A Starfox-like on DS by Nintendo #1

Miyamoto said to a French journalist that a new shoot (like Starfox 2 : Lylat Wars) will be shown during the E3 conference. Miyamoto really wanted to make this on Super Famicom a few years ago but the hardware was too old, so the project was in standby until the arrival of the Nintendo DS.

Star Fox 2 was essentially finished. But why does a "shooter" have to be SF2?

Hopefully this turns out better than the other shooter I had on the DS, Nanostray

I wonder what's the reason behind Nintendo canning Starfox 2? It seems it was pretty far into development.

My good friend wikipedia says:
Quote:
Star Fox 2s release was most likely cancelled because:

* It was too expensive to develop for a system at the end of its prime.
* Nintendo did not want to drive customers' attention away from the yet-to-be-released Nintendo 64.
* Nintendo may have already planned a Nintendo 64 Star Fox-title and did not want to release two separate games.
* The game was to be released at a time too near to when next-generation consoles (at the time) PlayStation and Sega Saturn were coming out.

Although the game's release was cancelled for the SNES, some of the gameplay and ideas were salvaged and transferred to Star Fox 64.

"We borrowed several ideas. All-Range mode, Multi Player mode, and the Star Wolf scenaria [sic] all came from Star Fox 2. I'd say 60% of SF64 comes from the original game, 30% from SF2, and 10% is entirely new." — Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo Power [3] (January 1997)

StarFox 2 would be awesome to have. StarFox 64 was my most played N64 game by far.

Starfox 2 has a pretty good soundtrack... but I still like the original game's OST the best, even over SF64's.

I'll never understand why Nintendo ditched the amazing music from SF1 (and some of 2) for the far more generic shit in SF64. Nothing beats the Corneria theme from SF1. Nothing. Fuck you Nintendo for killing a great thing.

Has potential as long as the in-game dialogue stays just as campy as in Star Fox 64.

That, and the actual SF1 theme you hear during say, the end credits. Man that shit was great.

Man, those quotes remind me how much I enjoyed that game. I wish they'd make another Starfox like that, instead of stuff like Adventures/Assault. I just don't get why companies make decisions like that.

Two options:

#1: Great, unique game that most people like
#2: Decent, more generic game that some people like, but most don't

"Let's go with #2!"

Assault was actually pretty decent aside from the on-foot levels.

which was like 95% of the game

Well, the guy who tells us the news have known it since a month, but he works in a French webzine and he had to wait before revealing the existence of the game.
And Miyamoto hesitated to give the news.

Man, I can hear those lines play out in my head and I haven't touched a SF game in years.

I can still even hear the voice of the scramble sequence; "Degree, degree, Wing N Fighters prepare for launch."

starfox is a franchise that never really got its due credit. the original and its N64 successor were the only real games there were for the series ... it deserved more

Man, I can still hear all these quotes so well. Such memorable characters. :)

"Andross's enemy is my enemy."
"My emperor! I've faaiiiled youuu!"
"How's THIS?!"
"What the heck?"

This is fun.

EDIT: I found a site with .wav files of most/all of the dialogue in the game!

Whatever happened to the GBA homebrew conversion of Starfox? it was the whole first level and was executed with much greatness if I remember correctly.

I think it'd work great on the DS personally. The touch screen controls fit the mold of controlling the arwing, especially if they stick with the structure Namco established (on-foot and on rails).
