Since I'm unable to fulfill your criteria of saying anything substantially commendable about the game -despite generously offering a nice conspiracy theory since that's as good as anything anybody has regarding explanation for Knack's universally-accepted mediocrity- it's probably best if we just go back to my original view of 'The startling repetition and lack of strategy in the game is wholly at odds with the impressive production values, and such an approach does nothing for my enduring, design-centric gaming tastes', or even 'I played half of it my mate's PS4 and it was SHIT LOL', if that works better for you.So, still dodging an actual answer to my question because apparently your beef with this game is driven more by your overbearing concern over the recent cult of personality surrounding Cerny's emergence as a more public figure rather than anything the game actually does wrong. Reading you LOUD AND CLEAR, chief.
There is such a point where a game is so audio/visually/storywise terrible that the best gameplay in the universe won't save it. Being Clover's "swan song" really saved this game from the backlash it deserved, not least for the squalid gay stereotypes. You think that godhand is a bad game, i'm sorry for you
Edit: but let's not derail this thread, it's about Knack.
- some games I've been swayed to buy from overwhelmingly positive GAF impressions (sometimes get burnt)
- I've just ordered Knack because it generates so much polarising opinion I have to see for myself.
If Knack was a 'forgettable nothing' people wouldn't be so insistent on tearing it down or insulting people who do enjoy it as wearing "launch goggles".He's saying it wouldn't have competed with the slew of great platformer/action titles on the PS2. And guess what. He's right. Knack is a forgettable nothing. A generic mascot running around a bland world telling an uninteresting story.
They'd let it be forgotten, but people want to talk shit about something and Knack is a good one to do that. You won't get called on it much, because people who haven't played it but seen reviews will agree with you. And anyone that enjoyed it, still knows it's not the coming of Jesus so won't fight back that harshly over it.
Perfect game to tear down.
I know when a game is mediocre. Bulletwitch is one of my favorite 360 games and it's a terrible game. I enjoyed Contrast too, but it's got a lot of issues (stiff animation, iffy platforming, horrible box puzzles).Originally Posted by LiveFromKyoto
Maybe, but most people can't come to terms with the fact that they like something that can reasonably be considered mediocre. Like, I think I enjoyed Contrast more than anything on launch day, but I recognize it for what it is. Knack is totally middle of the road at best in every department.
Knack is a solid game. No one is saying it's a masterpiece. I personally think it's great at what it is.
What you fail to understand, is often times people don't take games for what they're meant to be. They want it to be something else entirely. Knack is an action game with some platforming, meant to be simplified so that it can ease in newcomers coming off mobile gaming. And difficult enough for gamers to find some enjoyment out of. It does this wonderfully. It's designed how it is, for a reason.
You may not like that, but there's a reason the game is the way it is. I can see why people wouldn't enjoy it, but people who have never played it shouldn't talk about it's quality at all.
Please post back with your opinion. It seems like most people are against it for some odd reasons ("launch goggles", disappointed it's not a platformer when it was never advertised as one), I'd like to see the opinion of someone who has no opinion going into it.- some games I buy because I'm really looking forward to them

As much as I love and slightly fancy Mark from CGR, I don't agree with him on this one.
Knack's fun. Admittedly I've not finished a playthrough yet, but I've seen nothing broken about it. It's a solidly put together game which is fun and especially suited to Remote Play.
The best thing about it for me is that it harks back to arcade gameplay - it's unforgiving, relies upon reaction time and demands memorisation. If only it had a scoring system (with multipliers), I'd be set.
I went in expecting a disaster and was pleasantly surprised by a solid, fun game.
I think reviewers went in expecting the PS4 equivalent of Mario and were disappointed.
It's probably not worth full price though.
It's interesting that people were disappointed about the platforming. Like you said, it wasn't advertised as one. And I believe even Cerny said something like, "Where Crash is 90% platforming, 10% combat; Knack is 90% combat, 10% platforming."Please post back with your opinion. And the final game had more platforming than I was expecting because going in I wasn't expecting much at all. It's not well balanced though, you go through a lot of chapters with next to no platforming then it starts up again. (I don't really count jumping up ledges built like stairs as platforming :P)
I definitely agree with the bolded. The game could have definitely used some fine tuning here and there. But yeah, people shitting on the game for the lack of something it was never said to have is odd. It's interesting that people were disappointed about the platforming. The only think that has stopped me buying it is that I do think it's over priced, if it was £20-£25 to download I'd likely be playing it right now.
This is the attitude I don't understand. It's the length of a God of War game, easily. It has replay value with collectibles, time attacks, and Colosseum mode. So should the God of War games be 20-25 also? Uncharted was around this length, too. Is it the fact that it's a new IP that should make it so cheap? Or the lack of a tacked on multiplayer?Only played a few areas in a friends house so can't comment on the whole game but I did enjoy what I played. I think what I really enjoyed about it was how it felt like the games I'd play as a kid, so much of it is old fashioned and I know that doesn't suit everybody but it really worked for me.

Yeah. There's 80,000 people on GAF. With such variety nobody should be skeptical that there will be a lot of people here who like something, just because they like it. They don't need ulterior motives.I find it quite disheartening when people say things like 'launch goggles' etc in an incredibly condescending manner. A lot of people are genuinely enjoying the game and think it's a fun time but a lot of folk can't deal with that viewpoint instead choosing to be snidey mother fuckers instead.
I think the reason there is so much discussion about it is because its a first party launch game and because of all the hype around Cerny.Originally Posted by Interfectum
