It's my favorite game I've played this year and I've just expected it to fly under everyone's radar. Especially since I haven't seen it in any of the nomination lists I've seen so far (GameTrailers, AV Club voting).
But I don't suppose there's anything terribly wrong with their selections, even if the order is debatable. I, too, am surprised to see Gone Home mentioned, and satisfied.
Same here. Both Pikmin 3 and Gone Home were nice surprises. Even the mainstream gaming press overlook these games. It also doesn't have Tomb Raider in the top 5. It wouldn't surprise me if dedicated gaming sites give much worse Top 10 lists and GOTY nominees compared to this. It's got pretty decent variety for a top 10.Originally Posted by BinaryPork2737
It's a pretty decent list to be honest.
Not really understanding all the negativity about it. Take into account that this is Time. A mainstream, non-gaming related news source. They're going to go with the big high profile games. And GTA 5 was the biggest game in the non-gaming news media this year.
I'm actually surprised that Gone Home made that high on a list like this. Pleasantly surprised though.
Just feel weird about the order and the inclusion of Far Cry: Blood Dragon.
The Last of Us is my Game of the Year (and Generation), but I also loved Gone Home enough that it will probably end up in my Top 5.Originally Posted by HeelPower

I would cry myself to sleep if I were a TLoU developer lol
I always do appreciate when games try something different and have something to say, especially as I get older.
I'm honestly not a fan of "best awards" as it implies that there is an definitive, normative best. I don't see why Gone Home not being TLOU makes it of lesser value or beneath said work. Its going to be a pretty bad month, for you.
Frankly, I find this disingenuous to the other people who worked on the games to imply that they are of lesser value and inferior.
But last of us, naughty dog, emotions, ps3, mushroom zombies, artistic perfection, nirvana. How can they not see its a travesty that 5 other games could possibly be better? The Last of Us is my Game of the Year (and Generation), but I also loved Gone Home enough that it will probably end up in my Top 5.

That's right, all games are equal. The Last of Us and Ride To Hell: Retribution are on exactly the same plane of video games. Neither of them is of lesser value or inferior to the other, nosiree.Originally Posted by Andrew_Korenchkin

Some great games they forgot from this year is the aforementioned Super Mario 3D World, Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Fire Emblem Awakening, Wonderbomba, Luigis Mansion 2, Rogue Legacy and Europa Universalis 4. All worthy of a place on that list. Keep Pokemon, Pikmin and Blood Dragon, and you have a great list imo.
I didn't say ANY video game comparison makes every game equal. Ride to Hell is garbage. I'm thinking Gone Home, BioShock, The Last of Us, and Mass Effect. All amazing games, all for different purposes.Originally Posted by McDougles

Rogue Legacy's excellence can not be overstated, but I prepared myself for its GOTY exclusion long ago.Now I was ready to gush over Mario and Zelda - and they are not even on the list? Seriously?

It's definitely on my list, though.
What about the gameplay? The story in GTA V is just too awful for it to win GOTY. It's my #2, but still, this is a year with The Last of Us.
It definitely can and is frequently done so on this board.Originally Posted by antitrop

Not at all. But think about how many people have never even heard of Gone Home, read this, decide to play it, and experience the message of the game. I doubt that Gone Home is on the same mainstream popularity level of most of the games on the list. Being put that high up, even if misrepresented, is still going to be good publicity.Originally Posted by McDougles

And giving the authors of the list the benefit of the doubt, the description could possibly be intentional to avoid spoilers and reel in more attention by making it appear to be 2spooky. Chances are slim that's actually the case, but still.
That's not a good enough reason for GTAV to not win GOTY. The rest of the game though? There's the real reason. The story in GTA V is just too awful for it to win GOTY. It's my #2, but still, this is a year with The Last of Us.
The paragraph about GTAV in that TIME article reads like someone who's NEVER touched GTAV. Incredible.
It's scary how much more polished and technically improved Swap Force is compared to previous Skylanders titles... or Call of Duty: Ghosts, for that matter. Also, what's up with Skylanders hate? You guys realize that game is awesome, right?
Activision needs to bring over some of that Vicarious Visions talent to their other studios. The kids are getting spoiled this year while the dudebros have been sold a turd.
Well it's one thing to ignore the WiiU. However, the author went out of his way to give Pikmin 3 a spot, but not Mario. It honestly felt like a list of "this is what I played this year, and the order in which I enjoyed them".Originally Posted by Uncle Rupee
From what I've read of it, Super Mario 3D World's absence sort of invalidates this list entirely, doesn't it?

Fuck this list.
I mean, a list made for casual readers/gamers is absolutely silly and demeans the point. But here we go!
10. Skylanders: SwapForce - My kid likes it, so I guess everyone else does.
9. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon - I think I heard there are some retro themes with this? Yeah that seems good.
8. Bioshock: Infinte - Yeah I think this one has interracial couples. Throw this one in.
7. Pikmin 3 - Gotta pick a Nintendo game or two. Let's see...
6. The Last of Us - Oh yeah, I saw a commercial for this Walking Dead game. Pretty cool how it ties into the show.
5. Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Random game button landed on this one.
4. Gone Home - This is the one with two girls that love each other? That'll gain some hits.
3. Pokemon X & Y - Pokemon is an easy name to remember. Throw it on.
2. Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag - This is the fishing game right?
1. GTA V - We put advertisements up for them so we have to.
Note: I'm not talking about the quality, just Time's man-on-deadline-has-to-scrape-up-a-story.
