Retro could have created a game that made Nintendo relevant to the current gaming atmosphere.

Instead, Nintendo put them on yet another colorful platformer -- a genre the Wii U is already drowning in, and yet isn't really benefiting from.

Don't get me wrong, the game will most likely be great, but a more "on-trend" style game from Retro would have likely been great, too, and would have done a lot more for Nintendo long-term. In that sense, Tropical Freeze is a complete waste.

Ding ding ding. Well it is unwanted by me since I didn't like DKCR and am burned out on 2D platformers for the time being (especially when considering my VC collection).

Metroid seems like it is getting a hiatus after the Other M backlash, and I guess people were hoping Retro would come in and save it. Personally speaking I'm fine with another DKC game, but some people seemed like they were quite ready to drop money on a Wii U to play Retro's next game until it turned out to be DKC. I maintain though, that in the overall scheme of things a new IP or Metroid wouldn't have made a ripple and people are just venting about it here.

I guess I'm not upset so much as I feel Nintendo blew yet another one of their chances. Nintendo has a half dozen divisions that can make a good Donkey Kong game, but they only have one division that excels at first person shooter/adventures.

I disagree almost completely, at least outside of the short-term. DKCR2 is the better short-term decision since it will most likely sell more than other games Retro could be making, but long-term it is terrible as it will be selling to the same crowd that bought a Wii U already or really just needed a 7th 2D platformer to convince to jump in (and a small number of DCKR fanatics who will buy a console for that game). Somebody who will buy a Wii U for Retro's major western AAA game, X, maybe Zelda, maybe Smash, and say a few other tag along 3rd party games will likely pick up Mario, MK, and some other games. People buying DKCR2 soon will have already purchased them. Also, most people aren't going to buy more than a few 2D platformers, so in the future to the extent DKCR2 is better/more popular it will simply be taking a sale away from one of the other of the cornucopia of 2D platformers on the system.

Further, what Nintendo needs to do now more than anything else is sell consoles, sell consoles, sell consoles. We already know how well having almost nothing but a plethora fo the best 2D platforming games today sells a console. *looks at Wii U sales* Not very well.

40ms WiFi lag would kill you ten times over in a game like Donkey Kong. I don't think we'll ever see a precision platformer with online functionalities. Maybe if the next DKC is on the moon and controls like Little Big Planet...

On one hand, because the Wii U gets so few games, every new game gets scrutinized with "Is this the game the Wii U needs right now!?". Looking at in the context, would Retro had been better served creating the kind of Western action game with an aesthetic and style that Nintendo's Japanese teams don't do? After this year's Rayman, Sonic, 2D and 3D Marios, did they need to add another mascot platformer to the ranks so soon? And one that looks like an upressed Wii game at that?

On the other hand, I must prefer DKC to the MP trilogy, and DKCR was one of my favorite games of the generation. A sequel, in HD, with normal controls and a brand new David Wise soundtrack sounds like a dream to me. I'm pretty hyped about it, personally.

Way I see it, its kinda like my relationship with Valve. Do I want them to make Half-Life 3? Goddamn right I do, I need some closure here, mothafucka. But if their passion lies towards L4D and Portal and DOTA2, and those games are very good in own right, well, I can't complain too much about that, even if something like DOTA2 doesn't appeal to me. They maintained a level of quality rarely seen from any developer to dabble in that many games this generation; no doubt in my mind that if(AND WHEN) HL3 comes out, it will not only be because they want to make it, but it will also be very good.

If this is what Retro wanted to do and its very good, I'll take it, gladly. Maybe not the best choice in the current context of the Wii U, though.

I definitely agree on at least the console owner / user end it would have been better to ignore DK for now simply because of all the other Nintendo developed platformers already on the system. I don't necessarily believe that a Metroid game or new IP would have sold a meaningful number of new consoles, the exact same goes for DK. No matter Retro's game, I'm sure (unless the new IP was an unforseen masterpiece with the public) it wouldn't have had a big monetary effect on the system overall, and at that point it is simply how many copies they can sell of the game they make.

I don't care if Nintendo shits out a dozen "Fucking Donkey Kong" games per year. I do care that basically the ONLY 1st party studio they have, capable of making games such as Metroid Prime (not another Metroid Prime per se), but games that are sorely lacking on Wii U, has been wasting its time on it, while they could have easily picked one of their many other internal studio's to do another DKC. Goodfeel is not even a first party, but they made Epic Yarn and now Yoshi's Yarn. People that think Retro was the only studio capable of making a good Donkey Kong game, need to wake up and play Jungle Beat. Especially after Retro did a good job on their first DKC, another studio could have stepped in and continue on the groundworks Retro laid out with the "first" one.

THAT is what's bothering me, that's why indeed i will say Fucking Donkey Kong, even if it's a good game. This isn't Zelda, or (3D) Mario, it's an action platformer. While nice, it's not what i want Retro to be "wasting their time" with.

Also people making the claim that Nintendo was just "being smart" since DKCR was a huge hit (saleswise) while Metroid Prime barely sold a million (on average over the 3 games?). They are also forgetting the casual audience that bought the Wii which is now obviously not buying a WiiU. Case in point: NSMBU did not move systems and is not a chart topper on Wii U, while it sold many more copies than DKCR on Wii, a game in the same genre. If the casual audience is there, DKC will sell more. If the casual gamer is not on board, DKC will not outshine a game like Metroid Prime that much.

Also... does it really take 3 to 4 years to make another DKC? When did the Wii game release? When did they finish? I know Retro isn't a 300 people studio, but last i checked, they weren't reduced to single digits either. Yeah, hyperbole, but whatever.

Pretty sure NSMBU is the highest selling game for the system, besides maybe Nintendo Land, and 9/10 customers at my store buying a Wii U pass all the other bundles up for the NSMBU/NSLU bundle. I'd say it moves systems and is the Wii U's only chart topper, for now. Hopefully.

lol

this is not what i meant. If anything, it proves my point. You do know Wii U has been selling like crap the past 11 months, yeah? 2D Mario has not shifted any systems. I was talking about gaming charts in general, not Wii U charts alone. And Mario being the best selling game, is because the first 6 months, the line-up consisted of rushed, late ports, of games easily available on other consoles for a fraction of the price. The BUNDLE (which is not the same thing as a system seller) is selling, because it's economically the best Wii U deal you can get (2 games, on disc, best price) and there has been a streak of good games coming out the past months.

It's not because 30 million people wanted to buy the game because they owned the system, that they will buy the system to own the game.

Wii: Was woefully underpowered and developers could not easily port assets to multi-plat titles and had to create games from scratch, even if apart of a series. Big middle finger to third parties. But hey, it made Nintendo money though.

Wii U: Woefully underpowered. Only cross-gen titles will have easily ported over assets. Poor online implementation, poor storage solution. Middle finger to third parties.

Add to this their insistence on creating games that do not cater to the western male demographic and you have the Wii U situation. DKCRTF is a sign of everything wrong with Nintendo.

They have a wester development studio and they have them make a 2D platformer, despite knowing full well they had a 2D Mario for launch, Rayman Legends close behind (eventually delayed), and Yarn Yoshi. Seeing that their plate for platformers is full, they fucking pile on more. And they wonder why their sales are in the gutter.

I love now that this image has been made, loads of people are quoting it on every negative Wii U post, lol. I forget how many times i have seen this today.

i think the point is that NSMBU is not moving the system like Wii Sports moved the first Wii or old SMB games moved NES and SNES consoles.

NSMBU is moving Wii U consoles but the sales are so low that it isn't enough. the game had a 2 million LTD early this year but that's abysmal compared to NSMBW which had 2m on launch day.

If anything you should cut out the middle man and get straight to the console chart. I mean, that's what everybody wants to point out right, the increasingly eroding Nintendo console sales, outside the lightning in a bottle, gigantic cultural phenomena that was the Wii.

I mean, theoretically, the next console could once again find some huge gimmick that appeals to hundreds of millions of people, but chances are we're looking at more Gamecubes in the future than Wiis.

For me it's the fact that 2D platformers are a dime a dozen these days, and in my opinion Nintendo isn't even making the best ones anymore. (My favourite these past years is Rayman Legends).

I bought and played Donkey Kong Returns on Wii, and although it was a fun game I frankly found it way too frustrating. Maybe I suck at 2D games, but Legends shows us there is a better way to make a game challenging than limiting lives and having few checkpoints.

Meaning: Give checkpoints all the f***** time. A challenge doesn't become more rewarding if you have to do parts that you've already mastered again. And lives are a thing of the past.

The second part is the fact that Wii U still really needs a killer app. Retro could be the studio to deliver that, and another Donkey Kong is not what Nintendo needs right now.

An epic, full scale beatiful looking game that utilizes the Gamepad in exciting ways is what is needed, sooner rather than later. This could EASILY be a new Metroid Prime (the Wii U Gamepad almost seems to be made for scanning stuff), or retro could make a totally new IP.

So yeah. It also worries me somewhat that a 2D platformer together with a problebably iterary (although awesome) Super Smash is supposed to save Wii U's ass in 2014. I have my doubts.

We shouldn't draw conclusions though. Maybe Retro only devotes a smaller team to Donkey, and is in secret developing another game. Maybe they've expanded.

I don't want. To be fair I've never cared for the Donkey Kong Country series. They're platformers that IMHO are more based on replaying levels and memorizing them. Instead of a platformer like say Mario, where simply based on skill you can get through a level, and you don't have to memorize it. They're really well made games, just not the style of platformer that gels with me.

So I'd rather see them doing something else. I'd be fine if there was never another Donkey Kong Country game. I'm not saying that should be the case, because others like it, but I wouldn't be upset if that was the case.

I really hope their next game isn't a 3rd Donkey Kong.

It'll be funny when this DKC sells less than Metroid Prime on the GC...

"Nintendo would only focus on their highest selling titles if they were to go third party, because there'd be no need to build a userbase." Isn't that what people say all the time? And yet we're watching that happening on the Wii U even while they stay a first party, and it's not working at all for them so far.

The WiiU graph is funny. We all know the console is failing, but a fair comparison would just show each console's first year or something (and WiiU would probably still be last).

Also, I don't get the hate on 2D platformers when the other next gen consoles launched with 2 and 3 FPS (unless I'm forgetting some) and are already hyping 3 more FPS games for next year (Destiny, Titanfall, Halo) yet nobody complains as much. And the WiiU only has 1 2D platformer made by Nintendo so far...

I wouldn't say "unwanted", I'd say it's a bit disappointing though. At least for me.

I mean, they're a gifted studio, but have fallen into sequel traps. First Metroid Prime, and now Donkey Kong. Granted, with Metroid Prime at least that offered up variety in Nintendo's first party lineup. How many 2.5D platforms are Nintendo going to pump out every year? While they've only ever had 3 FPS Adventure games.

I'd rather them be doing Metroid Prime or something else to diversify Nintendo's lineup. Like see if they could re-invent F-Zero or do a new IP in a genre Nintendo lacks in.
