I've been watching GameSpot's direct-feed footage, and I finally came to the conclusion with proof that the footage we saw by GameXplain and Shacknews is actually even now an outdated build compared to the show floor demo at E3. I present the following:

First the pre-E3 demo, video by Shacknews, then, the E3 show floor demo as shown by GameSpot:

Now I don't expect to be a magical difference in that all the crud we saw before being all fixed, but the evidence is there that they already have an updated version that was shown at the show floor.

My question:

WHY?!

Why did Sega release that footage if it was already outdated, and we're talking mere days prior to E3. Also I think the speed stage that had that horrendously broken camera (which correct me if I'm wrong wasn't shown on the show floor, might be wrong as I haven't seen every bit of footage, just the direct-feed ones) was WAY too early to be shown. Example of gameplay aside, showcasing such evidently unpolished work only works against it.

In my opinion Sega should've axed the early footage and just given us what we got on the show floor. naturally again it's not going to turn everyone's opinion around, but the fact the visuals looked so BLAH in said footage when it looked much nicer in the debut trailer in the first place, was a really questionable tactic when an already updated build was going to be present in like less than a week.

Thoughts?

Like lipstick on a pig.

The main concern with that footage was that the gameplay looks atrocious. But yes, the lighting looks vastly improved in the second set of shots. Who knows? Sometimes these things come right down to the wire.

This is the only real problem I have with the game. Since I'm not a huge Sonic fan to begin with, I'm ok with this game not feeling like a traditional Sonic experience, but the constant chatter between the characters is extremely annoying to me.

Yep. It looks better now, cool. The gameplay still looks awful and the constant babbling of the characters is obnoxious.

Awful, or just not like what Sonic's "supposed to be"? Awful as a concept, or buggy as hell build? Please elaborate.

Once again - this is a children's game, based on a children's show, aimed at children.

I don't know people are getting so worked up about it. It's not like they said "And here's Sonic 5!"

Its depressing as Sonic Generations was to me great fun and probably the sole good Sonic time I've had in 10+ years.

Back to shit we go apparently.

Sonic got the Pac Man and the Ghostly Adventures treatment.

Sonic Team either needs to save their IP or just retire him to cameos.

They got a bunch of ex-Naughty Dog and Insomniac people and made an action-platformer in the vein of their company's. It just... Doesn't look remarkable at all, nor does it look like a Sonic game.

It might still be a good game, but there's nothing notable about it that I can see.

I'm gonna give this game a chance, but I'm not gonna expect a Sonic game, just an adventure platformer with a Sonic skin.

I was hoping we'd get to see Sonic Team's next mainline Sonic game at E3.

This isn't even a game by Sonic Team, it's a separate ''Western'' Sonic series that doesn't have anything to do with the main Sonic series.

Let's wait for Sonic Team's next game first before we call Sonic shitty again.

If they get rid of the annoying dialogue, the game might be decent, though probably unremarkable. It doesn't really look that bad, just simplistic and a tad antiquated.

I'm not the target consumer with this though . Game's aimed at children, and Lost World was pretty good.

Why do some people have a problem with the dialogue? Keep in mind the audience for this game; it's not out of place, heck it's like the stuff in Pac-man & The Ghostly Adventures, you know, a show/game series that shares this audience! Besides, Dave Polsky is working on the writing for the show, and apparently some of the writing for the game as well. I have to say his stuff can be quite solid at times.

Since Colors Sonic talking hasn't been that bad. It shits on anything that Sonic has ever talked in though. I think Colors was win he got the new voice? So yeah, that marks the point where they tried getting all Saturday morning cartoony.

Anything before was terrible.

Mute Sonic is still duh bess.

Gameplay-wise looks to be nothing special, not bad, not good, but I like the talking and cutscenes.

It reminds me of the old Sonic Shows/Movie, and even things such as ReBoot or Bump in the Night.

I may pick this up down the road.

Edit: This game desperately needs fight music or something, lol

Honestly the only differences I can see is the addition of some slight lighting (where before there was none) and higher gamma in the new build.

And the bad visuals were only one of the many problems with the game. The gameplay looks mediocre and the constant voice quips remind me of a bad iOS game. There is much more work required than what will be given for the dev team.

Kind of feel bad saying that since the dev team is made up of talented individuals.

But even then it doesn't make sense, Sonic 3D have been vastly different among themselves. And by the way, Rise of Lyric is very Unleashed-y as for the gameplay, mixing fast running sections with slowpaced, hacknslash/platforming sections which involve the use of some kind of grip (that electric lazo is used in the same way as Werehog's arms)

The only reason people are comparing this to Sony platformers is because of who is developing the game.

EDIT: I don't get why Colours is always forgotten, despite being wonderful and better than Generations

Purely Sonic? The PC builds of Generations and ASRT.

Outside of Sonic? There are quite a lot of good modern Sega games.

I've noticed with the game and cartoon that Sonic's voice sounds much better than the previous games.

Roger Craig Smith clearly getting better voice directing.

I'll tell you a secret... It's NOT the graphics that is the big issue. It's the game mechanic and level design that is the big issue.. it's straight out from the PS2/Dreamcast era of gaming which is approximately 12-13yrs ago.

Colors really was a great game. I love Generations but now that time has passed I think I can say that I had more fun overall with Colors.
And while it's not entirely a Sonic game, Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed trumps even most of the Mario Kart games that were out at the time. Sonic had a pretty damn solid few years.
Lost World... Well, it's not a bad game, and there were moments where it was great. But i think it was a markedly worse game than the previous several main Sonic titles.
I'm really hoping Sonic Boom will at least turn out to be one of the better generic colorful character action platformers out there at least. I can't say things are looking too good though.

I'll never understand why people try to use "last gen gameplay" as a negative. If you take a look at many genres a lot of the older games actually has better gameplay mechanics. You'll see this in many fighting games and 2D platformers.

Find another way to trash the game because saying a game came out of the "PS2/Dreamcast" era doesn't say anything. It hints towards better gameplay more so than bad gameplay.

Sonic Boom strikes me as a terrible Sonic game. Hell, it isn't even a good Ratchet and Clank game. Sonic Team is still working on a main title to be released next year. I really hope it's as good as Sonic Generations was.
