (which I missed), I honestly don't know what to think.

Bungie's upcoming Destiny will feature a highly crafted narrative experience, one that you can experience as a traditional "campaign." However, even if you're playing the game single-player, you will need an online connection. "To play Destiny, you need to be connected," Bungie's Pete Parsons succinctly noted.

Even if we got away with making MS change their online policies, publishers will shove this kind of crap through our throats.

Damn it. The game still sounds great, but I can't help but to have a bitter taste while reading news about the game.

Sounds like I'll be picking this up then. I don't feel like playing with other people most of the time, but if I'm free to explore and complete missions by myself that's good enough for me.

Really looking forward to this title and future series of games for Destiny. But they really need to deliver a huge world that really is explorable. More importantly that, you will want to explore and interact with.

Putting the online requirement on PC games sucked, but now take that and add the Live/PS+ paywall.

There are main characters, villains, traditional story cutscenes, set pieces, etc just like a Halo campaign.

Alright. Will pay more attention to this game from now on then. I felt like the world Bungie was creating in this game felt too rich and beautiful for it to be limited to MP.

That's just me though since I don't enjoy MP only games as much.

Agreed. Titanfall seems to be refining existing small arena shooters while this - based on their promises and claims - genuinely sounds like it could push the boundaries of the genre. Really quite excited for what they're trying to do, and I love a good sci-fi universe.

I don't believe they've ever mentioned subscriptions, so I would assume they're not in the game. I wouldn't be surprised if there's something in there like Diablo 3's auction house, or cosmetic micro-transactions, or some way for them to keep earning once the game's released.

Nothing about titanfall is an arena shooter, nor a refinement of them.

Titanfall seems to be the total opposite, trying to blend the set piece moments in MP.

From the GameInformer article: '"We're not charging a subscription fee for Destiny," [Bungie technical director Chris] Butcher confirms.'

From an interview with Eric Hirshberg, president and CEO of Activision Publishing in the same issue, after being asked how content will be added to Destiny (expansions, sequels, microtransactions, subscriptions as options): "Not a subscription, that's for sure. In terms of the other things listed, it's sort of all of the above."

There'll be monetization but I have some amount of faith in Bungie to not let it get too gross.

Well, Titanfall's had a lot more media on it as well as a huge marketing push given it's closer to release.

Once Activision ratchets up the marketing campaign for Destiny, we'll be seeing a lot of talk on it. Count on it.
