Sony Conference Summary #1

So for those not willing to go through the 1600 post EJACULA-TON, here's what happened:

PS3:
- GLOBAL RELEASE NOVEMBER 11th
- 60GB HDD 2.5" with pre-installed Linux OS will be standard (included? we don't know 100%, but it is "required") and is upgradeable
- Dev kit specs fix as of today
- Final PS3 development kits will be sent to developers in June
- 10.000.000 BD-ROMS manufacturing capability per month @ cost around same as 2-layer DVD
- Every PS3 game will be on a Blu Ray Disc, in an attempt to prevent piracy
- Price will not be less than 50.000YEN (~$425USD) [Note that Japanese prices are usually higher. SPECULATION is that it will be $349-$499 USD]
- PS3 will have HDMI support from launch
- Sony plans to produce 1 million PS3s a month; 6 million PS3s for FY2006 (by the end of March 07)
- "basic" online service free, no details yet (and apparently free for games as well unlike XBLS)
- Full backwards compatibility from day 1; hi-res and texture filtering for all titles (akin to what MS does to the few BC titles on 360)
- The online service will be working off of GameSpy technology (co-development with SOE)

PSP:
- videophone in autumn
- GPS (Hot Shots Golf with GPS revealed; October 2006 for Japan)
- Eyetoy
- Flash support with next update
- Mem.Stick boot support in autumn
- first-gen PS1 official emulator
- buy/download games from net
- 199 CORE PACK PSP being released in USA/Europe by end of March (March 22nd for Europe)
- 19,800 yen Ceramic White PSP CORE PACK from 15 April in Japan

No games were on display, this was a conference that concentrated purely on hardware.

Japanese PR Release:

If they can manage to do that in the first two months, I will be very impressed. And if they can, Microsoft had better have some Pimps in strategically placed locations to witness it so they might learn how to get it right next time.

Which isn't surprising and would translate to $400-450 depending on how they go (and the stock market I guess). It could be more, of course.

Basically, yes. Add in Cell tools and nVidia tools = PS3 bedroom coding. And they should be there, I can get both of these things on my PC already, just need the hardware to run code on!

Your resume assume the HDD will be sold seperatly.... only?

This is not true. Nothing is confirmed. They say the PS3 REQUIRES the HDD. It means it needs it for some features at least. + Kutaragi said to devellop games accounting the HDD will be there.

SOUNDS LIKE IT MAY JUST BE INCLUDED.

IGN also stated it would be there right off the box.

Will it be 60GB? Will there be different packs? I guess we'll find out. $400 with a 60GB including Linux would be killer though.

Microsoft started production on Xbox 360 ~September last year, I have no idea when Sony is going to get everything rolling. But basically it seems as if Sony is implying that they will be production ninjas with the PS3, while Microsoft has to date been production ninja dogs. I say good luck to Sony, and Microsoft better take notes.

Well from the sound of it now...

it SOUNDS LIKE...

2 million at worldwide launch
1 million units shipped every month thereafter until March 2007

That's still gonna be SUPER shortage.

The EyeToy idea sounds neat. Is there indication as to whether it will be mainly use for non-game/communication functions? It would be pretty awkward to play a game that requires you to secure your PSP in some position.

Ah, phew. Glad someone made this thread with the real details. All sorts of untrue shit is still being spun in the press conference thread.

I have to question this one, though:

Quote:
Full backwards compatibility, hi-res and texture filtering for all titles (akin to what the Xbox 360 does to Halo)

I do remember hearing full BC, but I DO NOT remember hearing about upscaling (or whatever the technical term is) for all titles. The word a few people who were at the conference used was "legacy" titles will be upscaled.

Are we sure about this fiscal year stuff? It's sorta weird that it's now just being mentioned. I also find it hard to believe they would commit to that type of launch with only 1 to 2 million units. It's the very thing they didn't want to do before. It makes much more sense that they start manufacturing parts in a couple months and then keep producing up until November with a lot more numbers available. It seems like with the PS3, it's much more about the software at this point than the hardware. The hardware is much further along than the 360 was in the same time frame of development.

Well I am still a bit miffed over the PS1 emu.. since you'll need a PS3 to utilise it, as well as purchase blank UMDs.. of which I have not seen at all within Australia. So, even though I might be premature in saying, it sounds kind of anal.
