There's much celebration to be had at Sony HQ right now....PS4 is outpacing PS1, PS2, and PS3 at this time.

It's a whopper

I honestly bought the console just because of how awesome the hardware and OS is, without any games wanted (except playing Resogun).

Now ensure the console continues to get games and improving media capabilities so that continues Sony.

PS4 going beast mode. The only question is if these sales are front loaded or not. The next 5-6 months will be telling.

I think they've been resting on their laurels lately. They need to keep the agressive publicity, they have an advantage, they should use it. They are doing well, but they could do much better, not only in sales (I know, limited by supply constraints) but in mindshare.

PS4 is bright green, WiiU 5th quarter is Nitnendo's PROJECTION [not real numbers]

I don't think that they could be doing all that much better in sales. They're still experiencing some major supply issues. With that said, they've been indicating that they're going to make another big push at GDC.

25 million units for the PS2 is completely insane, plus the fact that the PS4 has a realistic chance to beat it is amazing.

Oh god.., I wish I can find that developer survey where almost every developer predicted MS Durango would dominate straight out the gate.

Yeah, it's entirely possible (and I'm sure this is the narrative the CONSOLES/GAMING IS DOOMED crowd is going to adopt) that sales will drop off after the hardcore/early adopter crowd gets their consoles. Unlikely, but possible.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Can you really call it "outpacing" when you're comparing global PS4 sales to PS2 sales in a single territory? Especially when you're seeing massive leaps as soon as the PS2 was released in other territories.

Don't get me wrong, it's clear that the system's doing well, but let's not jump the gun.

It's great. But I still wonder about the sales numbers, had the xbone not reversed the policies. PS4 Would have easily clocked 6.5 million.

I'm not sure that it could've hit that in the same time period. The supply problems seem to be the main issue. Many European countries are still waiting to be able to buy units. Someone tweeted Yoshida not too long ago and told him that they've been told that you won't be able to get one in France until some time in March unless you pre-ordered

Sony has done so much exactly right with the handling of the ps4 it's almost scary.

Yep. The console market was hungry for new modern hardware. Gaming hardware focused on gaming content. Nintendo missed their chance when they released the WiiU, an underpowered console with a tablet gimmick that no one really wanted coupled with pathetic marketing. Thus sales languished. Microsoft created a modern console right alongside Sony's PS4, except that it's slightly less powerful but costs $100 extra. With those two single differences in mind, it's no wonder why the PS4 is doing so phenomenally well. Sony simply gave the target demographic what they wanted: a powerful new console at a great price. With both Nintendo and Microsoft, well that just wasn't either of their goals.

Sony deserves all the success they will be getting this gen. They have earned it, and both MS and Nintendo should learn from it.

Of course. But they make people desire a PS4 and only a PS4, that's what I meant with mindshare.

Looks like ps3 had a good start too, then it sank shortly after. Not that Sony shouldn't be commended for what they've accomplished, but I'm expecting a big drop off just like with the Xbone.

I'd say PS4 will be ahead at the 13 month mark but there's no way they'll move an additional 9 million between December 15, 2014 and May 14, 2015 to keep pace.

Personally, I think if they're north of 20 million by 2 years, they're ecstatic over at Sony HQ. Supply/manufacturing improvements has allowed there to be more at the start, but we'll have to see what demand is once everything settles. It's still a $400 machine.

Pretty astonishing looking back at the PSOne and how long it took it to reach 10 million.

Yay graphs
