Something people have set impossibly high expectations for.
I'm also on the Pokken train. I am curious about the multiple trademarks. What's the difference between Pokken Fighters and Pokken Tournament? Wii U/3DS versions? Unsure about what to call it? Or will it have the repetitive name Pokken Fighters: Pokken Tournament?
Something people have set impossibly high expectations for.
Last year, two trademarks cropped up in Japan, America and earlier this year, Europe. These were for Pokkén, Pokkén Tournament and Pokkén Fighters.
On the first page, that gif of Lucario and Blazken about to fight in 3D.
People are hoping its that.
Poke Warriors. Tecmo Koei fillin out that library
Pokemon fighting game. Trademark showed up a while ago, and I believe a former Tekken lead has been reported to be working with Nintendo.

Why "project" and no "game" mention?
Why do you say this?
Oh. Must have missed that.
And fighting game as in an actual fighting game (like Naruto, DBZ, etc)? Or more in the lines of Pokemon Stadium?
Probably becuase its way to early in its development stages and they dont want people to think its coming out any time soon. Or maybe its just to keep it a secret, who knows...
Why "project" and no "game" mention?
At the end of a Pokémon Black 2 & White 2 trailer being aired in Japan, a teaser cropped up, being shared around the internet through Twitter, at the end and has stated that the next big news regarding Pokémon will be revealed on January 8th 2013. It's currently unknown what this news is, whether it's related to current games, such as a new WiFi event or if it's a new game reveal. We'll be sure to post the new information, whatever it is, as soon as it is revealed

My prediction, as of now:
"Pokken Fighters" is an NFC figure branding, either a sub-brand of amiibo, or an independent thing TPC made up on its own.
"Pokken Tournament" will be the actual game, most likely on wiiu for the built-in NFC sensor. A 3ds version may launch with the official Nintendo NFC peripheral for the 3ds when that eventually happens.
EDIT: And the announcement saying "project," not "game" would be inclusive to showing off NFC toys.
Possibly more like tekken.

If it's any kind of Wii U pokemon game, it's gonna be in the running for lowest selling pokemon game of all time. Do we know which game currently holds that record? Maybe the ds nobunaga crossover or the figurine fighting Wii U game?

In all seriouness I believe Pokemon can save the Wii U.
They're never gonna give you all regions at once when they can make you buy them one at a time, annually, over a whole generation.

Really hoping this turns out to be Pokken. Pokemon has such potential for a fighting game roster.
and this is just using strictly fighting types! (and Pikachu).

And it's still missing a few fighters, like Poliwrath, Hitmontop, and Gallade. Make legendaries bosses, like Meloetta and Fist Plate Arceus, and I would totally buy a Wii U ASAP!

can't bring out Pokken with Smash4 needing PR is my reason why it won't be Pokken

Eh. At E3, which had such a huge focus on Smash, sure, that'd be a good reason not to announce it. But as part of it's own announcement special? I don't think that'd detract much from Smash. ESPECIALLY since it's almost certainly gonna be a 2015 title, and Smash will be out worldwide before then. They announce it now, in between news for Smash Bros., and then let things get quiet again until after Smash 4 is out, and it won't detract at all from Smash.
