Store Impressions Time!

DQVI: Selling extremely well. Should be quite bigger than DQIV, V and Joker.

DS hardware: Definitely should go up next week.

Darkside Chronicles: sold out at one shop (Yodobashi) AGAIN.

I have to commend Square Enix for increasing HW sales these last two months. In spite of all the new properties this gen, SE's top franchises are as reliable as ever.

If Dragon Quest VI exceeds Joker's LTD this fiscal year, it would then have sold around 75% of what FF XIII did so far.

Square Enix has sold about 8.3 Million DQ games on the DS alone this generation, and the number may very well be beyond 9 Million now that Dragon Quest VI is out.

LTDs might be a bit outdated (especially DQIX), but for quick reference:

Dragon Quest IX: 4,134,822
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker: 1,467,179
Dragon Quest IV: 1,214,610
Dragon Quest V: 1,190,404
Slime Morimori Dragon Quest 2: 293,970

The Pokemon series is at about 16,441,786 games sold on the DS. Mario is at just under 15 Million (when including tie-ins like Olympic Games and Itadaki Street).

If it's coming out in April, the date will have to be announced by the end of Feb.

Seems feasible given how Nintendo does things. I'm stil thinking the Nintendo Dream title is Mario Party for April, which would make a lot of sense.

This is looking to be the year with the best first party lineup on wii (Xenoblade, The Last Story, Metroid Other M, Zelda and Super Mario Galaxy 2) but will probably be the worst year sales-wise for Nintendo.

Pretty sad.

I don't know if we can say that for sure..I mean its in all likelihood going to have a much better Q1 than 2009 sales wise.

Its nice to see Nintendo step up. These games remind me of the golden days of PS2. So many awesome RPG's.

Soo..going back to discussions about Nintendo we have had in the past, a question, given the news from last night-

Are we finally seeing evidence that Nintendo is taking steps to cultivate and develop more of a "core" audience by utilizing internal and external resources toward that goal? Or is the 2010 lineup just a happy coincidence?

Now, I think at this point I think its too late to have any real impact on 3rd party development/sales, so that's not the issue.

They've always "taken steps" though. The only question is how well it works. It's not that Nintendo has not been publishing core games, it's not that they haven't been partnering with developers to make core games. It's just that so far their idea of short marketing campaigns on titles to let them live or die by their own quality and/or word of mouth is not exactly working out. We won't know if their current strategy is going to be any different or any more successful.

I'm a bit groggy this morning, so I could absolutely be mistaken, but in the Wii's lifetime I don't remember this much of a effort towards core genres with 3rd party teams (or in Xenoblades case, formerly 3rd party teams). Certainly internally Nintendo has done it with established IP's, but I honestly don't remember many examples like we have this year (Reginleiv, Xenoblade, Last Story, Metroid).

In case of their awesome advertising and marketing strategy, yeah that is awful and probably won't change that much.

Not on the Wii sure, but I was referring to the same thing Nintendo did (with many of the SAME developers might I add) on the DS. Remember how they had ASH, Soma Bringer, Glory of Heracles, etc all lined up. They had that Robot MG game with Sandlot too. Ultimately very few titles really had much real success, and I can't say it achieved the goal Nintendo really wanted at all.

If anything, I would say selling core games on the DS is a much easier task than it is on the Wii right now, so I really have to question if this will ultimately mean anything other than a year where duckroll makes tons of Nintendo related threads with very little replies. :(

I guess their marketing dept plays the role of a self-fulfilling prophecy: they won't allocate more pre release marketing budget to a game they don't even expect high sales of. The only way out for a game is to have "surprising" legs at which point the post release marketing efforts can kick in. I think Rhythm Tengoku Gold and Tomodachi Collection sales are the kind of successes Nintendo likes to see from hardcore games as well, so the keep churning them out until they get some which sticks. Works great with more casual games, fails miserably with hardcore games so far.

Xenoblade medded the order. If Nintendo wants to make it the flagship title for Golden Week, this moves Mario at Q3/Q4.

Next Nintendo retailer meeting and the new title announcement from Dream Nintendo (if it wasn't Xenoblade) will give us a very good estimate of the launch windows for the upcoming titles.

Wahey, I didn't think it did that bad. How much did the DC version pull?
It's worth noting that its release date was December 26, 2002, so that's just the first week of sales. Not that it could've picked up much more if another number never popped up. JGC has the DC version with 74,351 following a 42,735 first week.

I think J-gamers get turned off every time they see a Spider-Man game without giant robots.

September 2006: Nintendo releases a Sandlot action game. It bombs.
October 2007: Nintendo releases a Mistwalker RPG. It bombs.
January 2008: Nintendo releases a MonolithSoft RPG. it bombs.

February 2010: Nintendo releases a Sandlot action action. ???
Spring 2010: Nintendo releases a MonolithSoft RPG. ???
2010: Nintendo releases a Mistwalker RPG. ???

will history repeat itself

The GC version of Skies almost evened out the DC game with the US release. The game did 300k+ on the two systems in the two territories combined. With Europe, it could be as high as 500k. VC did slightly better (hence the sequel).

Maybe the userbase has widened out a bit to allow success in 2010. In 2006-2008, I think "who" were buying the Wii and who were buying other consoles was a bit more constricted. I mean, if FFXIII had been released(amazingly yes) in 2007 or 2008 would it have even topped 1 million on the PS3? All 3 consoles have grown a bit since then.

Apparently, there was an oversaturation of rpgs on the DS early on too

Some other details:

- Zelda will be at E3 this year. 100% triple confirmed.
- SMG2 will be out this year, no season mentioned.
- Golden Sun DS is also being targeted for this year.

This is VERY interesting. I hope the soundtrack will be as good as the previous games.

All three of those 2006-2008 games were DS, I was just teasing duckroll ;)

No, Nintendo just sends everything that isn't a AAA+++ guaranteed huge hit out to die with no marketing or support of any kind.

So WII Top-10-Third-Party LTD after 3 years is almost only higher than GCN's because of Monster Hunter

I'm sure I'll regret this, but let's see what happens - they seem to be pushing Reginleiv a little with a bit more promo in Famitsu and the instore demo scheme.

They do seem to have identified the lack of core titles as a major problem for the platform and their securing Monster Hunter Tri for last summer, the ToG and SM3 CCPro/hardware bundles at the end of the year and the scheduling of Reginleiv, Last Story, Xenoblade, Other M would suggest they want to make a push for a different audience.

I would be surprised if they went to this kind of effort and then failed to support it with strong promotional programs, but I suppose you never can tell with Nintendo!

To the resident sales-agers here: Is it really a good idea to send out Xenoblade as Nintendo's Golden Week title for the Wii?

I mean, sure, it's better than the alternative - no new title at all - but this sure seems like a niche title to me.

Other than that, I sure hope they aren't going to position SMG2 as their big holiday title this year. Although I'm personally looking forward to it, that's just not a good idea. Maybe it'll be a fall title?

What I really want to see soon: KIRBY WII. My god, Nintendo, either release the damn game or throw it in the trash. Putting it on your release list every year is going to kill me :lol

edit: fixed a typo :)

So if the game Neo posted about is a regular Pokemon (which I think that's what the article was getting at), this will be the most consecutive years with a Pokemon game release in Japan. It will also be the most on the same platform to an extent, since if my memories serves me, the Game Boy Color games ran on the Game Boy.

1996: Pokemon Red/Green (GB)
1997:
1998: Pokemon Yellow (GB)
1999: Pokemon Gold/Silver (GBC)
2000: Pokemon Crystal (GBC)
2001:
2002: Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire (GBA)
2003:
2004: Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen (GBA) + Pokemon Emerald (GBA)
2005:
2006: Pokemon Diamond/Pearl (NDS)
2007:
2008: Pokemon Platinum (NDS)
2009: Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver (NDS)
2010: Pokemon 2010 [Seemingly Gen 5] (NDS)

Out of curiosity, do people think this will have a positive or negative effect on sales, or none at all?

fixed
some games had their american release dates instead of their japanese dates.
gen 5 looks about right on time considering the gap between gen 3 and 4 was almost 4 years and DP will be 4 years old in september.

By calling it Xenoblade rather than Monado, I think it's pretty obvious they trying to get some Xenosage/gears fans to make the game sell better. If they can actually convince part of the Xeno fanbase to jump in, it could actually sell some consoles for that week.

xenogears - 900k
xenosaga episode 1 - 450k
xenosaga episode 2 - 250k
xenosaga episode 3 - 180k

obviously not a promising trend in sales, but it's not like monolithsoft as a team can't make a game that would theoretically get pretty huge... and it's not like nintendo can't sell a game if they actually put some effort into it.

Well, he did say "top 10 third party". =P Using the data you posted:

GC: 3,115,366
WII: 3,887,572 (+772,206)

We know PS3 has passed GC in total hardware units, but how much is there left for software according to your database, Chris?

Thanks.

So re: the new Wii RPG's, I do think they are going to get a better push than the usual externally developed sent to die software..Iwata actually mentioned both titles to investors yesterday and described them as "full scale RPG's"..I dunno..I don't remember Reginleiv or Takt of Magic ever appearing in a IR report.

I don't think I remember which was the last high (or even low) profile RPG that was published from Nintendo for a home console in Japan. These two with Metroid will be pushed hard from Nintendo this year.

Well, both developers have made games that used to sell millions of copies.

Admittedly, it's been a very, very long time since then, but there is at least some history to help convince Nintendo these games have a higher sales potential than a fantasy EDF or a S&P sequel.

Paper Mario games and before them maybe Ogre Battle 64 and Fuurai no Siren 2.
I'm not sure how well those two games can sell in Japan.
If you don't do something different or don't have a strong IP seems that mediocre sales are the probable outcome.

It's worth pointing out that even for the same time period as PS3 has been out, GCN is still a bit ahead--though not nearly as much as it was a couple months ago, thanks to XIII.

I never saw Paper Mario as an 100% RPG, at least not the same way I see Super Mario RPG, but maybe this is only my opinion.

This is from new Pokemon thread but it's worth reposting for the sales target they have set.

-New game in the Pokemon Series releasing this year.
-In order to surpass the Pokemon games so far, they're aiming at innovative software that they're "eagerly developing".
-Di/Pe sales
-Urgent video will be shown on Pokemon Sunday on Feb 7th. He says to take a look, as you could get some information.

I'd say they're just as much RPGs as Super Mario RPG or any other RPG. I mean, they have turn based battles, leveling up, customization, and everything else you expect from one.

The last one didn't have turn-based battles though.

I know you're talking about home console RPGs, but I always thought that Nintendo were going to push the Golden Sun series as their own RPG brand.

I'm not sure if a GC or Wii game was ever planned or why the series disappeared for so long.

Looking at the release dates for the top selling GC titles (which I'll arbitrarily choose as 500k+) 9 out of 10 were released in 2001, 2002 or 2003. When you look at the PS3 titles in that category, 3 out of 4 were released in 2009 (which would be 2004 in GC years) and one in 2008. That could explain the lead the GC has.

I'm not even sure PS3 will have that many titles selling over 500k (while the winners count million sellers, the losers have to make do with half-million sellers).

On another matter:

This graph says 55 milllion units of software were sold in 2009, but adding the weekly sales we have 66 million. So...???

Either way, here are the estimates based on pixels for 2009:

NDS - 24.4 million
WII - 11.7 million
PSP - 8.1 million
PS3 - 7.2 million
PS2 - 2.3 million
360 - 1.4 million

(Famitsu is owing us that info...)
