Now I know people will point to reviews, but ignore those and listen to me.,,,

it's actually a pretty great game. Visually stunning (videos really do not do it justice, it looks incredible in person), the combat, while pretty simplistic and lacking in variety, is actually very satisfying once you've mastered the mechanics and the enemy encounters are great..you feel like a complete badass when you face off against 5 barbarians and take them all down flawlessly...

The locations are all wonderfully realised and the lighting throughout is just eye meltingly orgasmic.

That's not to say it doesn't have issues. Lack of weapon and combat variety does hurt the game and make it feel pretty repetitive and the lack of enemy variety also means you start to feel a little bored towards the end, but these are things that can easily be fixed in any sequel .

In short, reviews, for me at least, were utterly wrong. it's short, it lacks variety, but it's a still a great game and one I'm glad I gave a chance...

I played the game for almost an hour and got all I wanted from it.

Exactly how I and many feel about Knack.
Hope there's quality sequels to both that deal with these issues.

EDIT: Also reminds me of The Bouncer.

So basically it's got great graphics, but everything else sucks. Sounds like your opinion isn't much different than the majority of people.

After one hour...you haven't seen anything cool. It gets much more fun as it goes.

Also, play on the hardest difficulty.

I've really enjoyed my time with it.

The parity with Knack is astounding here. Just goes to show how much fun you can have with a game even if its not critically well-received.

It's really, really not.

The glitches were embarassing, on top of the pedestrian and repetitive gameplay. All of the characters and animations appear to exist in a vacuum to the environments, with the exception of some awkward transitions to environmental kills.

I put this together just with my videos on my console (I beat it on Hard):

https://vimeo.com/80741278

It's a sophomoric, weak, undercooked, repetitive, easy game IMO.

6.6 game for me, and most of all a great wasted opportunity.
There's some good stuff there, but also quite a few significantly bad design choices.

I can see Ryse 2: Roman Boogaloo being pretty great if they add different weapons and more varied combat/explorations.

Now play some MP in the arena and work on those 100+ combos. Very addictive.

EDIT: Ryse threads are really good for adding people to the ignore list.

So basically it has good graphics and simplistic combat designed to make you feel like a badass, rather than actually giving combat depth to show that you're a badass (ie Ryu Hayabusa) and you think that's great?

I played a section of the midgame, so no dumb tutorial setpieces for me. The game's systems just aren't that interesting to fans of action games like myself.

A lot of games that score badly can be really fun to play, all cycle long. It feels like that truth becomes more prevalent at the beginning of a gen as people are forced to buy low reviewing games because there is literally nothing else, Ryse and Knack being examples. But it remains true, there's lots of fun to be had out of games that don't get good reviews. Personally I have zero interest in Ryse but just because some people or even a lot of people dislike something, doesn't mean you will. Definitely been the case for me.

I enjoyed the game. I'd give it a 7ish. The campaign is a bit short and can get repetitive but the overall combat is very satisfying. I also found the story pretty engaging and dat ending sequence left me with a huge grin on my face. I haven't put a ton of time into multiplayer but from what I've played it was fun. Nothing amazing but a neat little distraction.

I made the mistake of debuting it while I had some friends over. We were wowed, then quickly got bored. The consensus was, too bad, it had potential.

However, I went on to start over a couple of days later, and absolutely loved it. I'm having a blast going through the story, trying different executions out. Unfortunately, DR3 has taken up most of my time lately.

Sort of agree. The game is ridiculously beautiful and there is definitely a 'rhythm' that you need to master in the combat. There are some fun encounters and some really great set pieces.

All in all it was a really enjoyable experience, more so than I thought it would be. But now I don't have much desire to replay it other than to see the visuals again and perhaps the occasional co-op round with a bud, so I think it's going back for Dead Rising 3 or some other game.

Pretty much exactly what I gathered from the OP. There's probably lots of people who enjoyed it due to the beautiful visuals alone and let everything else slide. No harm in liking something others don't like.
