I think its awesome to show of the visuals these games are pushing but you are right. It is the most rental ass game there is. I viewed it like I would Man of Steel. Great for showing off the colors of my new TV......Thats about it.It looks like the most rental-ass rental game I've ever seen.
Example... I liked and enjoyed Cross Edge but it is a really bad game... I know that.
People just needs to realize that is perfectly fine enjoy bad games but that don't make it great.
Yeah, blocking definitely feels solid and satisfying.Originally Posted by Team Vernia

The graphics don't hurt either. It's visually stunning. I have high hopes for a proper fleshed out sequel.
if youve got the blocking down it shouldnt be too hard. there are moments against ranged enemies that can be a bit troublesome because of the fact that you take so much more damage from everything, but it isnt that much more difficult than centurion difficulty. Not going to lie, I enjoyed it on the hardest difficulty right of the bat, contemplating if I should give it another twirl on insane?
All the responses along these lines are wonderful examples of confirmation bias. The OP acknowledges flaws in the combat system, but nonetheless feels it was largely satisfying and is capable of having high points. He was also swept up by the visuals, and felt the environments were very well realized. Overall, Ryse was very enjoyable to him. I don't think it was that difficult to gather what he was trying to say, and clearly "the gameplay sucks but look at how pretty it is lol" isn't it.Originally Posted by jacksepticeye

Don't bother. People believe what they want to believe. Its a terribly boring, QTE game that has no depth whatsoever. That's what I've been told by other people who haven't played it and that's what I'm going to continue to believe because I don't own an Xbox and its easier to justify that if I think Ryse is crap.
Isn't Ryse a short game? If you get bored by the end, how good can it be?Originally Posted by Miles Quaritch
Lack of weapon and combat variety does hurt the game and make it feel pretty repetitive and the lack of enemy variety also means you start to feel a little bored towards the end, but these are things that can easily be fixed in any sequel .
Nice, thanx, will have to, game isn't half bad.if youve got the blocking down it shouldnt be too hard. there are moments against ranged enemies that can be a bit troublesome because of the fact that you take so much more damage from everything, but it isnt that much more difficult than centurion difficulty.
There aren't really any.Originally Posted by hey_it's_that_dog
How many combo attack strings are there?
The combat is basically like this: You have 4 main attacks. A shield break, strong shield break, sword slash, strong sword slash. If you use one attack too much enemies will keep evading it, so you have to alternate around to mix it up. Some enemies like the dual sword wielders are more agile by default and will block and dodge pretty much everything unless you do the heavy shield break, but it has a long start up and enemies are aggressive which makes it hard to get out. With this in mind, Ryse is at its best when it has all of the enemies at work leading to a guy with a shield charging you so you roll out of the way, and then the dual sword lunges at you which requires a flurry of timed blocks, while the large club wielder highlights red as he is about to slam down. Red attacks are unblockable in a sense and would need to be rolled around, but a perfect block works and stuns them. So managing all of this at once is actually quite fun. In games like this you typically want to manage the crowd and the way it plays out makes it difficult to take out the stronger enemy types from the start meaning you have to block and dodge them while thinning out everyone else, or positioning yourself to get off the attack, or just be in the thick of it and manage it with very good blocks. But if you get hit, you can/will get hit rapidly by other enemies.
But, again, that's really all there is through the whole game. It's a good start, but more is needed. That said, it's MUCH better than Assassin's Creed combat which is piss easy to get through unscathed. It's more akin to a fusing of Batman, but still quite a bit different.
I'd agree with this. I only picked it up because the stores I went to were sold out of AC3 and DR3. It's simple but really fun. The no fail QTEs are pretty stupid, but getting legendary timing or perfect block and strike is surprisingly satisfying.Reminds me of Assassin's Creed 1. Can see it's potential. Hopefully it will get its 'AC2'.
I've just been playing it in half hour chunks and really enjoying it. Add more weapons and punis screwing up a QTE and I'd be all about a sequel. Also keep it in Rome. There are too many boring medieval games as it is.
I thought nothing could top Heavenly Sword. I was wrong, and the game runs like dog shit to boot! I feel sorry for people that have to lie to themselves to make a terrible game good. Start of console generations are a time of ignorance. Ahhh.It looks like the most rental-ass rental game I've ever seen.
Sure, some people might like Ryse but that doesn't make it a great game by any means. Like BruceLeeRoy said, it's a rental game akin to Man of Steel where you rent it to see the pretty scenery. It's hard for me to say that since Roman history is my favorite topic to talk about and the setting alone was almost worth it to me, but that's not enough. To me, gaming is much bigger than just pretty graphics and the feeling you get when you finally make it past a part you struggled with for a bit is unrivaled. I want a game to challenge me instead of just making me an instant badass with no learning to be done. Might as well just watch it all unfold.
"the combat, while pretty simplistic and lacking in variety, is actually very satisfying once you've mastered the mechanics.."
I find calling combat simplistic but then saying it's fun once you mastered it a little weird but that's just me.
But I do agree that reviews don't matter. If you enjoye Ryse you simply enjoy it. Fuck reviews.
Not that Ryse is awful or anything, but it's extremely average, good thing it looks so good.
Knack, Killzone and Ryse are all very different games. I think the issue here is that we've gotten a haul of games with very high expectations due to being the first next-gen games, yet also games that we've seen quite a lot of and many opinions were already in the late stages of formation before they were actually even released.I like Knack.... :(
Combine that with a lot of self-fulfilling prophecy and you get games that score low that might actually be quite good once this set of expectations are dropped.
Or it could also be that people are just putting on the rose-tinted glasses to justify their high-dollar purchases, but I tend to think cynicism gets the better of most people, so I'm liable to believe the former explanation rather than the latter.
Either way, good to know that people are enjoying their launch games more than the reviews might suggest people are.
But I came away pretty impressed and pleasantly surprised by it. I can't really put my finger on it, but it's pretty fun. I think the chapters are just long enough, never outstaying their welcome, and providing a sense of pace and variety. That said, I think it's best chipped away at, a chapter a night. It helps it from becoming stale. Contrast that to Assassin's Creed IV, which I pretty much only play on weekends as I feel I don't get anything out of the game otherwise.
OP was surprised he enjoyed the game and wanted to create a "Ryse is good" thread. Mods can decide if his topic is thread worthy.Originally Posted by demolitio

It is short and I was only really a little bored because I was hoping/expecting some new enemy types considering where the game goes towards the end.Originally Posted by EventHorizon

I wasn't bored to the point where I wanted to stop playing or felt like I was going through the motions, just felt that some new enemy types with new attacks would have been a much welcome and appreciated addition from chapter 6 onwards.
Yeah, it's quite odd because I went out and bought 5 retail PS4 games and a couple DL games then I went out and bought 6 retail XB1 games and some DL games but my fav games for both platforms are Knack and Ryse which scored the lowest lmao...Needless to say I had to rethink a lot of things.Originally Posted by Seanspeed
