Now we just need iPod earbuds that are tangle-resistant.

The next version of the USB connector will accept the plug either way up, the USB 3.0 Promoter Group said Tuesday.

The USB Type-C connector, initially intended for USB 3.1 and 2.0 devices, will be a complete redesign, the group said. It will be similar in size to the USB 2.0 Micro-B plug found on most modern cellphones, and will support scalable power charging. In comparison, the USB 3.0 Micro-B plug is wider than that for USB 2.0 devices.

The Type-C specification is up for industry review in the first quarter of 2014 and a final specification is expected to be published by the middle of next year. Participants in the review process will be sent a copy of the 0.7 draft of the connector specification.

Avoiding jumping on the Apple 'jerk, you really notice going from using a lightning plug to a regular usb.

Granted I don't plug things in other than to charge but I'll be damned if I wasn't hella annoyed that the normal usb plug didn't go in right the first time.

Like, it's 20-fucking-13 this shouldn't have been an issue for the past decade or so.

No more 99/1 50/50 chance of plugging it in wrong.

I figured this out one day. Know the little piece that connects both the wires together? Move that all the way up near the buds and connect. Next, put the buds in your pocket FIRST, then put the rest of the wire in. When you pull them out by the wire they should be untangled, or at least not a mess.

Back on topic, being able to flip both ways seems good, but it sounds like it might be a bit thin to just fumble around and find in the back of the pc with.

An easier way is that you can feel the engravings with your thumb when you have the right side.

Of course that never helps when you don't know which side the switch is positioned. Like with PC's and vertical USB slots. :\

So are people going to flip their shit cause they have to use adapters on existing equipment like they did when Apple changed their connectors? Doubt it...

I'll say. such a simple feature and I was so happy when they added it to the MS surface.

Then I was disappointed because trying to plug in the power supply to an MS surface is fucking HARDER than plugging in 3 usb cables at once in the dark. WTF MS.

This is a bit less useful on the micro USB size because I imagine most people know which way it plugs into their phone/device, and it's obvious which way round the plug currently is because you can see it. neither of these things are really true with the phat USB slots.

You'd need another connector for ground. And those jacks and plugs have tons of problems ranging from signal degradation to cable stress to low tolerance for variation.
Hell, I've never gotten one of the mini jack / optical combination shits to work.
