Media Create Sales: Week 13, 2017 (Mar 27 - Apr 02)

I think the 3rd party are doing fine.
Bomberman chugging along
Puyo puyo as well
DQH with the high price should make a good profit
Now Disgea 5 and I Am Setsuna :(

Too bad Disgaea 5 was the one that would predict the state of future third-party on the system. It's doomed now !

Pretty impressive that even without MHXX, 3DS Software would still be flat/slightly down YoY. I mean, the line-up has been anything but stellar this Q1.

Software would be 25% down without Monster Hunter. Despite Nintendo having abandoned it, 3DS doesn't want to die. One big game is enough to offset the lack of other releases so far but in the end it will see a ~50% drop YTD. Hardware might hold better though.

Mario Sports Superstars opened at just #5 on the 3DS eShop chart so don't expect digital sales to be anything of note. Let's just hope the game has Golden Week legs...

Since we were discussing Squeenix support yesterday, what with that Nikkei interview... Takashi Tokita teasing... something.

https://twitter.com/Takashi_Tokita/status/850225809889517569
A Switch... and the beginning of a very secret mission.
If that's not teasing, what is it...

Too bad Disgaea 5 was the one that would predict the state of future third-party on the system. It's doomed now !
Still, when you consider how low were the sales on PS4 first week, it really doesn't look that bad on the Switch.
It was around 20K on the PS4 and 3 to 4K on the Switch. Not that far away.

Nintendo has been steady with Switch shipments so far. There was rise only with Splatoon. This is the first week of new FY and it doesn't look they will change the pattern until Golden Week.

1 - 350.000
2 - 50.000
3 - 50.000
4 - 75.000
5 - 50.000
6 - ?

It's all dependant on whether they can actually reach higher shipment numbers at all, of course, but do you think they would up the shipments towards Golden Week because of MK8D launching? Seems like a perfect moment to ship more and get certain returns out of it, both in Japan and worldwide.

If Nintendo keeps the 50k trend until Golden Week they will be in position for at least one week with 100k supply alongside Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launch.

If there is still shortage after these shipments and at the slow period of May YTD count top 4m.

I did some rough math on my phone for what the Switch has to do the rest of the way.

4M YTD: ~88.2k/week
4M YTD w/ 1.2M in 5 weeks in December: ~65.8k/week

Definitely doable with enough supply. It has to hold a decent baseline to achieve it though. This is based off Media Create weeks.

Looks a little on the ambitious side but could see it not a million miles from there

3DS did 4m with awful post launch sales.

4M for Switch shouldn't be too hard with enough supply.

3ds had a bigger launch and then was much cheaper post panic mode price cut than switch is, its definitely possible but depends how the baseline holds up between the big releases

Like I said before if Switch after Golden Week is still sold out we don't have to wait for anything else, 4m YTD are almost given. If demand goes down it will depend on big releases and what hardware they will push.

We are talking about 4m for Switch this year now? In Jan, there were people who didn't think it will outsell PS4 this year.

So what happens if after Golden Week and Mario Kart 8 sales start to slow down? That it starts to sell 15-25k a week instead of 50k or more? Will Nintendo do a price drop or ride it out till Splatoon 2 comes out?

Ride it out. If the cost breakdown is anything to go by, Nintendo doesn't have room to drop price currently.

They will have an E3 to prove their future worth, and a few slower weeks in the 20k range before Splatoon 2 would be fine (though I think unlikely to happen at this point).

I do believe they will have more than 100k for MK8D week. If they could get 78k just for Splatoon 2 Global Testfire week, I'm sure they'll be able to ship more for the first major release since launch. Though they may have planned to spread the shipments a bit, wouldn't do to have no stock at all during GW because everything sold out during MK8D launch week-end.

No Final Fantasy IV PSP?

No love for Final Fantasy IV : The after years, Wiiware ?

I was just being facetious here. If there really is a FFIV something on Switch, it'd be port of the PSP collection (but I don't think that's what he's working on)

Does that wording mean he's just starting?

pft

Looks like it.

A YTD less than 3m would be a disaster for Switch. That scenario is gone. Ourselling Wii U LTD this year would be a good start, topping 4m would be a great start.

Well 100K restock for MK8D is a bit too pessimistic for me, it's a major game that comes during a period where demand seems to be high with just Zelda being a game of a similar caliber. Preorders for MK8D are doing better than MK7 and MK8, it's Golden Week and supply for the Switch prior to the release is unlikely to be meeting demand.

I'm expecting a bigger launch than MK7 the question is about how much are Nintendo going to supply. I'm thinking that 150-250K is a possibility while 100k might not meet the demand. It's up to Nintendo and retailers to decide.

I've heard a lot of reports over the Joy-Con Wheels selling out (although Amazon today re-opened pre-orders) so it points more towards Mario Kart 8 Deluxe being a success.

Haha, that's quite a unique piece of evidence! Good news, hope it helps the Switch sell many hardware units.

In one year the Switch will have:

Zelda
Mario Kart
Splatoon 2 (this will be huge)
3D Mario
Pokemon stars (rumour)
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Arms
Fire Emblem Warriors
Ubisoft Rabbids Mario game (rumour)

This is a much better lineup compared to the 3DS 1st year.

You missed some stuff ;)

I see, but I think having a big and varied range of games like the ones I listed will help contribute towards more sales too.

Lol, the Switch optimism is off the charts here. I think it'll do well, but Nintendo would be crazy to release Smash and Pokemon this year. They'd be basically out of the big sellers apart from Animal Crossing for the future...

Also Chris, why are you convinced that the Switch will easily sell 3M this year? Isn't it still rather early? Sales could plummet between now and Golden Week or in the summer months still right? (We're still assuming that Nintendo will not delay ANY of their projects announced, Splatoon 2 especially).

Which means they'll try some more new stuff and sequels to games like Zelda and Mario.

Wait what? those will be ports, Nintendo will release the new entries by 2019-20. Also do you honestly believe Nintendo won't develop any new games for the next 2 years?

Animal Crossing isn't the only system seller. They can get a brand new Monster Hunter also. They combined their teams to make more games. I wouldn't be surprised to see another 3D Mario is a few years.

It certainly has reversed since a few weeks ago.
I'm taking it one step at a time. For '17, It's all about if MK8D can hold until Splatoon, and if ARMs will help in that effort.

Then of course of the rumors of Pokemon are true.

Ride it out, the month of June is a terrible month where there are no holidays, you work a lot, and you get rained on whenever you leave a building. If the numbers drop in June, it is due to how busy everyone is, not their lack of interest in the Switch. However for the record, I don't think it will drop much in June.

3M YTD: 62.4k/week

All it takes to reach that would be a few big weeks around Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, Dragon Quest XI, and Mario Odyssey, any sort of small holiday bump, and a base of 30k/week in between. This doesn't account for any future titles that could be plopped down in the second half of the year to bolster the line up.
