The National Security Agency is gathering nearly 5 billion records a day on the whereabouts of cellphones around the world, according to top-secret documents and interviews with U.S. intelligence officials, enabling the agency to track the movements of individuals — and map their relationships — in ways that would have been previously unimaginable.

The records feed a vast database that stores information about the locations of at least hundreds of millions of devices, according to the officials and the documents, which were provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. New projects created to analyze that data have provided the intelligence community with what amounts to a mass surveillance tool.

One senior collection manager, speaking on condition of anonymity but with permission from the NSA, said “we are getting vast volumes” of location data from around the world by tapping into the cables that connect mobile networks globally and that serve U.S. cellphones as well as foreign ones. Additionally, data is often collected from the tens of millions of Americans who travel abroad with their cellphones every year.

In scale, scope and potential impact on privacy, the efforts to collect and analyze location data may be unsurpassed among the NSA surveillance programs that have been disclosed since June. Analysts can find cellphones anywhere in the world, retrace their movements and expose hidden relationships among individuals using them.

I wish I could see some of the algorithms they are running on this. Gotta be more than just graph traversal, let alone doing it for every single phone tower.

That or he'll fall down some stairs.

But seriously, NSA said they know what he took and they were considering doing an info dump so of everything he stole so they could effectively neutralize him as having any power over the narrative.

I'm really not surprised by this anymore. The NSA's been lying since the leaks began that they aren't listening in or tracking people or whatever. Complete lies. We are just a few steps away from Big Brother completely taking over and most people won't give a damn about giving up their own personal rights for the sake of 'security'.

Welcome to the fucking future. Ain't it just so bright and shiny and full of lens flares and daisies?

Not sure the NSA is going to try and air their dirty laundry themselves because they want to avoid as much a shitstorm as possible. I think they're just lucky the majority of Americans aren't rattled by the news. Not sure about the rest of the world though.

No issue if nothing to hide, right? it's not a valid argument and never will be.

It was all given to the people who didn't buy cell phones, or left them at home today, or had them stolen, or are out of battery (Droid Bionic: FREEDOM MACHINE), I guess.

Welp this is why the defense budget is so big. I would wager the remaining 2 billion people or so just dont have cell phones, not that they are not being tracked. Essentially everyone with a phone is being tracked at all times.

Actually, my uncle, who is really into conspiracy theories, talked about this happening years ago when he heard that the NSA was building a huge server farm.

Never forget. They are going 3 hops.

Oh and I heard the NSA's mission is of great value to the nation. NSA performs its mission the right way - lawful, compliant and in a way that protects civil liberties and privacy. NSA performs its mission exceptionally well.

I think it's less to do with "freedom" and more to do with the fact that something like this can be very, very easily abused.

Technically it isn't him who releases this, he gave 56k documents to the press, and a bunch of journalists decide what they should release. Snowden doesn't have any control over the material anymore.

Yes it is especially when the data is being fed in by telecoms and then most likely sold same thind Google does with all its data.
"[The tech companies] are wordsmithing -- they didn't know it was called PRISM, maybe, but they were asked to provide access," Janke told CNNMoney. "Otherwise the government would be sending subpoenas every five seconds."

They're not necessarily taking away your freedom right now (aside from your freedom to privacy), but that's not the point. All of this surveillance might be fine and well if our government and the governments around the world were perfect, and fair, and guaranteed to remain that way until the end of time.

But imagine these governments having all this power, and then one day deciding, "Ok, we don't like anyone with the forum name 'Heretic'. Let's round them all up, and their families, and send them off to a labor camp." I know that's not the best way of putting it, but I figure it gets the point across.

The biggest thing is that our governments are far from perfect right now, without any imaginary slippery slope for them to slide down.
