IMO, I would think that it's better to sell like the FF games because you know what you're going to get on average...that is, 2mil+ on almost every iteration. Where as with the AC franchise, the long little legs will eventually stop crawling, but you never know when. The advantage is, that sometimes you might strike gold and those legs could run for awhile as we see w/ AC:WW.

However, I don't think AC has established itself well enough to say 2mil+ is garuanteed on every iteration even if some games turn out to be a turd. Obviously, the DS iteration has bolstered the franchise to run with the big boys in Japan, but I guess we'll see how the Rev game does. If it does impressive numbers, then we know AC is up there w/ the FF's, DQ's, & Pokies.

I think the long legs are way more impressive. Explosive launches for the FFs and DQs is old hat, but to sustain a high level of sales for such a long time is rarely heard of. I'd imagine AC will be more like Pokemon in the future with crazy launches, but even bigger legs. Nothing says you can't have both.

Going back to the Naruto argument, I think the whole point will be moot when Naruto 4 DS comes out.

I think it's good to have both. Animal Crossing DS actually had a pretty big launch (325K) . The Pokemon games are the ultimate examples. They always launch lower than DQ and FF, but they always last longer and sell WAY more.

It's scary to imagine if there were two versions of AC like Pokemon.

I'm not sure the Rev version will sell as good as the DS version, not without a huge overhaul. I think it'll probably sell closer to the GCN version. Just cause I think Animal Crossing is most appreciated when portable. It gave me reason to actually use my DS out of my house. I could be wrong and the amazing popularity in japan of the DS version might carry the Rev version farther, but I think the second Animal Crossing for the DS (assuming there is one) will blow the Rev version out of the water.

I'd say that's far from a sure thing, though. As of yet, we've only seen really [i]one[i] game of Animal Crossing, with some permutations as it's gone from region to region and system to system, though surely I think Wild World is a bigger jump than it has been. GameCube AC came closer to launch, and its second release was mostly an excuse to localize the international versions' additions.

Given that they've moved on to Revolution Animal Crossing (which I really hope is something different), I don't know that they'd bother with an all-new DS showing, but instead save it for the next system.

I agree. Animal Crossing Wild World it's really adictive and that's because it's a portable game. I would say, it's design has been waiting for the DS for too long time :)

I bought AC on the CUbe and forgot about it a week before buying it. Now a days, everyday, at train, before going to sleep, before dinning time... ĦI'm always playing AC!

IGN: Do you see Animal Crossing as a franchise that can continue as sequels on one platform, or is it strictly a one game for each system design?

Katsuya Eguchi: I can definitely see additional versions on a single platform, I can see another DS version down the line. You'd have to do things to make it a different experience, but I wouldn't rule out that it isn't a franchise that's restricted to one game per platform.

As long as Pokemon was mentioned, I can't help but wonder why Nintendo never released a "true" Pokemon game for the GC. You would think that they'd go all out to hope to replicate the success from the GB/GBA versons.

2 Versions of AC would be pretty funny, if they ever did that. :lol

QFT.

With all the "milking" they get accused of doing, a true Pokemon game for a home console seemed like a no brainer. Perhaps on Revolution with wi-fi.

I'm pretty sure IGN used their own, 'altered' translation for that interview with Eguchi...

Katsuya Eguchi: What the fuck? What kind of retarded ass question is that? Why am I here again? What site is this anyways...

IGN: Uh, it's IG-

Eguchi: [interrupts] Seriously though, that is one fucked up question; have you seen the damn sales of this sucker in Japan? I remember one conversation with Iwata-san and Miyamoto-san, and we were looking at Media Create numbers together over MSN, and Iwata got so excited he yelled out 'OH MY FUCK I AM THE NEW JESUS!'. It was so awesome. We all laughed.

IGN: Iwata really said that?

Eguchi: What the fuck did I just say? Anyways, I think we'll definitely see another AC on the DS. We've got some great ideas.

I love how people continue to overlook THE most important fact of the DS and it's 3rd party support.

DS games ARE DIRT ASS CHEAP to develop so 3rd parties don't have to sell nearly as many units to recoup development costs and turn a profit. It's easy for people to ignore because we don't have solid numbers but we DO know for a fact that DS games are much cheaper to develop than PSP games and several Japanese developers have been quoted saying so. So please take that into account when you do your 3rd party analisysisisss. Not only are they selling more on the DS but the devs are making more profit to boot.
