Phantasy Star Online and Monster Hunter style games Thread: Star Hunter Society

My biggest experience with this genre is Monster hunter Tri on Wii, and I had it really bad for a good couple of months. Couldn't remember the last time a game took hold of me like that. It resulted in literally entire days of playing when I could do so.

Seeing Vindictus in the Opening Post makes me want to fire it up again too. I really wish that game had gotten more "to the point" in it's stages. The boss fights were awesome but all the trash leading up to them got tiresome pretty quickly. Might be interesting to try again with all the new classes.

Vindictus would be a perfect game with a create a character and ported to the Vita.

welp, can't fit in here

I only enjoy MH. Everything else plays like character action game-lite

why play X or Y when they play like a dumbed down DMC or some shit? >_>

You... have never played CC, God Eater or PSO/PSP. Or DMC, beats me.

OT: I get why people like the Miku games, but that voice is awful. The only fictional idol for me is Lumi, I guess.

You should listen to Mitchie M, he manages to make Miku's vocals sound quite natural. Another solution to avoid the mechanical sound is just layering shoegazing guitars on top of the vocals.

Back on topic, earlier in the thread they said the FW demo isn't happening. Linked to dude's Twitter and everything.

Oh, that sucks. I looked up some gameplay and it looks cool. I think I'll place a pre-order on it when I go to town tomorrow.

My main experience with those games are God Eater Burst, Toukiden and Soul Sacrifice (original). When I tried MHFU I couldn't stand it. I'm willing to give it a chance again since the New 3DS has a second analog stick.

From the bunch I've played, my favorite by far is Toukiden. It has most faults new "hunting action" IPs suffer, but I really liked the combat mecanics (especially the Mitama's) and the designs.

I think I played more than 70 hours of it. I still come back from time to time to do some battles. My favorite combination was Dual Daggers + Speed (the Triangle skill was really useful since you are pretty much defenseless in mid air). I liked the Bow and the Long Sword too.

Hopefully there would be a retail version for Kiwami. Love Naginatas, I'd really like to learn how to use it in combat.

Is DW: Strike Force any good? I'm willing to give it a try if it's decent enough. I think I can find the PS3 version for quite cheap at CEX.

And I may actually get Freedom Wars, since it's for 23€ on Amazon.es. I need to get Tales of Hearts R in November though.

It's probably worth mentioning that most of the impressions are that the analog stick isn't really useful. The lock-on system is just a far more effective way to manipulate the camera. If you didn't enjoy the core gameplay then it won't matter, but the camera solution on both 3DS titles is generally better than a second stick.

My first experience would be PSO on Dreamcast....back then the whole thing of playing something like that online on a console was mindblowing. Fun game, playing with other people around the world on TV was a blast. I then played PSO Blue Burst or whatever name it had......and when went on to play Monster Hunter Freedom...and then MHFU that I never finished.

Lots of hours put into those games, but mostly lots of satisfying hours.

Action Hunting (Society) games would do just as fine.... There wasn't any need to lump PSO and MH in thread title but yeah, let's not discuss this..

Also FW got idol

That music seems to totally go against the tone of the game lol... Seems they're shoehorning every bit of japanese pop culture they can to appeal to a greater audience. or... something. I'm kind of grasping at straws.

You should play PS before you accuse something of shoehorning stuff in 😂

That game has Col. Sanders in it.

I am pretty sure it is supposed to be like that. The lyrics of the song and tone of the game don't match the beat and the cute idols. It's intentional. Kind of like the cutesy mascot as well.

Another example is Danganronpa that is violent and depressing but contrasted with the main villain who is a cute bear.

Yep I'm getting freedom wars as well, I played the demo a while back on Japanese PSN.

That's the point, even the mascot is all cute.

just goes how much you know since its what made the game even more popular with fans including the cd for sale at comiket.

the real waste is that they did not include them in the actual game as part of the story such as the "idol group" of the particular panopticon you are in within the story.

the issue isnt what you are trying to piece together but more the devs had various things to make it a winning combination (the game) but went and wasted a lot of potential with bad decusions all around.

Is there any game series that you think could be made to fit the PSO/MH hunting action genre, a la Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce?

I get the contrast. I wish I had a nice word for when media/literature uses supposedly positive or happy things to make the bad side of things seem more stark, but I'm lacking. I guess I just don't think that specific instance is well done, tbh. Maybe they do a better job of making everything mesh in-game, but so far I really can't help but feel it's just a way to get attention, rather than an actual story telling tool (unlike in DanganRonpa, which does it quite well).

I still think Joe is dead on the money when he asks for MH/Pokemon cross overs. Here's my pitch:
Team Rocket (or other evil syndicate) has designed giant robot pokemon and is using them to steal pokemon from other trainers! You and your pokemon must team up with other trainers to put a stop to it. Use the newest in pokemon capturing technology -- repurposed in this dire situation -- to inhibit the giant robots so that your friendly pokemon and team members can deal the finishing blows.
It sounds way better in my head, trust me.

Naw, bundles that don't come with the game can piss off. Not like we'll be seeing it anyway.

thankfully managed to get in my orders for the white vita and psvtv black was tempting but the design is far better on the white model visually.

At the risk of sounding trite? Mega Man. Specifically, something based on the X series.

I've always had an idea that basically flowed with the idea of you being a Maverick Hunter OC and that you, along with friends, went out to hunt a variety of bosses (mix of classic bosses, along with perhaps Command Mission-inspired newbies). The whole thing about being able to be "infected" in MH4/G, along with fighting the main progenitors of that infection, only gave me more fuel for the overall idea.

Good ol Vindictus. Halloween event is up so if you want to try the game out, you get to see it in it's superior map theme. Halloween themed town is best town

Ready for me to hurt your heart?

They could base it around the MegaMan Legends engine.

If it's a grind-fest I don't have a problem with that, I already have invested a bajillion hours into MH since '05. That's pretty much a non-issue.

If it's really hard, yes please.

I want frontier ;_;

its the hardest in the series just due to being based off of dos and balanced exclusively for online play.

I still play Vindictus on and off. I have a 70+ Fiona, 60+ Evie, 60+ Vella, and 60+ (I think), Lynn. Characters with heavy reliance on perfect timing are my favorite thing in games. Which is why getting Evade and lance hopping through Jho's dragon breath so I could poke him in the chin was my favorite thing to do in MHTri.

I haven't logged into Vindictus in a bit because I'm trying to make sure I have one of those "PLEASE WE WANT YOU BACK" packages for when the new character comes out in a few months, though.

New character is katana in one hand, magic caster in the other hand. Seems interesting enough for a spin.

One of the main reasons I want frontier was because it was based of DOS.

I loved DOS. If you import the game and run through pcsx2 you can run DOS with an english patch.

Does anyone play BB on Schtserv? I haven't played in a while but it was a lot of fun when I did. Might have to look into it again. For now, I still have PSO on DC and GC to keep me busy.

I wish I could have gotten into the MH series like I did with PSO. I've got the game on Wii U but I'm simply not a fan. :(

Damn, I put a little under 30 hours into MHFU in a week. How did that happen? I was just feeling like I was done with the series for a year or two after so much of MH3U, now I'm about to preorder MH4U. I want to fight these monsters with fixed movesets, behavior and hitboxes. I should stay away from this thread lest I get addicted to something else.

I still want to give a try to the game since it's been a really long time since I tried a friend's MHFU copy and by then I didn't liked the core mechanics. Things may have change, who knows.

I was really into it on PS3. But tbh, Tales of Hearts is my favorite game in that franchise, so I'd pick that over Strikeforce.

Tales of Hearts is a must. I'm totally getting it. There is no doubt there. And I need to return to Xillia 2 and do some sidestuff too. But that's another story.

The thing is that I can get Strikeforce for 5€. So it's a no brainer. But I want to get this year One Piece game since I've started watching the show recently again (last time I serously considered watching it I was like 15 lol) and Pirate Warriors is a nope since I don't want to be spoiled.

And there is Freedom Wars tempting me with it's low price... But I feel more like buying Unlimited World Red and I don't want a hunting action overload lol.

Imagine if PSP2 had been released in 2006 instead of PSU. The series would be so high right now...

Was Universe that bad? Like "don't waste your time playing this shit" bad. The can be found for really, really cheap for the 360 (servers are closed, so it's normal). It's a shame that the Portable sub-series was pulled out of the PS Store. I would have bought PSP2 in a heartbeat for my Vita.

Man, I'd love to have a fresh Monster Hunter or Phantasy Star game on my Vita. Seems like the odds are against either outside of Japan.

Didn't it only get announced a year ago?

I don't think it's unreasonable it hasn't been released yet, but definitely weird theres been no more hype content like pics or videos.

I cry ery teim
No thx. PSU sucked in single player, but online wasn't too bad and that thread eventually lead to PSP2i which is IMO the greatest title in the genre. The only flaw is that its a PSP game and not Vita, so no second stick camera (not that it matters much since you can map the dpad to that stick)

OT, but devs need to stop using the rear pad on vita. It's the worst. I'm calling you out SAO. You really think that was where you should put the camera zoom controls, you dumbass?

Single player was really bad. Don't remember much from the story but Karen was the only likable character for me.
The multiplayer was fun though and the AoTI expansion made it a lot better.
But since the servers are down then yeah, it isn't really worth it for just the single player.

No matter how good PSO2 may be in graphics, combat, etc. I still prefer PSU's online over it because the single lobby/instance system in PSO2 bores me so much. PSU actually had some interesting places to explore.
Though they did finally add the casino back in PSO2.. it's still not as good as PSU's casino.

basically this. You couldn't pay me to play PSU single player.

AoTI expansion.

Me and a friend had been playing online psu for ages, getting absolutely nowhere in level, and every so often some major high level would go by. We calculated that it would take an ungodly amount of hours to get to that level, a level we didn't think would be possible except for the dedicated elite, but more and more started showing up, it wasn't until after we downloaded this expansion that we realised we were effectively doing nothing. I mean I think we grew more levels in 30 minutes than we did in 3 months.

My history with this genre:

Love Monster Hunter. Just... the best series in my mind.

That being said: I would think that I would like all of these other types of games, right? WRONG!

- Toukiden: having some fun with it but find it to be very much more grindy than MH but battles are very hack and slashy

- Soul Sacrifice: some reason never really clicked with me.

- Phantasy Star: probably the other game series that has "stuck" with me the most... though nothing to really play right now. Last one I played was PSP2 on PSP.

- Ragnarok Odyssey: really excited for this and played a fair amount on launch but never stuck.

So Freedom Wars comes out next week. I really want another hunting game to have its claws into me like MH but don't want it to become another one on this list.

Basically - will wait to hear impressions from fellow Star Hunter Society members on what they think.

Honestly, it boggles my mind that nobody made a sci-fi version of MonHun where you destroy giant machines to upgrade your robot-character.

Also, noticed OP listed some arguable stuff like FF CC and 356/2 Days, but not Kaiju Busters:

Haven't played either, but as far as I know they are MonHun clones where you play as human soldier (like the ones in the Ultraman series) going against classic kaiju.
