Media Create Sales: Week 22, 2015 (May 25 - May 31)

To be fair, if it has any knock-on effect on hardware sales, I'd expect it to be mostly via word-of-mouth over time. Not that I am expecting much anyway.

Oh . Definitely. Legs could still improve the situation. If WiiU doesn't drop too hard during following weeks then Splatoon had sizable effect on hardware sales and brought new people to the platform. Like you said I kinda doubt that too lol.

PSV : Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition [PlayStation Store] {DL} ( Mojang ) { 2014-10-29 } - - / 268,549
PSV : Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition ( Mojang ) { 2015-03-19 } - 36,593 / 176,417
Total: 444,966

Minecraft's success in Japan on Vita is surprising for a multitude of reasons.

Minecraft will sell over a million and will be Vitas first and only million seller in Japan. My prediction that has some chances to happen =P

The one thing that pops into my mind when seeing those numbers is that this might open the doors for Nintendo to green light a lot more quirky new ideas. :)

Btw, since it seems like Terraria is incoming at least to Wii U (and I think 3DS), how do folks think that would fare on the 3DS? The Vita version fell short of 100K, but I think Minecraft was an option digitally during that time. Thoughts?

The Madoka game is an actual literal slot machine app. Which costs money to buy then has IAP to actually buy pulls. All the slots/pachinko apps actually work like this, anybody know why?

Fun times at Konami PR:

Akira Sakuma, creator of Hudson's Momotaro Railway series, claims the 27 year old franchise is dead due to a lack of communication with Konami. Konami issued a press release today stating their intent to continue the series.

To recap:

Key personnel behind the Love Plus and Tokimeki Memorial series ditch Konami. The publisher claims they'll continue work on those properties.

Key personnel behind the Metal Gear Solid series are reportedly set to ditch Konami. The publisher claims they'll continue to work on that property.

Silent Hills gets cancelled. The publisher claims they'll continue to work on that property.

That's just in 2015.

A friend brought up too that some in-house musicians also left the company. They're probably too unknown to be named in PR however, but Hideyuki Ono, Aiko Oi and Yasunori Nishiki, to name a few but those worked worked on Konami's music games like Beatmania, and Pop'n series.

Fantastic numbers for Splatoon, amazing when you think it's new IP in a not-so-beloved genre in japan: leaks were legit.

I'm happy for Spike C considering all the effort they've put into giving TW3 a day1 debut with full dub localization using top notch voice talent, well deserved and I hope the game will show some legs and ultimately climb to 150k/200kLTD with the help of a Best! release.

Also hey, Vita is now the new Gamecube while 3DS is the new PSP :p

PSP is around 21 million lifetime right? I think the 3DS could reach that by the end of the year if it has a strong holiday. More than likely it will be closer to 20 million though, unless some Q4 megatons are announced at E3 for Japan

Only noticed now that Mario Kart surpassed 1 million on Media Create! Well deserved, to be honest. The game is a blast!

I wonder how it did digitally. Do we have any numbers?

Oh. Is the Famitsu sales chart out too?

Anyway. That's an 8K difference. Pretty big.
I'm sorry for asking this but do Media Create and Famitsu track digital sales too?

The famitsu chart is always out (famitsu.com/biz/ranking, refresh the page if you get a "Denied" error).

Famitsu tracks download card sales. Media Create doesn't. Famitsu also generally includes bundle sales whereas Media Create doesn't except in certain cases (Mario Kart 8 is counted probably b/c while it's "bundled" there's no price difference b/w buying the bundle or buying the system & game separately).

Yeah, I don't think there's a chance for 3DS to surpass PSP before next year, my comment was in jest but they're actually pretty close to GC and PSP numbers, I doubt Vita will get that much higher than GC when all is said and done before Famitsu/MC stop tracking it.

8k is not that big, besides Famitsu also tracked WiiU hw lower than MC.

Famitsu tracks digital sales too and releases a monthly chart.
They've been estimating digital sales since September 2013 and have been releasing a monthly update since
December 2013.

MC doesn't track digital sales nor download cards.

Vita will pass lifetime sales of GC this summer... GC only sold around 4.05 million.

If it were multiplatform and marketed correctly like the Witcher 3 was, and released at the right time of year I think it could do incredibly. But its platform, and the nature of that platform's audience, are likely going to be an almost insurmountable problem. Which is to some extent what happens when Nintendo funds non-Nintendo-esque games for its platform,

XBX is a very unique game anyway. There are no such games on other platforms and Nintendo consoles has always been a good platform for niche games. The main JRPG platform this gen is the 3DS, a Nintendo system.

When it comes to Nintendo understanding what market they're trying to appeal to is their biggest problem, and it goes beyond games. No idea what they're trying to accomplish when they release random games like Bayonetta 2 or Xenoblade X when the platform it-self isn't off the ground, but they must know the audience isn't on their platform, right?

I think Bayonetta 2 sold as good as the first one on PS3 or XBox360. So it seems the market for such games is as big as on other platforms.

I'm rather confused as to what precisely Konami's goal is in the dedicated video game market now. After PES16, what do they do? They're losing talent, but they state that their properties will be used in the future. Really mobile only? I'm guessing that they might stick it out with PES, but I really don't know what to expect for the rest.

I think Bayonetta 2 sold as good as the first one on PS3 or XBox360. So it seems the market for such games is as big as on other platforms.

In Japan or WW? Because the first Bayonetta sold 6 times more in Japan than the sequel, so I'm not sure what you mean. I'd say the first probably sold way more worldwide than the second, too.

The game just doesnt look appealing...

That and mixed reviews and impressions, demo too slow, etc. it would had done better if pushed as an Eshop release for 3DS and Wii U imo.
Putting it on wii u wouldn't have magically improved character models or textures. It would have just increased cost.

Not to mention the speed up patch was in the demo by the time europe and Japan got the game.

This is coming from someone who loves the game.

Great start for Splatoon, now let's see how far it can go.

And once again Minecraft continues to impress with it's damn fine legs. I didn't expect it to stay above 10k long after golden week but not only has it stayed above it's actually increasing. Makes you wonder how the Vita would be doing without it.

Pro Baseball Spirits 2015 is the only PS3 title... already happened before ??
October 2014 the last time a XBO game had a 3k opening week (Psycho-Pass best result for 2015 probably ? :D )

I believe he's probably thinking to the first NPD, which wasn't good but it was around on par with Bayo1's launch, IIRC. That said, WWLTD for Bayo1 is bloated from bargain bin clearance and it achieved over a million that way.

Bayo2 is probably still scrapping the lower rungs of the hundreds of thousands, but doing so at 45-60$ MSRP. I'd wonder if Nintendo hasn't for the most part recouped any losses on it as they picked it up as a packaged (bad) deal and it was half-complete. Man... they got screwed in the SEGA deal, lol.

no it wasn't

You might have gotten that confused with it actually being close to one SKU of the game...but even this does not translate to the rest of the world.

Well the preorders for the spinoff are pushed heavily, so people are most likely turning to that instead of the "old" games.

In Japan reports are floating about this IP decaying rather quickly. I personally think YW3 would still sell but not as much as YW2.
And even if YW's popularity decreases Hino should be expecting this anyway.

Psycho pass was pretty much sent out to die huh...
To be honest it did well all things considered (personally biggest surprise of last week).

The Mario Kart series is a different beast. We know nothing about Splatoon's potential legs quite yet.

We do know it's getting long term support at least in 2015 with free DLC updates. So, it's going to get continued support. That's usually a good sign for long term sales for these sort of games. Especially with that "free" tag.

That's a damn impressive first week. It should crack 500k. If it goes higher, it's all gravy. Time to see how well it does in NA and Europe.

Im glad to see splatoon doing well, it's a really fun looking game.

Psycho pass was pretty much sent out to die huh...

Not really. FF13 sold over a million copies in America in the first month. FF14 currently has over 4 million subscribers worldwide (many of whom aren't in Japan). Yeah, the spin-offs didn't sell as well, but the spin-offs never sell as well.

Not even fucking close.

I really thought the game would have better legs than ORAS, and this wasn't the case. Obviously Youkai Watch will sell insane amounts of games, but surely not as last games.

Xbox One games have some pretty decent attach rates in Japan.

Something that I really wanted to know is what are the best selling Xbox One games so far in Japan?

Splatoon did well, but not better than Freedom Wars. It will probably sell better in the long run, though.

I have to say I think the biggest success this week is Psycho Pass on the XB1, considering the install base. It looks like almost 1 in 10 XB1 owners bought it, though the one review of the LE on Amazon JP says (I'm paraphrasing here) "I don't have an Xbox One, so I can't play the game. I bought this for the special bluray included in the LE, and I like it." lol. I wonder how many others did the same thing.

Famitsu's rule is more clear, they always includes bundles.

If anything, they'll scale it back. They got a lot of flack on that one and the game itself was rather... meh.

I'd see them putting more focus and robust design into Bowser Mode, keep a simple Car Mode, and add back in a Classic Mode. Amiibos can be (and should be, really) used to just unlock random fluff like car skins, board skins (same board, just theme it based on the amiibo franchise).

Amiibo are put to best use when they give the devs an excuse to basically Smashify anything and tie in external series. Look at Wooly World, a breadth of in-game unlocks AND neat amiibo functionality to make a Samus Yoshi!

I can't say I'm surprised or even disappointed, at this point. Hudson (now nd Cube) and Nintendo really went out of their way to give people Mario Party fatigue and playing with the formula as much as they have didn't exactly give anyone a reason to be excited. To the people who complain about annualized franchise releases? Here is your prime example of exactly what happens.

I'm pretty sure it's done now.
