HL2 and EPISODE 2 SPOILERS
So the ending of episode 2 is not a great point to start off a full blown sequel to HL2. Basically the episodes had their own story arc that was going to end with Episode 3. From what I remember you were basically charged with meeting Mossman in the artic because there was a boat their that had some sort of technology to end the fight forever....problem is the fight is pretty much over. The mega portal has been sealed, all the troops left wont get reinforcements, and you are leaving behind all the major characters from Half-Life excluding Alyx.
So basically the sequel will be starting at an awkward point, most people arent going to remember why they are going to the arctic in the first place, and newcomers are going to be lost after picking up on a story that stopped before the final chapter 8 years ago.
And whatever graphical update that will happen is going to be jarring as hell...is the game going to start right after Eli dies in this beautifully detailed warehouse with a new Alyx and Dog model?

All they need is another Stasis and BOOM. We are off to a whole new fresh chapter. Then we get to slowly come to grips with a world that is far to big to understand from our isolated perspective through interacting with other individuals.
G-Man puts you in cryo again to whenever they want the story to take place.
It's probably not going to take place directly after Episode 2, that game was made when Valve were certain a direct Episode 3 would come out, which didn't happen. It's probably going to be set long after those events.
I hope they do the ballsy thing and skip straight ahead to a new storyline while alluding to events in the conclusion of that storyline, making sure we never get to see or play them. We just don't get an Episode 3.
Time travel. The bad guys travel back in time and Gordon has to follow them and stop them.
They need to just skip forward a few years with a new story.
This is probably why whatever the next Half Life game will ret-con a lot of stuff. Gordon could end up in a Gman stasis or something, show up years later. I don't expect them to but Valve could go so far as to ret-con everything after Half Life 2's original ending.

If Half-Life 3 is ever made and released, it won't be worth all the hype it's gotten (it's gotten so much it's near impossible for it to meet the high expectations). Knowing this makes the time spent waiting on it a little better, in the sense that the pressure's off and I can focus on other Valve games that will actually exist and be good. Like Dota 3.

They don't need to start the sequel chronologically right after Episode 2.
It's all speculation at this point. Half Life 3 could star new characters for all we know.

Episode 2 stars with you waking in a train car and meeting up with Alyx as you exit.
To the Stasis guys: Why would the Vortigaunts stop preventing G-Man from touching Gordon and Alyx when they only stopped doing that for healing her?
I mean it's not necessary to leave all characters out, there's Barney, Kleiner, that other scientist, and whatever other characters they plan to introduce (like the deaf character Gabe once talked about).
The starting point for HL3 is only as bad as Valve makes it to be.

Also, is Episode 3 scrapped now just for Half Life 3? I've seen people just gradually migrate over to Half Life 3 being a sequel rather than the third episode. Did I forget/miss something along the way?
Dude it's Valve, they are master storytellers. If they release HL3 someday I'm sure they have a professionally written story that doesn't do something just of the sake of it. They actually give a shit.
