Meowgical Tower - Short game but fun, it's very well made the graphics and the music emulate very well the style from early Game Boys titles. What makes Meowgical Tower different than mostly Zelda clones is the fact that your weapons are the keys and levers you need to use to advance through the game and once you use them it's gone until you find another one.

4PM is a bit heavy-handed near the end and amateurish in production values although good voice acting, but it's worth playing if you're interested in a game with cool full body awareness and a short dramatic game about an alcoholic gal (screen is blurry throughout). 30 min long, there are a few choices at the end. Made a playthrough video of it.

When did this release? My contact with indie games has been in flux lately and I was looking forward to this one.

That's a bad link for Awe in the OP, here's the better link
http://oddly-shaped-pixels.itch.io/awe

Awe
Not much game here, but certainly an enjoyable meditative experience. Essentially you're presented with a revolving globe and by tapping different patterns of colors, you can spawn various environmental items - a tree here, a mountain there - thus offering new colors and new items to spawn. Each tile has its own musical tone, so your exploratory taps are accompanied by a gentle soundtrack of your design. Not many items in this jam build, but I definitely see the potential for a bigger game. An interesting feature is that you can play solo or with a random anonymous player.

Cavern Kings
Cavern Kings isn't coy about its inspirations. Risk of Rain, Super Crate Box, even a little Spelunky, the influences are clear but Cavern Kings doesn't feel like a ripoff or derivative. I lost an hour to the beta; this is a fun challenging action platformer with a lot of potential and promise.
In Cavern Kings, you have one destination: down. Armed with randomly selected ranged and melee weapons, you tunnel your way through the ground into increasingly difficult arenas, filled with enemies and hazards of all kinds. Collects gems and gold from crates and defeated enemies allow you to unlock chests, maybe granting you a new power up or a new weapon to the overall armory. Similar to Risk of Rain, power-ups stack, so an especially successful run might end with your guy able to triple jump, fire missiles at random, be protected by a shield, or countless other permutations. Take too long, and a massive grinder begins descending from above, forcing you to move on or die.
Gameplay is fast paced and frantic, as you desperately evade and shoot the enemies encroaching from all sides, blast flying worms out of the air, decimate the arena with TNT, jump over saw blades and spikes. Your arsenal is varied and satisfying to use, from the blade-throwing Sawdriver and Nailgun to the ground-pounding Kinetic Fist. Even the Shovel is an effective weapon; each feels different, requires different strategies, and the power-ups only allow for more diverse play styles.

Copy Kitty
This is a pretty interesting game, feels partially inspired by BLEED and Aces Wild. You get transported to a virtual world, where you face off against an array of varied enemies across levels and endless arenas. You're pretty acrobatic, able to dodge roll, double jump, perform powerful melee attacks. But your main ability is to be able to copy enemy attacks and combine their effects. There are dozens of projectiles type and countless combinations, each with their own unique name, Up to three attacks can be combined, so for example tornado + split + bounce unleashes an upward blast that fires splitting projectiles in all directions that ricochet around the level. Lightning + bomb + plasma fires a chaining explosive blast that destroys the environment. The combat is pure visual spectacle, as you fire your numerous screen-filling attacks while dodging your enemies' bullets, bombs, and rushes.

1. Cavern Kings
2. Copy Kitty
3. Awe

Awe - I think the best experience you can have on Awe is playing it online and having random strangers also trying to spawn various elements, from my personal experience after some time of frustrated tentatives I and my unknown partner started to take turns to create and try to unlock the last thing.

Edit: Boson X is released now. $2.99

Thanks so much for playing and for the kind words! We're always happy to see that people enjoyed what we put together :)

Roguelight - We can't deny that roguelikes (insert how much -likes do you want here) are in vogue among indie developers, Roguelight is one of these games with the interesting mechanic where you desnced downards a dungeon/cave/ and it becomes more and more dark, you use your arrows to kill the enemies and lit the lanterns they are your main source
of light though the arrows are very limited, you may find some inside the dungeons but it isn't guaranteed.

One of the best games I've played this month so far

Oh god, yes please. The first one really was something special, especiall in regard to the puzzle design.

From all the info they released about the sequel it looks like is going to be larger and more varied than the first game. I hope it sells well.

The first one sold amazingly well and was very well critically received. If they dont overprice it too heavily, I have no doubt about good sales. Speaking of that, did they announce the price already?

Doing it now! Murasaki Baby sounds fantastic though! I read the Eurogamer review yesterday but I haven't picked it up as yet - was waiting for Natural Doctrine. Anyway - that's off topic!

You guys only have Vitas? What about PS3? Would be cool to play online with the folks here

I had played the press demo. That was just a small corner store robbery. Any more impressions on the current game?

Unfortunate news about Spacebase, more ammo for the "Early Access is a scam" crowd. Well, happy i held off from purchasing. Game seemed interesting but I already had Prison Architect and RimWorld to keep me occupied

Roundabout releasing today, anyone checking that out?

I am a bit more sad about this than I thought I would be. Its kinda disappointing because I absolutely trusted in DF to keep that development up for more than a year. You cant make a full game in that genre within a year, simply not possible.

Bleh.

Actually I'm kind of conflicted in my opinion of companies like this getting into the whole Kickstarter/ Early Access arena. Double Fine certainly isn't Ubisoft but they aren't one or two guys working on Rain World and Catacombs Kids either. They should have the experience to know whether they can handle a project like this. Maybe if it was company sanctioned side-project - "oh these 5 guys are going to be working on Spacebase as a passion project while we continue dev on our other projects" - I wouldn't mind.

But DF seems to be spreading itself pretty thin between so many games and acting as a publisher now.

Indeed unfortunate news, the worst part is the people who put all the Early Access games in the same bin calling the program "a scam" and seem to conveniently forget the games that were successfully released from Early Access or games with constant updates, Endless Legend is releasing today and they did the Early Access totally right, getting feedback from the community, updating the game constantly, etc.

I think it's fine to be disappointed on a personal level but everything beyond that is just unwarranted, imo. You should know what you're getting into with Early Access.

By the same token, making generalisations about EA based on singular incidents is just ridiculous.

Anyone play Gang Beasts with two players? Worth it? Thinking of picking it up this weekend to play with the girlfriend, but I just think maybe the "fun" of the game is the chaos from having more than two players. Even if I had more people to play, which I don't, I don't have enough controllers anyway. So, would you people recommend Gang Beasts as a two player game?

I still like Double Fine but I will absolutely never support them on Kickstarter/Early Access/preorder ever again. They just aren't a good Early Access dev, if they really want to crowdfund stuff they need to take a look at how places like Larian (Divinity: Original Sin) and Hidden Path (Defense Grid 2) actually do it right. Just throwing your games up to let people play them early and then hardly updating them is a good way to burn good will quickly. Hack 'n' Slash got maybe 3 updates on its entire time on Early Access and that was just adding in workshop support and the last area.

I have been thinking about putting together some sort of crowd-sourced directory on highlighting devs who actually do Early Access right. There are so many great devs on Early Access who earnestly take feedback to make a better game, actively engage with the community, don't price gouge, etc and I feel like it would be better to direct attention to them rather than the negatives only.
