Well, I wasn't literally upside down. Let me explain with two screenshots:

Yep. I've played through Link to the Past enough now to know it like the back of my hand - and now I've finished Link Between Worlds twice, I wanted to play it with a twist.

So, I loaded it in Retroarch, flipped the display upside down and then changed the D Pad input settings so that it controlled correctly (up is down, left is right etc). It's fucking brilliant. It plays just like LTTP does, but it my sense of where things are located is totally fucked up. It's worth trying anyway. I tried flipping the graphics and fixing the text in the ROM, but it's too much work - besides, LTTP veterans know what's being said.

It got me thinking - isn't there an emulator that mirror flips the image? I swear I remember playing SMB in reverse on the PSP a while ago. Either way, I'm clueless as to what it was. Anyone got any ideas? If so, it's a fantastic way to replay older games.

... I don't get it. I believe there's a DS emulator that does exactly what you say though DesMu or something like that? I also don't think there are any 3ds emulators. Or am I wrong?

Good idea. I always thought people who played Twilight Princess on Wii should give the GCN version a shot because it was designed one way and then flipped for the Wii version, so the GCN version has the correct maps.

But it is

look at the tunnel on the first screenshot. normally it goes to the right. Basically, the lost woods is on the east side of the map now, and the eastern palace is now on the west.

I went a stage further and flipped some graphics in the ROM so they'd display correctly. I was going to then adjust the VWF text and reverse it all so it'd display correctly, but I can't be fucked. Besides, if you're going to play LTTP in reverse and upside down you really don't need the text.

And actually it's pretty fresh feeling surprisingly. A simple mirror and you have to constantly rethink where you are in the dungeons. Worth a replay imo.

Plus, you get to play it without motion controls.

(I really don't care for swordplay motion controls in a game like Zelda where you are constantly swinging your sword.)

Hmmmm interesting. A bit like when I went and replayed Twilight Princess on GameCube and was perplexed due to being flipped horizontally for the Wii (or vise versa, you know what I mean).

You need to try this with a platformer.

That'd be pretty hard I'd imagine.

I don't have much to add here aside from playing Twilight Princess on the GC and then the Wii confused the hell out of me. I could never adjust to the mirroring.

There are. No 3D obviously, but there are emulators for it.

I know of a few games that have unlockable "mirror modes" that flip the world (not upside down). It makes for an awesomely fresh experience on multiple playthrus! I wish every game did this...

Uncharted 1 & 2 (not sure about 3)
Resistance series (2 for sure)
Maybe Ratchet PS3... Can't recall exactly.

Zelda Twilight Princess is actually flipped on the Gamecube vs Wii versions too.

I think youre mistaken. There aren't any 3DS emulators available, and the file encryption used in the ROMs hasn't been cracked either.

I've been suggested this already some months ago with the question why emulators can't enable mirroring.

One of the games i like to mirror is super metroid & super mario bros 1, ...

I might see if I can write an LUA script for FCEUX that mirrors the game and sorts out the controls automatically. Not promising anything though, my LUA knowledge is basically nil.

That's basically open up the whole NES catalog.

Sounds fun but I think a few graphics do need flipping like the pots and posts. The statues aren't too bad since their backs are against the wall.

If text it too hard don't bother with it like you said.

Problem is with the graphics is the collision data is based on their original orientation. It's not as easy as just decompressing the graphics and then flipping the tiles over in yychr.

Good example would be either the statues you can walk behind or the metal rails.

The text would require not only the graphics to be flipped, but every line of text in the game to be respaced and written in reverse as well as the VWF modified to overlap correctly. Far too much work for a simple mod.

Oh ok. What about characters then? You have to admit after being so used to characters feet pointing south Link does look a bit odd with his feet in the air. Though I suppose the collision data again would be a problem.

There's a Dark Souls mod that flips the screen horizontally. It's called Mirror Mod.

This reminds me of something James Cameron said about editing movies. Eventually, you know the cuts too well and can't judge the pace of the cuts because your eyes anticipate where everything is. So, you simply flip the film and see how you handle it.

Nice work, though. I think Ocarina of Time does something like this for the Master Quest, where the whole world is mirrored. It really is like experiencing it for the first time. I might do something like this for Terranigma. I'd need to flip the text too, though.

More to the point, there's some situations where the statue orientation is relevant for a puzzle. In the Desert Palace you'd have to shoot one in the backside with an arrow.

The pots and posts do niggle me; I'd not really thought about it, but the perspective in general in LTTP is a little screwy; walls are presented as being viewed straight down while sprites within rooms have a more three-quarters view.

Wii is mirrored from the GC one, since Link is normally left-handed, but since the majority of players are right-handed they flipped the Wii version to accommodate that for the motion controls.
