Some new Devil May Cry 4 gameplay details. #1

DMC3 SE's website had a link to comments from developer blogs. Bingo Morsashi and Kobayashi for one. As well as statements from Itsuno on the official column. This is the best bablefish got me, so I tried my best to make sense out of it. I also summarized what the Capcom Game Magazine that came out not too long ago and got a better translation of those (most will recall the "minumum bar" comment from that).

Anyway:

1) Itsuno mentioned more accessible freedom with air-combat. DMC3 pushed the boundaries on ground-based twitch based combat, so the development team is looking to ways to expand the combat system to the air. And this isn't referring to having a few air-based attacks here and there. They want to advanced the combat system to the flight based mechanics, maybe putting more primary focus for Dante's demon form) Hopefully something ZOE2-ish.

2)
The next thing mentioned is that not only can you level up Dante in a set path (which at this point, is commonplace in action games), but you can assign certain attacks to whatever button input, commands you'd like. For those that forgot, on the Capcom Magazine they released in Japan (I assume it was with Famitsu) Kobayashi mentioned in ease and option of control. To which, obviously assumed -- you can mix and match various inputs together for complete customization. You create your own style -- is what it seems they are getting at. Instead of selecting pre-determined ones.

3) He then talks about DMC3:SE and about Vergil. Saying he wanted Vergil to be harder to play with than Dante, but ultimately have a higher peak of tactical performence for those who master him. With the interview over at 1up, he also goes to say that inclusions of Vergil, BP, were things they wanted to put in the PS2 ver., but development time prevented so -- >.> Revolution for the win AMIRITE?

A few recap statements Itsuno made earlier (yes, these were posted before):

4) DMC4 will be a hard game. It will not be easier, but they will make sure the game is easier to get into and not so hard at first as DMC3 was.

5) DMC4 will have more cutscenes, story, combat, environments, music, events than previous DMC's put together. Eventually to say (and I quote from Itsuno) that "in that regard, DMC4 will be a powered up DMC3."

6) No release date or idea / period known, but I quote Kobayashi "we have a long way to go" (hello 2007) but at the same time the development team has stated that "development is well underway."

7) Kobayashi says DMC4 will look "at minimum" as the TGS trailer in real-time.

8) Itsuno says "we demand / expect a lot from the PS3" and "we are very excited at what we can accomplish with it."

9) Thanks to Srider for this little nugget of information, but Capcom will have a "special report" on DMC4 soon. I don't WHAT THE FUCK that means but hey, sounds good to me.

10) The lead character designer and artist (seemingly GAF is obsessed with Dante's look, he's gone from Quazi, to Santa, to Tom Cruise) is the guy who did the character designs and artwork for Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter and Demento

How about a good camera system, no load times, and no "rooms". Constant action and enemy killing, none of this entering an area, clearing the handful of enemies, and advancing.

Oh, and no more CRAPPY JAPPY "puzzles".

Too much customization could be a bad thing (see: Onimusha Dawn of Dreams). But I'm getting more of a "freedom of choice" thing, moreso than a "diarrehea of crap to allocate" type of customization. So that's a good thing.

Well, DMC is an action game. When Capcom attempted to give the game "some breathing / relaxtion" in terms of it's action a little thing called DMC2 came out.

Full, head-on, unrelenting, constant stylish action FTW!

Speaking of? Isn't your favorite action game from Capcom PN03 Take out Bandit? As I recall, that game had a shit load of button mashy action, sometimes more than even I could handle.

if the graphics of DMC4 is as good TGS trailer, then i will be so impressed. because Dante's face and hair look so much better than snake in MGS4.

but then again. from capcom statment, it look like they didn't have the final ps3 kit by the time they wrote this. [ demanding/expecting alot from ps3 ] statment

so basicly they are shooting high based on the specs of ps3 on paper. when it comes to the real thing. i doubt it will have this animation of dante face from the trailer in the final game.

This just in -- but rumor has it Devil May Cry is an action game...I could be wrong though.

Built on the broke ass Resident Evil engine.

The game would be much stronger if it abandoned the whole area concept carried over from RE. It limits my enjoyment of the series knowing that if I want to, I can just leave an area to avoid the combat. Knowing there will always be the same number of enemies in a room.

Large freakin' areas and no load times.

Make it more of a free roaming action game, and less of a game built on the RE engine. And by RE engine, I'm referring to the crap cameras and "rooms" involving load time out the wazoo; not the actual combat.

Oh and crappy jappy "puzzles". No more wasting an hour of my time because I didn't walk over to a window and press the action button. :P

No. Unlike yourself, P.N.03 doesn't define my persona. That credit goes to Shantae. :P

My favorite Capcom game is still Street Fighter 2, followed by Final Fight. ;)

They aren't shooting high since if you notice they say that TGS trailer is the lowest quality DMC4 will be at, not the highest.

but the statment saying they are demanding/expecting alot from the ps3 tells you they really didnt go much into the ps3 kit by the time they wrote this.

I hope there are SOME limitations to how we map abilities. I do like the ability to map abilities to maybe the right stick, but if I map some crap to the start button by mistake, and I can no longer get to the option screen to remap, then that would be retarded.

Obviously that wouldn't happen, as its an extreme example. You get the drift, though. :P

They say after that "we're very excited at what we can accomplish with it". So it sounds like they already have a good idea of what they can do, and now the low bar is set at that TGS trailer.

It'd seem only natural for somebody at Capcom to say -- that was the look we got at the TGS trailer -- (which Kobayashi admitted was a mix of real time and not 'so real-time'), and now let's achieve it fully. And I guess somewhere down the road they felt that not only could they achieve the TGS trailer, (at 60 frames per second, this IS DMC mind you) but surpass it. But given the way Dead Rising and Lost Planet looks, and DMC4 is exclusive "to what supposed to be" the strongest console hardware, it seems possible.

Taking some big bites Capcom, let's hope you can chew it.

Anyway I hope DMC4 doesn't go the have expansive environments with a bajallion enemies on screen trend. DMC is about stylish combat on a one-on-one basis (with 5 or 6 guys on the 'round). Not hacking and slashing a shit load of mindless rats in a never ending grassland region or some shit. It's about claustrophobic rooms in a fuckin castle with large difficult enemies...oh and FTW.

considering how MGS2, 3 on ps2 looked better than DMC12 and 3 [ graphics wise ]

i doubt the table will turn now. but... it doesnt really matter. dmc for ps3 ftw anyway

No. The DMC3:SE webpage has a column feature which they talk about DMC4. The rest is from 1up's interview, the magazine that Capcom released (with the scans) etc.

What I did get from that is the Vergil information about DMC3:SE, disregard that then, ooops.

Do you think RE5 trailer looked better than GRAW's realtime gameplay? I doubt many do, yourself included.

Now, if DMC4 doesnt look as good as it's trailer on the PS3, then I'd be worried.

You doubt many think that trailer looked better than GRAW? Uhh ok...You might want to take a look at that trailer again, specfically the main characters model. Not saying it couldn't be done, but you'd think if it was real time that Capcom would be jumping up and down screaming that it was.

oh and RE5 blow the shit out GRAW graphics and animation wise based on trailers we have seen.

First of all, I have no idea how GRAW could possibly make it into a thread about Devil May Cry 4. But even so, the game has been pretty much universally praised for its graphics, especially in recent showings.

On topic, I can't wait to see how DMC4 turns out. Part 3 was my first entry in the series, and I enjoyed it from start to finish. Excellent, fun controls (my #1 gameplay requirement), great graphics/animation, and plenty of challenge.

Imagine what happens when the trailers for such exclusive games come out. If a thread that has a few (in the grand scheme of things pretty much obvious additions to DMC4) tidbits causes so much shit...gets you thinking.

Like I said in another thread, I still think they should try to add some kind of character switching on the fly in the game. As it stands now DMC is turning into a fighting game inside of an action game, and tag fighting is a big feature in some fighting games now. Being able to launch someone the air with Dante and then tag someone else in to catch the enemy in the air would be awesome. I guess they could add balance to it by giving both characters the same energy bar.

that sounds cool, but problem with that is that I don't imagine Dante working with another person that's not part of his character he is cocky and arrogant loves to show off I really doubt he will work with someone else that can steal the spotlight from him.

Now if they introduce a characters that has a dog or a crow that helps him fight, now that is more feasible and will add uniqueness to that character.

Yeah, I think they'd add a little "chaos legion" summon / familiar system in the mix before "on the fly character switching"

With instant weapon switching, possibility of instant style switching -- eventually you come to a point where 'it's just too much.'

I've always said it, a good combat system is not indicitive of how many whiz-bang-ninja cool moves your main character can do -- rather it has to do with depth, twitch-based combat, balance, and structure if everything in totality (bosses, enemies, main character etc.). If they can do all that, it doesn't matter if the main character has two attacks, I'd still give that a nod before action game X with a bajallion moves but has stupid as fuck enemies and bosses. Balance is SO important in an action game and I think balance is what DMC3 by far does the best than any other title -- fighting games, action games -- I see them on the same level really.

Well said, and I am hoping they deliver all that they are promising. Really looking forward to 2007. Good thing too, because I probably won't have a PS3 before 2007 anyway.
