First FFXIII News? Hmmmm #1

First "solid" FFXIII details? According to RESET, their Japanese sources claim that FFXIII "revolves around the number 13, and everything that it symbolizes". As mentioned before, Production Studio 1 (Division 1- run by FFVI/VII/VIII/X's Yoshinori Kitase) is working on it, with rumors abound of an unveiling somewhere around E3 2006.

E3 '06, or 'around' E3, seems kind of early for an unveiling, but then again, FFX was first shown at the Square Millenium Conference (along with FFIX and XI) in Jan. 2000... 3 months (?) before PS2's Japanese launch. Unfortunately, after that initial gameplay demo (Tidus with brown hair ), the game went on almost a full year media-blackout until after FFIX launched in almost every territory.
Personally, I'd be very surprised if Square-Enix shows anything significant prior to FFXII being released in the US and Europe, but you never know. This is a very different company than the one in 2000.

Knowing how much of a 'symbolic/thematic' whore Kitase is, I'm very interested if this "13" idea is real. I can't even begin to think how many things the number really represents, besides bad luck. :)

A FFXIII showing at E3 would be massive for PS3 at such an important time. Maybe, just maybe, FFXIII in '07 (along with MGS4 and possibly GTA4, not to mention Halo3 for 360)? That would be massive, echoing 2001.

Sounds about right. Square has always been known to head off the new generation with a FF trailer/tech demo that blows away everyone and give a glimpse of the true-next generation evolvement of rpgs...but then the game doesn't come out until 2-3 years later ^^;

Because kitase IMO is the best director when it comes to RPGs. I dont want another FF12 debacle where someone who cant handle the pressure is in charge of everything. I've loved Kitase's games so this is great news.

FFXII is releasing in March. There's no reason why they can't have a teaser trailer right after it at E3 in May.

For the love of gawd I hope they change the character designs and design motifs.

FFX, FFX-2, and FFXII just "bleed" together too much with the whole 90210-ish characters and the "tropical" colors thing. Ugh.

FFX footage and FFXI concept designs before FFIX is released?

Yeah, it happened 6 months before FFIX was released in Japan.

Exactly. I love Matsuno's work, but Kitase is an excellent director when it comes to traditional rpgs. FFX did everything an FF should considering the technology restrainments (no overworld map). If FFXIII is as big of leap as FFX was from VII-IX, it should be mind-blowing once again.

Undoubtedly. The 360 is DOA in Japan and the Rev's design won't lend itself well to a port.

Yep. Kitase is an excellent director. The dude knows how to make well done stuff. Kitase > Sakaguchi

I just hope they keep some of the improvements Matusno's doing to FF...like that supposedly huge open world?

I imagine the open world will be standard from here on out. With FFX they probably didn't have the time or the knowledge of PS2's architecture to pull it off completely- it seemed like, from the Millenium Conference demo, they were headed in that direction (anyone remember the map screen you could pull up- and being able to log onto PlayOnline on the fly and download tips/maps/etc?). Not to mention FFX's plot was organized to flow along a linear path. It was a pilgrimage, afterall. :)

??? Shit, hook a brother up, I don't know what you're talking about!

Hopefully the don't put the random battle back in either...Personally what I'm hoping for is an evolution of the FFX-2 battle system but in an open enviroment with multiplayer capabilities. Holy fuck.

It doesn't sell THAT much better (read: 3x) that they can outrule Japanese sales completely. Final Fantasy games are multi-million sellers in every region, but the Xbox360 is NEVER going to be a multi-million userbase machine in Japan. That alone rules out any 360 non-spinoff, non-MMORPG FF game. Forever. Face it, Square Enix isn't going to waste their time on a console which is a laughing stock in their own country.

sounds right. X360 is going to bomb in Japan no matter what MS does, not even Lost Odyssey or Blue Dragon can save it.

I dunno, FFX moved about 5 million outside Japan (compared to 2.5 million inside). I still think there's enough merit for a multiplatform release, though it could just as easily remain on PS3 exclusively.

KH could easily move to multiple machines too I think... DQ seems like the only biggie to definitely remain exclsuive, thanks to it's inability to reach a wide foreign market.

To be honest, I don't see the 360's Western userbase making the game a million seller anyway.

ToS sold more only in Japan than everywhere else combined. But you think there is one 'tales of' coming for Xbox360.

So....why can't MS pay S-E for FF too? :)

Well, that could happen too... but at this point I don't think either MS or Sony are interested in a bidding war for Final Fantasy. Sony's ensured them anyway and MS is getting a better deal out of MistWalker.
