So the US release was almost a year and a half after Japan? It's like Nintendo thought the US was Europe back then.

Not bad for a dead market, the US was lucky to get it at all. Back in Feb 1986 the NES revolution was just starting out outside of New York. Gaming was still dead in the US.

I still vividly remember seeing the game for the first time. I was at a sleepover birthday party and one of my friends brought it, or the birthday boy got it for his birthday - that I don't remember. But we loaded it up and watched in awe as the title screen came up and the story started scrolling by. Then the list of weapons and items. Every kid in that room knew we were witnessing something special and I'm pretty sure we all went out and got our own copies. My oldest sister even got hooked on the game, and she really hasn't been into games before or since.
