Then I found out that I liked it very much.
Puzzling to me.

it's actually a pretty great game..
Its the best looking game on either console right now, visually. And the combat is quite addictive if you are looking to excel at it.
I think the main reason the game got so many poor review scores is that its actually too lenient on the standard difficulty, it will actually let you play poorly and give you the same visual reward of executions. I wager the gaming journalists fell in to the trap of playing as poorly as it would let them, which would be less rewarding and deep of an experience.
Yep, I already know I'll love Knack (although, to be fair, I fell in the love the first moment I saw gameplay).Originally Posted by dallow_bg
Exactly how I and many feel about Knack.
Hope there's quality sequels to both that deal with these issues.
EDIT: Also reminds me of The Bouncer.
The Bouncer is actually a very good comparison to make.
I didn't say it sucks. There are issues, but they haven't really gotten in the way of my enjoying the game.Originally Posted by The Interrobanger

Not sure about MP yet. I've heard it's pretty buggy, but I'll give it a shot at some point. Maybe after a second run through of the campaign on a higher difficulty level.Originally Posted by Team Vernia
Now play some MP in the arena and work on those 100+ combos. Very addictive.
EDIT: Ryse threads are really good for adding people to the ignore list.
I'm a huge fan of Ninja Gaiden, DMC, Bayo, but there's a place for a game like Ryse. It doesn't require a lot of work to feel satisfied and perhaps I'm alone in sometimes just wanting to play a game and get a level of satisfaction from it without having to worry too much about constantly pulling off huge combos or fighting wars of attrition. So basically it has good graphics and simplistic combat designed to make you feel like a badass, rather than actually giving combat depth to show that you're a badass (ie Ryu Hayabusa) and you think that's great?
This provides that and in spades and that's why I think it's great. It's no NG, etc but it never attempts to be, so I'm not sure the comparison is valid one...
Sometimes I just want to pick up a controller and slash some peeps up thoughtlessly so that will fill that bill
Or they liked the gameplay... it's actually pretty fun. Hard to fathom, right?Pretty much exactly what I gathered from the OP. There's probably lots of people who enjoyed it due to the beautiful visuals alone and let everything else slide. No harm in liking something others don't like.
Just curious, where does one rent Ryse? Not about to subscribe to Gamefly, and Redbox doesn't have Xbox One games in my area.

No idea where to rent XBO games now.
Yes! Decapitating barbarians never gets old. Never.Originally Posted by famousmortimer

Dude, come on. It's me. You can trust me. I have fantastic taste in games. It's not that I don't believe you, Miles.
It's that I just can't.
;) enjoy the game.
God no. S:TW was in a league of its own, if only this was anywhere near to being as good as that magnificent title.Originally Posted by godofcookery

It has a little in common with Viking (not sure if anyone played it on PS360), but more restrictive in terms of variety.
I feel the same way. I thought the combat was a lot of fun and it was especially satisfying when you got into a good rhythm between 4 or 5 barbarians. It's similar to Batman in a lot of ways but it's not as smooth.Sort of agree. The game is ridiculously beautiful and there is definitely a 'rhythm' that you need to master in the combat. There are some fun encounters and some really great set pieces.
All in all it was a really enjoyable experience, more so than I thought it would be. But now I don't have much desire to replay it other than to see the visuals again and perhaps the occasional co-op round with a bud, so I think it's going back for Dead Rising 3 or some other game.
However, I feel like the set pieces were lacking as they all had you manning a turret. I have confidence that if Crytek can fix some issues, Ryse could be a great series.
Give me a better camera, more inventive set pieces (without going God of War on us), more enemy types, more inventive use of the executions and armor that degrades as you get hit and I would be overjoyed.
I don't know, Killzone seems much better looking to me at 1080p - with more interesting gameplay to boot.Came to say this.
Easily the best looking next gen game and oddly enough it's the one I've had the most fun with.
I'm not sure this type of simplistic combat system works for a linear campaign.Reminds me of Assassin's Creed 1. Can see it's potential. Hopefully it will get its 'AC2'.
The MP is fun because large combos require you to memorize each new scenario. Once you learn the maps and scenarios, the sky is the limit. Then the XP and gold start pouring in along with the new loot. Can't wait for the DLC now.Originally Posted by Miles Quaritch

Admittedly I haven't played the game yet, but after watching a full LP of it, I concur with your assessment. It's a matter of taste of course, some people don't like it and that's fine. I'll go ahead and say it's underrated and all they have to do is work on gameplay for the sequel and we'll have an all around solid and well received game.Originally Posted by Miles Quaritch

it's actually a pretty great game. Visually stunning (videos really do not do it justice, it looks incredible in person), the combat, while pretty simplistic and lacking in variety, is actually very satisfying once you've mastered the mechanics and the enemy encounters are great..you feel like a complete badass when you face off against 5 barbarians and take them all down flawlessly...
The locations are all wonderfully realised and the lighting throughout is just eye meltingly orgasmic.
That's not to say it doesn't have issues. Lack of weapon and combat variety does hurt the game and make it feel pretty repetitive and the lack of enemy variety also means you start to feel a little bored towards the end, but these are things that can easily be fixed in any sequel .
In short, reviews, for me at least, were utterly wrong. it's short, it lacks variety, but it's a still a great game and one I'm glad I gave a chance...
A sequel could certainly redeem it. It's VERY pretty and has some very good writing and voice acting.
But it plays like Golden Axe. The original...not II. And it's shockingly short with no signs of SP DLC. Ugh.
However, I need to try and dive into the Gladiator Mode. I hear that gives the game much more replay value. Any opinions on this, particularly?
I'll definitely give it a shot. Although I am still bitter about the lack of a chariot racing mode.Originally Posted by Team Vernia

Such a wasted opportunity. I don't even know what the hell Crytek/Ruffian were thinking by not having it in MP. Just...what the hell. It's so obvious and they'd make a nice lump sum from selling some Ben Hur DLC...
Launch game. I actually think It's amazing how polished the game's presentation is for a launch title.Originally Posted by Miles Quaritch

Pretty sure Ruffian were nothing to do with the Xbox one version, only when it was for Kinect on 360.Originally Posted by Miles Quaritch

Will buy it most likely used when I have an XB1 sometime next year
When I look at it all I can think of is that Conan game that came out on 360 a few years ago.
Shocked you'd prefer the Xbone exclusive game over the PS4 exclusive. Truly.Played and beat Killzone and I disagree with everything you just said.
However, the base combat, while simple was really annoying at higher difficult, and really a joy in normal in short spurts. There just needed to be more variety of fighting, and more things to do. Launch game crunch, yes, but I hope Crytek doesn't abandon this and go back to just FPS. They have a very talented team.
Some things really annoyed me. There was no feel to the movement of Marius, no weight or momentum. And I didn't like the invisible walls, or the fact that some of the pots were smashable and others. Drove me nuts!
Both needed deeper gameplay and more variety for moves and enemies.
Therefore, people take what they can get.
Give this a year, maybe even less, and eh, no one gonna be talkin' about Ryse.
But they will speak of Ryse 2!The new consoles are out, and there aren't many exclusives for them yet.

For me it's the blocking and shield bashing that makes the combat fun. I liken it to movement in games like Ecco the Dolphin and NiGHTS. Sometimes certain movements are just fun and in this game it's the snap of the shield interactions.Originally Posted by JaggedSac
Game is surprisingly decent. Oddly enough, trying to maintain combos is the most entertaining part of it, and setting up double executions. I really enjoyed the lighting in chapter 5 while fighting underneath the massive burning wickerman. Story is decent so far, kinda got me interested. It is certainly repetitive and needs different weapon types and enemy types, and it certainly has jank, but damn it if it isn't just an old fashioned good time.
couldve used more enemy and weapon variety, but everything is very solid otherwise. my second favorite of the xbox one's launch games behind Dead Rising 3.
