I have learned from Dengeki that PSP doubled its sales (60k) mainly because of the Giga Pack (Tard Pack Portable)

I hope DS had stronger sales thanks to the Pokemon critters

That's good news for Sony...the complete and total lack of PSP software in the Top 10 in the same week? Bad news.

the psp hardware has sold well in japan, but its software sales are low.

psp software's biggest competition could be ps2 (software). psp seems to be bought by ps2 owners, judging by what kinds of games sell on the handheld and there could be the problem. competing with the ps2 line-up psp would struggle.

4 days.

17th - 20th nov.

1st day sales were around 100k for both gba and ds combined, with gundam at 200k, according to the early estimates. over the weekend pokemon outsold gundam (the ds version on saturday then both ds and gba on sunday).

Great sales. But I wonder what the Japanese do with their PSP if Sony really sold 60k PSPs this week. Do they just look at it? I mean, the best selling game sold below 17k units - no way every PSP owner got a game....

People are buying games, it's just that games in general don't seem to be the focal point of the current ad campaign in Japan. The typical Japanese person knows that it plays games (it is a pureisuteeshon pootaburu after all) but over the last few weeks I've seen mostly ads for media capability, media sharing between devices, and the actual new giga-pack and white psp hardware. I think the fact that you can buy and no games but still enjoy the hardware for a while. You have the freedom to wait for price drops of software or games that you really want. I think with the release of the BEST series (Greatest Hits in America) you'll see software sales pick up. Although I am a bit worried that people will start waiting for stuff to hit discount prices instead of buying stuff new...

DS will definitely be within that margin since Pokemon was out. DS was averaging about 50K weekly before.

Wow.
I guess the subliminal advertising that the anime series employed paid off.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, the intro credits of the anime in Japan included these scenes which are based on the games boxarts:

These scenes also debuted on the Nov. 17 episode of Pokemon, which so happens to be the release date of the Mysterious Dungeon games.

Wow, those Pokemon numbers are pretty good. But didn't the other Pokemon whatever game that was released a few weeks (or months) ago do similar numbers? And are these "real" Pokemon games, or what?

Seems to be. While the anime series has been used to promote new Pokemon, this is the first time the intro credit segment has been used to promote anything besides the anime itself, much less any released games.

Oh well, it isn't the last of this type of thing anyway. An upcoming episode will feature the female character from the yet to have a release date Pokemon Ranger.

Hahaha, Gigapack is selling REALLY well in all 3 major territories. This must be the first time that the price increase has led to a significant sales increase.

I just knew Gigapack would sell well - it appeals to a broad range of potential customers. As for the JP PSP sales - it's rather encouraging and in line with Nikkei's latest poll.

Great sales for Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon!

The last two Pokemon games that have come out were both spin-offs. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl should come out Christmas next year or so. Ofcourse I'm just assuming this.

It'll be funny if the PSP outsells the DS the same week a Pokemon game is released after being behind for more than half a year. :lol

Just like DS outsold PSP during the WE/white PSP combo launch! :lol

It'd be funny, but I don't think it'll happen. Pokemon is bound to significantly increase DS hardware numbers.

Maybe PSP has a chance to outsell DS by a few thousand units this week (I don't think it will, but it's possible). But from next week (Animal Crossing), DS will probably sell 100k+ per week until january.

Well, PSP Gigapack bundles are going for that much in the UK, and they're actually flying off the shelves - even though the bundled games are mostly average/nothing special!

Yeah, that might be true but do you remember any occassion at which a game console became more expensive? I don't, maybe it's the console market's future?

People just are't buying the PSP for the games. Sony made a huge mistake by including all that other crap.

Now they are taking a huge hit on hardware sales, and not making it up with software sales. The more the PSP sales, the more money Sony loses.

Considering the terrible value of their value pack, I'm not really surprised. The Gigapack or the 500 MB pack is what the PSP should have launched with last year.

Sony wanted to launch as cheaply as possible and do a switcharoo once the units are in store by limiting quantities of the standalone units so they can charge $50 for extra 'stuff' that's not worth even half that.
